What's annoying to me is that instead of Neifi, Mabry and Grissom for the bench, the Cubs could have/should have Mark Sweeney, Richard Hidalgo and Russ Branyan. Yet more bad decisions on role players from the addled mind of Jim Hendry.

Who would be the backup shortstop?

Not a fair comparison.

I mean, why don't you also say that the Cubs should have Kevin Millar on the bench rather than Henry Blanco?

Every GM in major league baseball passed on Branyan in waivers. So every GM in major league baseball lacks "a talent for baseball knowledge"? Not one GM has ascended to their position because they have an uncommon talent for it? If I read your post correctly, this is what you seem to be saying, but I can't bring myself to believe that this is what you actually think.

And you also seem to be saying that anyone who dares to believe that some GMs know what they are doing and actually have information that we aren't privy to as fans has "been fooled" into thinking that?

That's not what you meant to say, right?

So, what you're saying is that any player who clears waivers is not a baseball talent worthy of a roster spot, right? Since these guys with uncommon talents passed on the bench player it clearly means no team could use him, right? This is what you seem to be saying. Do you want me to list some players that have cleared waivers and see if you think they are decent players? Clearly if a guy clears waivers it's the be-all and end-all and all discussion of the player should stop because the player would be of no help to our team... right? Or hey, I have an idea! Maybe some of us have been around baseball long enough to decide for ourselves - you know, what Branyan brings and what our bench needs? If there's some big secret about Branyan that "us fans" aren't privy to then there's still little harm in giving an 800k non-guaranteed contract to see for yourself. Why would you let other baseball GM's make decisions for your team?

I don't want to get into this particular debate but I would be appreciative if you could list some players that have cleared waivers. Just to help me get a little better perspective.

We could start with Manny Ramirez. He cleared irrevocable waivers before the 2004 season, and he hasn't been very good since then, has he.

Branyan has signed a minor league deal with the Devil Rays.

Russell Branyan signed a minor-league contract on Tuesday with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who are inviting him to spring training.

Branyan, 30, hit a career-high .257 with 12 home runs and 31 RBIs last season for Milwaukee, where he saw time at first base, third base and in the outfield.

To who?

I think it'd make more sense for them to trade him in July.

Financially, they'd be better off dumping him before the season starts. He's going to take up a giant chunk of their payroll, and their OF is overcrowded as it is.

The Astros once they collect insurance on Bagwell.

IMO they are still going to sign Roger in May and since he has said his body can't take a whole year anymore this makes a lot of sense to me. I think that if the Astros do collect insurance on Bagwell they are going to aquire a big time impact bat and he is going to be better than Huff.

Not gonna happen. In the unlikely event it does, I'll come back on and post a retraction.

Yeah, but he had a pretty bad year, so it'd make sense in terms of talent received to hold on to him for half a season and see if he can improve his numbers, then trade him.

Or risk having him just repeat his poor year and remove any doubt that he's not worth giving up much talent for.

It's a tough call for them. Obviously if he starts out 2006 hot, he'll be a more attractive asset to sell in July. What would be best is to try and get a decent package for him now (reducing cost) from a team that believes last year was a fluke. If nobody is offering up more than marginal trash, hold onto him and hope for a good start, because you can always find marginal trash.
