According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are no longer the favorites to acquire Corey Patterson from the Cubs.

Following the reports that the Orioles were close to acquiring Patterson, several teams contacted the Cubs and got into the mix, says the Sun. The Rangers, Mariners and Red Sox are among the teams that were previously reported to have interest in Patterson. If the Mariners acquired him, it would free up Jeremy Reed to be traded, probably to Boston. Jan. 8 - 4:17 am et

I like the fact that they are all AL teams!

Any guesses on who the M's, Sox and/or Rangers might be offering?

Not a clue. And, if it's minor leaguers like many suspect that's definitely not my area of expertise.

I don't understand why we(cubs) are trading C.Patt for a AA player. Get this straight I am not a huge fan of him BUT I don't want to just give him away for nothing. You never know when he could "snap" out of it. Platton him in left of right field. I don't know bout all of you guys but I am not ready to give up.

Depends on who the AA player is. If it's Dustin Pedroia or Val Majewski as two examples, then buh-bye Corey.

You know it's hard to fathom, but if given the chance to go back in time, we really would have been better off keeping Little Sarge over Corey the way things are looking.

If it's straight-up for Pedroia, I will move to Boston and buy season tickets for Red Sox games so I could laugh at their entire organization in person 81 times a year.

Not to sound stupid, but I'm unfamiliar with those prospects. Based on the reaction, I can figure out that they are solid prospects, but can someone give me more specifics on these two.

Cubs Close To Trading Former Top Prospect

O's had deal done till Nationals entered into talks

GM Jim Hendry has had discussions with numerous teams this offseason regarding Corey Patterson but not till now has it gotten serious. Apparently the O's are interested in Cubs CF Corey Paterson despite his struggles from last season. The O's front office is high on Patterson and feel that with good coaching he can be a 30-30 player which he was close to being a few season ago. The Cubs who were ready to send their CF to Baltimore earlier this week in return for 2 minor leaguers INF-Bryan Bass and P-Chris Britton have now entered into talks with the Nationals.

MLB GM INSIDER has learned the Nationals may be offering a more lucrative tandem including a pitcher with MLB experience in Ryan Drese and prospect Brandon Watson. The Cubs are holding out hoping to land a potential #4 or 5 starter and some Cubs scouts feel Drese is that player.

I now what kind of website it is...so take it with a grain of salt. So let's play with the situation a bit:

Drese/Watson for Patterson or Bass/Britton for Patterson?

Posted
WHY WHY WHY is Hendry obsessed with getting marginal improvements. Keep working on that #5 starter! Work on the 70 innings per bullpen arm!! Work on the 150 ABs per bench guy!!! RF??? Pshaw!!

Because he's a full 2 years removed from putting up those numbers in Wrigley...

You may see it that way, I see it as "Because he's survived Dusty Baker for two full years. Bash the guy if you want, but I hate the way this Cpatt situation has played out.

That was sarcasm.

If the Cubs had a chance to get Britton/Bass for Patterson and passed it up for Drese/Watson, that would be a tough pill to swallow. Personally, I can't see the O's offering Britton and I can't see the Cubs rejecting that offer.

Bass is your typical 1st round toolsy SS shifted to 3B, who hasn't advanced in the field enough defensively to play SS and shifted to 3B despite not hitting. But, he's too aggressive at the plate and hasn't hit for enough power or contact to be a viable prospect anymore.

Britton is a very good relief guy, unlike Cubs recent relief pitching prospects, has above avg. command. To go with that command, he has a mid 90s FB and a plus change. He would likely be between 10-15 as far as Cubs prospects.

His numbers from last year (High-A)

6W 0L 1.60ERA 46G 6SV 78.2IP 47H 15R 14ER 5HR 23BB 110K

110 strikeouts while only allowing 70 baserunners total.

Drese is your typical fluke sinker-baller, his '04 season was a fluke and any improvements would be b/c of a drop in BABIP. As SSR mentioned, the Cubs have too many of these btm of the rotation types as it is.

Watson is a CF'er with good range, decent arm, good speed, can hit for a decent avg., but doesn't draw BBs and can't hit for power as he's a slap-hitter. To quote BA, "For him to become an everyday center fielder in the majors, though, he must become a more patient hitter. Otherwise he'll just be the second coming of Endy Chavez." The Cubs don't have a strong track record of developing patience at the plate.

Minor league relief pitchers are a notoriously weak bunch at the major league level. See Aardsma, David. A kid with good relief numbers at A-ball doesn't impress me, certainly not for Patterson. The Cubs view minor league relievers so "highly", that's why they gave away JVB for nothing.

Drese sucks too, I guess Patterson is worth nothing more than the value of being able to dump his salary. Sad.

You mean like Cordero, Street, or Jesse Crain?

It would be awful to have Craig Hansen hanging around, too.

Drese was the Rangers opening day starter in 2005.

Drese is obviously nothing special, but, if getting him meant we could use Jerome Williams in a deal for a genuine #5 hitter, I'd make that trade for Patterson.

The difference between Williams and Drese isn't going to determine whether this team goes to the playoffs. The 2006 Cubs are going to need a significant contribution from Kerry Wood (or, in the alternative, a significant contribution from a surprise starting pitcher like Rich Hill or Angel Guzman).

Yeah, I vaguely remember him, though I have no recollection of his stuff. It was the the guys I was more curious about. Doesn't sound like any of them are all that special, which isn't surprising.

If we're going to deal Williams, then give Hill or Guzman a shot at the rotation. Hell, I'd rather give the ball to Rusch every fifth day than give Drese a shot.

In no way, shape, or form, do I view a 29/30 year old with a 5.32 career ERA (Drese) a suitable replacement for a 24 year old with a 3.92 career ERA (Williams).
