Could the Cubs offer 12 or more to Clemens?

Would he be interested in pitching for the Cubs? Why waste money on a Weaver type when you could get a Clemens for 1 year at 12 -15? Unless his magic beans are not legal anymore I think it would worth a try.

I think Clemens has said he'd only pitch for the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, or Rangers.

yeah maybe in that game he pitched in the WS, but cmon...the guy was the most dominant pitcher in the league last year. I'd spend 12-15 million on him for 1 year in a heartbeat.

In Sept & Oct, he was 2-2 with a 4.33 ERA. Not exactly "breaking down" but not great either.

 

Though in the playoffs he did have a 5.63 ERA...hmm

The only problem is that if we get to the post season we will need another starter to fill in for Clemens.

I would give him $15M for 1 year and limit his innings. He can fly home in the summer. Get about 150 IP from him, and he'll be good down the stretch and the potential playoffs.

I don't see the payroll room, nor do I see the payoff.

 

At this point you have to overpay the guy just to get him to keep playing. Sure he should be good for an excellent 150 IP or so, but is that worth the $15m-18m you'd have to pay? The little nagging injuries are picking up a bit as well.

 

The Cubs haven't done much to improve this year, and this would make them better without mortgaging the future, so I wouldn't complain, but I'm not that's big on the idea.

I would put him on a Maddux-like pitch count and consider using a 6 man rotation.

I'd see if I could get him to lower the $$ amount if we would agree that he would only have to dress and be with the team on days he's scheduled to pitch.

He's on record saying he has no interest in pitching for anyone other than a handful of teams and we aren't one of them.

I hate Clemens.

 

Outside of that I have no problem with it. We know he doesnt want to come here though so it matters not.
