that actually seems like a deal, at this point.

he could have pitched this season, and if he was anywhere close to being decent, he could have commanded bigger numbers.

but nearly 10 mil per isn't bad, either, especially for a kid once traded for matt karchner.

Good Googly Moogly!

I'll take Greg Maddux for $9 Million, Alex.

I'll take Jon Garland over Mr. #5 starter anyday. Maddux's 3-year pre-retirement/retirement campaign with the Cubs has really disappointed me. I wonder if he will come into camp with another 15 lbs. this spring. The day Maddux takes one for the team and finishes what he started is the day I'll respect him again. This HOF and supposed "team-guy" begs out of more games than anyone in the league and works less than anyone on this team.

Just broke on ESPN Radio.

$7M in 2006

$10M in 2007

$12M in 2008

With Contreras, Buerhle, Vazquez, Garland, Garcia and McCarthy, it gives KW the flexibility to shop one for a bat. My guess: Garcia.

Kenny W. is flat out getting the job done.

I know that there is a lot of Sox hate on the forum, but you have to admit that they're not acting like a second tier team anymore.

The Cubs have more to hate than the WS.

Pop Quiz: Who faced the most batters for the Cubs in '04 and '05?

Answer: Greg "beg out" Maddux.

Garland's 3 previous seasons before last year weren't as good as Maddux's '05. Maddux is better quality than a #5 starter. That's assuming you generously peg a #5 starter as league average.

EDIT: To add Maddux is durable by league standards not just Cubs injury prone standards. 7th in IP, 8th in Batters faced in '05. 9th in IP in '04.

The point is Maddux doesn't care. He's out-of-shape and has one foot out the door. The point is he could be so much better if he still wanted to work at it. Maddux gets by on the knowledge he's attained over the years and has very little physical talent left. He's made no adjustments over the past few years and no better than a fifth starter on a contending team. In short he stinks for 50-60% of the year and gets paid like a #1-2 starter. I know he's a legend and noone has a bad thing to say about him. But I said it. I think he's the biggest 'me' guy on the team. So much for the guy who'd help Wood and Prior better pitchers. They were better before Maddux joined the Cubs.

Actually, he's better than every contending team's 5th starter.

Based on expected production, he's #5 in the rotation. I expect Z, Prior, Wood, and Williams to do better than him. When he was brought here, they had Clement as the #4 starter.

To spend that amount of money on who'll likely provide the 5th highest production out of 5 starters, while being paid as much as he is, is dumb.

If he had not pitched for the Cubs early in his career and left in the manner that he did (I blame Himes) leaving Cubs fans angry, sad, and disappointed, I doubt we would've seen him back.

Great reunion tour bringing back old memories and wondering what could've been, just spent too much for the tickets.

Maddux was underpaid at 6M in '04. He was overpaid at 9M in '05. I personally think he'll be about paid what he's worth next year, but I expect him to bounce back a bit from slightly above average to above average.

I wouldn't want Garland at that contract.

Me either. And I've been perhaps his strongest supporter as far as Garland turning the corner.

Considering:

"Giants and Morris agree to $27 million, three-year deal"

or

"Free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood reached a preliminary agreement Monday on a $60 million"

I don't think this deal is so bad.

Then your position is nuts. Look at what the AJ Burnetts and Kevin Millwoods of the world are getting. It's a below market value contract, especially given that it is only a three year deal.

EDITED: My bad.

average $10m a year is not below market for a mid-tier pitcher who hasn't even hit free agency.

Not to pick on Prior, but can we please cut this sort of nonsense out? It only leads to prolonged name-calling and in-fighting, and its becoming more prevelant around here.
