Thank you M&P. You hit the nail on the head.

Hendry is giving Jones $5,000,000 a year to play baseball, not so that he can play part time. Barring injury he will start the season in the outfield. He is an everyday player, bottomline.

He may be able to play everyday, but it would benefit the club to platoon him. I think it has about a 1% chance of happening, but to say that Jones shouldn't be platooned is ridiculous.

If the Reds would take a 27 year-old Westbrook, who posted ERA+ of 91 in 2005, 134 in 2004, and 98 in 2003, why couldn't we build a deal around a 23-year-old Jerome Williams who posted ERA+ of 100 in 2005, 105 in 2004, and 130 in 2003?

I know that Westbrook's peripherals look better than Williams, but Williams is older and has put up some better seasons, including a better performance in the most recent season.

Why not offer Williams and Wellemeyer for Kearns? Murton, Kearns, and Jones could split time in the outfield.

I'm not the biggest fan of Kearns (I think it is well known that I'd prefer Dunn... :D ), but Kearns is only 25 and should have a few good years ahead of him.

Because Williams is better than Kearns?

I value him more, especially for our situation.

Not saying I wouldn't be open to Kearns, just that I wouldn't trade Williams for him. He is 23 and has proven to be better than average starting pitcher for next to nothing $$$$ wise.

Perhaps I am missing the reason we need to go out and acquire an Austin Kearns. Jacque Jones is under contract to play for the club this season. It doesn't make sense to trade a, lets say, Jerome Williams and platoon Kearns and Jones and Murton. Jones is a left handed bat that can hit from the 5-7 spots in this teams lineup. This move wouldn't make sense to me.

Jones should never be allowed near a LHP. Kearns would make an excellent platoon player who has very good upside.

True, but at the cost we paid for Jones, and the likely cost to aquire Kearns, is it worth it? You could have signed Eric Byrnes for a $1m deal if you wanted to platoon Jones.

I think Kearns has more upside than Byrnes. Kearns has had some struggles in the majors, but he has also had stretches where he has been very good. He's still young enough to realize that as he hasn't entered his prime years just yet.

If the cost was Wellemeyer and Williams, I'd probably do the deal for Kearns.

Williams is worth more than Kearns on his own. Kearns should have approx the same value as Patterson...maybe a little higher. He's not had success outside his one BABIP driven good year. Why overpay for that?

Jones OPS by month:

April: 1.074

May: .586

June: .714

July: .953

August: .586

September: .686

I don't think Hunter's injury was a particular turning point, it just coincided with the end of the second of Jones' two great months, and before the final 2 of his 4 abhorrent months.

And those splits hold true through Kearns' career ... meaning he has the bizarre contrast of getting on base significantly more again LHP, but slugging almost 80 points less.

Not really sure what to make of it.

the obvious difference being that dunn is still good against lefties. jones is worthless against lefties. Trading for Kearns would be asinine but platooning jones makes a lot of sense. I would give up a b prospect for kearns, nothing more. I would rather trade williams for westbrook than kearns.

I'm not sure that is really saying much. That said, Kearns has a world of talent...just not sure he has a body that will stand up for a whole year so he can effectively show that talent for 500-600 ABs.

This past year looks like a bit of an aberration. His IsoP and IsoD are very similar, so it's apparently a function of BABIP.

Hendry and Hughes have had a long standing desire for Kearns (at least that's what has been rumored) and according to Ken Rosenthal, he may now be available. No wonder O'Brien was fired, Kearns for Westbrook would have been a nice deal for the Reds--they need pitching. I would think the Reds would have some interest in Williams due to his age and current cost, but he may not be the top line pitcher they're looking for.

I also don't know where Kearns would play at this time with the Cubs, but if they really want him, as bad as it has been rumored, then I would assume they'll worry about that later.

<

The Royals, Cardinals, Cubs and Nationals are among the teams that have had a long-standing interest in Kearns. The Indians recently offered right-hander Jake Westbrook for Kearns, but former GM Dan O'Brien said no to the deal. Those talks could be revisited now that O'Brien is gone.

The Indians wanted Kearns to fill the outfield void that could be created by their trade of Coco Crisp to the Red Sox. But the Reds evidently weren't sold on Westbrook, who was 15-15 with a 4.49 ERA last season after going 14-9 with a 3.38 ERA in 2004.

Under O'Brien, who was fired Monday, the Reds consistently sought a potential top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher for Kearns, a price that other clubs viewed as too steep.

The Royals, for example, were not willing to part with right-handed starter Zack Grienke for Kearns, but they probably would be willing to trade a reliever such as right-hander Mike MacDougal or left-hander Jeremy Affeldt.

If the Reds trade Kearns, they could make Ryan Freel an outfield regular or acquire a first baseman and move Adam Dunn back to left field. Scott Hatteberg, Matthew LeCroy and Russell Branyan are among the free-agent options at first.>>
