Herb Washington played in 105 major league regular season games, 2 playoff games and 3 World Series games.

He never had a single major league at bat, never set foot on the mound and never made a single put out defensively.

Baseball reference doesn't even list player comparisons by age for good ole Herb.

He has 3 offensive stats to his name. Runs scored (51), stolen bases (31) and caught stealing (17).

He was a career pinch runner.

Thats crazy that someone could completely avoid the battersbox or the field... (althought, he could have played in the field, but never made a play).

That I can't answer. I don't know whether he ever played an inning in the field, but it doesn't appear as though baseball-reference can answer it either. They have him listed as a DH for his fielding position. :D

I do remember him with the World Series Oakland A's though. I always thought he was Claudell's little brother. Not only was Herb older than Claudell, but there is very little evidence that would give one the impression they were related.

How many seasons did it take for him to get these stats?

If you were put in for a slow power hitter after his last at bat during any close game you could get those numbers in ony one season, as long as you had some other sporadic pinch running.

Over 2 seasons, but just barely. He was released in May of his second season. Not a very good stolen base ratio. I want to say he was a former sprinter in track and one of the fastest runners of that era. But, I have nothing to back that up.

I was just looking around at some player stats, and, for whatever reason, probably becasue he looks like frankenstein or something, I found that Tony Clark hit 30 HRs last year in 350 somethin ABs!

I thought it might be fun to post other stats that blew your mind!

I find it more amazing that he's only 33. I could have sworn he looked at least 40 the last time I saw him. 30 HR in 349 ABs is pretty darn impressive, though. I guess he liked what he saw of BOB last year (19 in 167).

The career numbers (minor league) of Steve Dalkowski, to go with that lack of control, he is the hardest thrower of all-time. Nothing like standing in there w/a pitcher who could hit 105 and not know where it's going.

The most versitile player in Baseball history.

Martin Dihigo

Combining his Dominican, American, Cuban and Mexican statistics results in a lifetime .302 batting average with 130 home runs (11 seasons worth of home run totals are missing) and a 218-106 (.673) pitching mark.

Herb Washington played during the advent of the designated hitter. Charlie Finley brought the guy in as Oakland's "designated runner."

That's because back then pitchers were real men and could pitch 300 innings so teams didn't have a 12 man staff. :player:

i'm pretty sure moonlight has 1 rbi

I don't think so. The only appearance was as a late-inning defensive replacement. He was never credited with a plate appearance that I can find.

well, the field of dreams reference was obvious to me when i typed it out. now that i read my post, it's pretty easy to see that no one else would catch it.

Maybe we should start a new thread where we talk about this guy:

All hail Timothy Busfield.
