If I was the Orioles, I'd take that offer of Taveras and Lidge in a heartbeat.....

Huh? Who is Lidge going to close games for with the O's? And Taveras' stats are not good:

Taveras in his rookie year ('05) had very respectable #'s, and is great defensively. His #'s in the postseason where outstanding. Lidge is one of the best closer's in the game, regardless of his post-pujols-postseason demise. Miggy's #'s declined post-roid and may even further. How much would Lidge/Taveras get om '06? Then Miggy? Weigh the difference.....

The Orioles need to spend more $ and they'll have the cash to do so and receive great talent in return. Chen and Bedard had respectable seasons last year, and with the $ they saved, they could snag another quality starter. Taveras would solidify an outfield that has definite room for an improvement, and would make a nice 1-2 punch with Roberts.

Because we all know a 24 year old rookie should be required to put up all-star numbers. Taveras will get better. And Lidge is special. It would have been a solid deal for the Orioles.

no he didn't. he had a decent average, but that's negated by his inability to get on base as a leadoff hitter. what's more is that even with his speed, he was unable to hit for extra-bases. he's a bench player that's been pushed into the starting lineup. no amount of infield hits will make him good.

lidge may be one of the best closers in the game, but how is that worth a perrenial all-star shortstop?

ANY major league starter should be able to put up a .700+ OPS. anything below that is horrible for anyone, not just someone who starts everyday.

Willy at 23 was no better than Corey was at 22, and substantially worse than Corey was at 23.

And substantially better than Corey was at 26. Remember Corey at 22 and 23 was "untouchable"

yes, but the fact remains, tavares is not a starting-caliber player.

Wasn't Rosenthal they guy screaming that the Cubs were gonna trade Prior for Tejada? And that the Cubs were the "leaders" for his services? I don't believe much of what Rosenthal says at this point to be honest.

I would take Tavarez over Pierre.

Why? They are virtually the SAME player. So what makes Tavarez better then Pierre? (and don't say the age)

And the O's trading for Lidge in the proposed Tejada deal, would have made NO SENSE at all. The O's would be battling the DRays for last place in the East, thus Lidge would hve been pretty much useless for a team that would have very save opportunities. So that deal with Houston made no sense at all.

i must agree. as a fan of neither, i must say that tavares is a good little AAA hitter.

Well, Pierre has been a quite valuable MLB player during several seasons in his career, Taveras was awful last season, and there's nothing in his minor league record that suggests that he's ever going to be much more than he is right now.

Other than that, they are virtually the same player.

I don't remember Pierre throwing out any Cubs at homeplate.

I'd lump Gathright in that group as well. If he improves on his walk rate at the major league level, he will be a speedy lead off hitter with a respectable OBP and virtually no power.
