What a great way to start off my day.

Thank you.

A right-handed hitter, Grissom has a .272 career average in 17 seasons and will be trying to claim a backup job.

Didnt they say Neifi was only back-up when he signed in 2004?

...

I dont really expect one of Dusty's boys to only get the back-up.

I really dont have a clue as to what the Cubs are doing anymore. Dont we already have like infinity of these types of players already on the roster??

Another subpar outfielder.....sign me up please!

Can I be your agent and get 10%? 20? They're likely to over-pay you too.

Lets see, doing the math.....Marquis is 38 going into next season....hmmmm... I bet the Cubs signed him to a 3 year deal at 3 million per year.

But the dude isnt gonna get a chance to save us.

I really should go get ready for school...

i'm sure it was a minor league type deal

They are expected to reveal that veteran outfielder Marquis Grissom has agreed to terms on a minor-league contract for 2006.

That is correct.

I know this is just a minor league contract, but we currently have no other RH-swinging OF for the bench, so unless Hendry gets another one Grissom is pretty well assured of making the team if he can put up spring training numbers which aren't totally horrible.

I'll just repeat, once again, his line against left handed pitching in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

2003 - .364/.399/.657

2004 - .315/.356/.577

Now, I still fail to understand why it is a bad idea to see if this player can still mash left handed pitching, when our starting right fielder put this line up against them last year.

.201/.247/.370

154 ABs, Jones got 154 AB's against lefties last year. Now, if Grissom makes the team, and gets 100 AB's against lefties instead of Jones, he is worth the small amount of cash we'll pay him. Now, of course, if something stupid goes on like he takes considerable time away from Murton, then we have a problem.

Perhaps the answer is for Hendry to start acquiring more complete players instead of two guys taking up two roster spots.

I fail to see the scenerio where Baker routinely sits his "speedy" starting RFer who is signed to a multi-million, 3 year contract. I think this move further demonstrates the unlikelihood that CPatt or Walker will be on the 2006 roster, since it assumes Hairston will be primarily an IFer and CPatt would fall to the 6th OFer with the previous addition of Mabry.

I'll reiterate what I've said before: this signing jeopardizes Murton's playing time far more than Jones's.

I really don't mind this signing from a purely objective viewpoint.

It's very low-risk. If he's anywhere near his career average, he's fine. If not, he's signing a minor league deal, so who cares?

But since I KNOW the Cubs, and I KNOW Baker, I'm worried because I can already tell you he's making the major league roster no matter is spring numbers and $1 says he sees more time in Left (over Murton) than in Right (over Jones).

I want Hendry to stop signing these ancient, mediocre Giants.

If Grissom never sees an AB against right handed pitching, this is an ok move. Grissom can still play an acceptable outfield, and as was pointed out he pounds left handed pitching. However, we all know that Baker won't be able to resist the urge to get him in there regularly, so this is a move that weakens the lineup. As a part time player/late inning lefty punisher, he fits.

Interestingly, the same thing is true with Neifi. If you check his stats, he also pounds lefties, and should be used against righties only in emergencies. Unfortunately, the only time our manager rested Perez last year was when a left was on the mound. (BTW Bruce, any way you can subtly introduce Dusty to Neifi's right/left splits, through a question or something??)

2003 - .364/.399/.657 (148 PA)

2004 - .315/.356/.577 (159 PA)

Career - .285/.336/.467 (2641 PA)

2005 - .217/.245/.261 (49 PA)

Age - turns 39 in April

It's not a bad signing by any means because it's just a minor league contract. He's so old now though that past performance is no real indicator as to what to expect this year, and even if he can keep it up, the sum of his past performance against left-handers isn't good enough for him to deserve a spot on the major league roster, not when you consider how awful he is against right-handers and on defence. Players that are good for nothing besides hitting lefties are freely enough available.

This is why he's getting a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training and not a guaranteed deal.

If not for our manager, this would be a good risk/reward acquisition.

I agree that it's not a bad signing. I've edited my original post to illustrate that I posted the numbers I did not because I'm against the signing, but I'm against Wheelimus' spin on the signing.

Still, it's something of a pointless signing, because he's not really going to be needed at Triple-A, and he's not the best major league option out there if all you're looking for is someone that can hit lefties but does absolutely nothing else: .285/.336/.467 vs lefties isn't that special, and Grissom is a huge collapse candidate (if his 2005 is anything to go by, he's already collapsed).

I guess my question is this; What does Grissom provide that Hairston does not?

Unless Hendry thinks Hairston is going to be starting at 2B, I don't really understand.

I agree with Cacique and Diffusiuon on this. I am not particularly upset about it, I just don't get it. It makes little sense. May be JH is jealous that SF has an all-AARP outfield and is trying to catch up?
