You know if this trade goes down what a damn fool Hendry is. He had an opportunity to sign Tejada 2-3 years ago when he was a FA and Hendry didn't even bite even when we all knew AGone had to go. Now 2 years later he is willing to trade Prior who is 25 years old for Tejada who will be 30? This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time.

23 years here, it's been awhile.

Only 23? How can you sleep at night! At least you know what the World Series looks like.

Hah, honestly I thought 23 years would seem longer to you guys! I do vaguely remember 02, it was glorious.

What I wouldn't give for having a 23 year gap between World Series wins! At least then we know it's attainable in our lifetimes!

Ultimately it almost always comes down to pitching being the key to winning a WS. It's possible the Cubs have inside knowledge that leads them to believe Prior's arm issues are more serious than anyone here knows....

I think that is a very interesting comment. I had thought the same thing. Clearly, Prior wasn't the same pitcher last season...starting the season on the DL with elbow soreness, and then being hit with a line drive on his elbow in mid season. It's a heck of a gamble for the Cubs to take though.

I'm debating whether or not I'm more bitter about Hendry missing out on Tejada or Vlad, because Tejada would have been a bigger upgrade over AGonz than Vlad would have been over Alou, but Vlad is the better overall player.

Tough call.

I'm going to go break something, brb.

I'll echo what some others here have said and say that unless he has some secret knowledge about Prior's health -- like his right arm was amputated in a freak thresher accident over Thanksgiving -- Hendry would be nuts to remotely entertain a straight-up Prior for Tejada deal. When healthy, I think Prior's 2003 season is exactly what should be expected of him, and you don't just give a pitcher like that away, even for a player as good as Tejada.

I bet at the O's boards they are like:

Tejada/Bedard for Prior!?!?!?! No way do I do that deal! Prior can't even stay healthy!

And they would/should have valid concern.

I don't think Hendry is going to trade Prior straight up for Tejada. Our tubby lil GM loves pitches, and he'd make sure that he got something back in return.

I understand how wonderful Mark Prior is and that he's full of promise mixed with some past success -- but it IS possible to trade him and make this team better.

In my mind a Prior/Pie for Tejada/Bedard trade makes the Cubs much improved for 2005. With the way Hendry has hamstrung himself with the outfield, Pie is now nothing more than a valuable trading chip. And I've said for a while that Pie might have the most value to the Cubs in a trade; he's impossibly overhyped and other teams actually believe in it for once. It'd be very difficult for him to live up to everything that has been said.

I love Prior, but the people who are saying that we'd have to get Tejada/Bedard/Mora/a prospect in return for him are just insane. Other teams view him as a talented pitcher who has had one good (almost) full season. That's because they don't come equipped with blue-tinted glasses and Cubbie Kool-Aid mix.

I don't want to just send the Franchise off for nothing, but if we get a Tejada and another good pitcher in return, it's worth it. Heck, even if it was Prior for Tejada, there's no doubt the Cubs would be better four out of five days.

My point of that post was to point out all boards (including CardsTalk and myself) tend to overvalue their own players. Plus they always want something for pretty much nothing - like a 4 decent players for one stud type deal.

The pursuit and ultimate non-signing of Furcal is looking like a defining moment in recent Cubs history. I never dreamed the ripple effect it could have.

As has been stated: Really wish Hendry had just signed Tejada a couple years ago when he had the chance. I'm pretty high on Bedard, but man, moving Prior is quite a leap.

I actually agree, I wouldn't do the deal. The real key depends on how you'd fell about Bedard. That said this deal would make the Cubs better in 06 but the cost is too great.

I think Bedard could be a competent 2/3 starter if he manages to keep himself healthy. Markakis seems like he'll be a pretty good OF and Loewen looks like the ground ball version of Rich Hill. Along with Tejada, I'd happily have any of those guys in this organization.

But, that kind of move just signals desperation and idiocy on Jim Hendry's part, in my opinion. I'm still concerned about Prior because some one must have thrown a black cat at him, but the fact remains that he has the potential to be the best starting pitcher in baseball and that he'll be under the Cubs' control until 2008. He is the kind of guy I do NOT want to find myself looking back on after watching him win a bunch of Cy Youngs and saying to myself, "I remember when he used to be a Cub...he was pretty good..." while drowning my sorrows in a pint of beer. He's on the same level as Zambrano, in my mind.

The multiteam aspect of this deal has me curious, though. I'd like to know who the third and (potentially) fourth teams are and what players are rumored to be moved.

Maybe he'll be shipping Derrek Lee off to Boston in exchange for Matt Clement!

The 3rd team? My guess would be the Angels.

Rotoworld says the third team is the Red Sox and Manny...surprise!

Boston gets: Prior

Baltimore gets: Manny

CHN gets: Tejada and Bedard

obviously others would have to be involved to complete the deal.

I say skip Tejada. Prior for Manny straight up.

here's my question. I read a few blogs and one in particular goes out of their way to point out that the Cubs didn't sign Tejada when they had the chance. now, I know the Cubs had the chance to do so but was CHicago a top-choice for Tejada?

It's hard to believe that Theo actually put Manny on waivers just a couple of years ago...

The top choice for Tejad was who ponnied up the bucks. The cubs didn't even make an offer, IIRC. Similar to Giles this year.

And harder still to believe that no one bit.

At the time we thought Nomar could stay healthy for us...didn't need a SS.

The official report:

The Orioles and Cubs have discussed a swap of Miguel Tejada and Mark Prior, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

A source told Rosenthal that talks are stalled because the Cubs want Erik Bedard along with Tejada and the Cubs want Felix Pie or a top pitching prospect in such a deal. The source also says the Red Sox are involved in talks and could be trying to land Prior, with Manny Ramirez going to Baltimore. Dec. 22 - 2:50 am et

I'm a little surpised to read all this "Cub luck" business on here. No offense, but I really thought you guys were a little more rational.

you try going through 97 years of baseball purgatory and tell me how rational you get.

the only reason some people look lrational around here is because they'vre come full circle. in short, they're so crazy that they're sane.

Miggy is coming to Chicago. In the end I bet the O's relent because Tejada wants out.

no, don't say that.

miggy's staying in baltimore and the cubbies are keeping their ace.

there's only one miggy that i'd trade prior for, and it ain't tejada.

Or maybe the Cubs are trying to trade Prior because they heard he wants out as soon as possible. After all, a level-headed guy like that may not want to keep performing for a circus.

Here's the question. Is there any 3 way deal with an AL West team that involves Prior and Miggy that you guys would accept?

**goes to research to answer own question**
