The BA Prospect Handbook landed yesterday. BA's comments were not very flattering. If it weren't for Felix Pie, there wouldn't be too much to get excited about. They do like a lot of the young pitchers and believe it or not, Luis Montanez made the list at number 30. I'm not at home right now. If there is not another posting when I get back from work, I'll post more details.

Do a lot of people think Montanez lost "value" when he moved from SS to the OF?

In my mind that question is a no brainer. No. Of course he probably gained value due to increased production.

He only had very minimal value in the first place, so I don't think it matters all that much

I think he absolutely lost value, since outfielders that put up those numbers are much much more common than those who do so at SS. Of course, if the argument is that he wouldn't have improved to those numbers at SS, I can see it being a net zero(not to imply that he shouldn't have changed positions).

Dead on, in my opinion Tiger, Its is amazing how many misses we have had over the years when drafting position players . No wonder Hendry emphazies Pitching aquisitions. God Bless and well put Tiger

Wow, Montanez at 30? This system has fallen apart. Montanez has no value, yet he's cracking lists. His only decent production came as a 22 year old in freaking Boise, and a 23 year old in low A ball. He sucked whenever he played at his age level, and when he hit AA this year.

Why is this a surprise? Harvey and Dopirak have been disappointing, Hagerty and Blasko and Marshall and Petrick and Guzman have been hurt, Pinto and Sisco and Nolasco and Dubois and Jones and Beltran and Harris are gone, what's left to get excited about?

Pie, Hill, Pawelek, and in Chicago, Murton and Cedeno. Maybe Veal and Gallagher and Marmol. Maybe Patterson. Them's pretty slim pickings.

Is there any chance the now Montanez has been able to hit better that he may start to work on some SS and 2B so he cold be groomed for a utility role?

It would seem that if he has some confidence at the plate, putting some emphasis on fielding won't hurt him.

I ordered the book from BA's web-site. By the way, 11 of the top 30 players were drafted in the last two years. If these guys do well in 2006, we may be a lot more excited about our system next year.

Montanez ain't going anywhere soon. He'll never make the majors, JIMO. If he proves me wrong, then great. I'm so glad we hired Wilken. He's track record of drafting very good position players is excellent. We've done well over the years with pitchers, but not many position players. Marmol could be a big surprise in the organization.
