It's not expected to be major as it is just a procedure to clean-up scar tissue. He's likely to be out 4-6 weeks, which means he could miss the the start of spring training.

These recent knee troubles only increase the need of him having to get in better shape to remain in LF and not shift to 1B prematurely b/c of his weight.

Berkman's neither the most athletic individual nor the most disciplined. He's pretty much done in the OF. I can just see Bagwell making a miraculous turnaround pushing Berkman to left and Wilson to center. Yikes. Talk about giving the pitchers confidence.

Arthroscopic is no big deal nowadays. Depends what they find in there as to how long he'll be out, but it won't be more than 6 weeks. Ben Roethlisberger had arthroscopic surgery in the middle fo the season this year and missed 2 games, IIRC.

Had he been able to keep himself in better shape, the odds of him sticking in LF would be much higher than his current state.

Nah, it wouldn't be classless enough to do it now. Wait until he has achieved icon status in the city, and then do it.
