Zambrano - $7.2 / $6.0

Pierre - $6.5 / $5.0

Prior - $4.0 / $3.3

Hairston - $2.6 / $1.95

Ohman - $0.775 / $0.50

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that everyone of thes guys doesn't go to arbitration. The numbers are very close.

Z 1.2 mill

Pierre 1.5 mill

Prior 700 k

Hairston 650 k

Ohman 225 k

Considering Pierre's year last year, I'm surprised he wants so much. If he goes to arbitration, there's one more player you won't see next year.

So let's say at the very least 5.5 million more to the payroll. Probably closer to 8.5...

Give Z and Prior what they're asking. They're worth every penny. If you can lock up Z long-term for 7.5 per year, that is a steal.

Thats not much of a wager considering that, I believe, no player under MacPhail/Hendry has ever gone to arbitration.

Agreed. Though in Z's case, I bet they roughly split the difference, that's what they did last year, slightly closer to Z's number than the Cubs.

The additions are close to what most of us were predicting. I had run "budget numbers" assuming 6, 6, 4, 2, and 0.5 for Z, Pierre, Prior, JHJ and Ohman, respectively. So worst case it's MAYBE $2MM over what I have been figuring, and more likely, it'll be a million at best.

Assuming Walker stays, that means I have the payroll now at $94MM (assuming the +1MM arby results). Plenty of dough remaining to still acquire a player in trade before the season starts, or spend some of it as a signing bonus to get Lee, Z or Prior signed to an extension. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it were the latter.

Give Lee his 3/36 extension for example (he's due 9 this year), and include a $3MM signing bonus as part of the extension. That would get Lee to an average salary of $12MM per year for each of the next four years (including 2006), but the bonus would apply to this year's payroll (taking it to 97MM). Repeat as necessary with Z and Prior.

way too much has been made abour pierre's bas year. he still hit what .275 and stole what 50-60 bases?

both his request, prior, and zambrano's are legitimate in my opinion.

It doesn't surprise me either. He has no sense of loyalty to the Cubs, the media hyped him, Hendry paid big in prospects, why not in cash? I don't think he would get it in arby, but Hendry won't find out. He'll pay.

OBP of .326 at leadoff is around the team OBP of the cubs last year. terrible. that's what pierre is paid to do, get on freaking base.

I think it's also fair to say that the players are probably asking for much more than they expect so that there is room for negotiating. I doubt Zambrano, Prior, Pierre, et al expect to make what they have proposed. They understand it's best to start high and meet somewhere in between.

Arbitration isn't about last year's performance. Pierre has shown his value throughout his career, and that is what is measured.

Not in arbitration though. Start too high and you'll have no chance. The arbiter takes both figures and picks one. You want to aim high, but stay reasonable.

I agree, but the amounts that were presented weren't too far apart from what the Cubs countered. Unless someone(s) decides that he absolutely doesn't want to negotiate, the team should be able to avoid the arbiter.

Don't those dollar figures seem pretty low for Prior?

Not for a guy who is only in his first season of arbitration. Dontrelle who is also in his first year signed for 4.35 million. I don't think anyone would argue that Dontrelle didn't pitch better than Prior last season. So, considering Prior should make a little less than Dontrelle, the figures look about right.

OK. that makes sense, then.

Prior's been a real bargain for the Cubs, even with the unfortunate injuries.
