I know this guy's coming off of a terrible year, but wouldn't he be a perfect platoon with Jones? He's been awesome against lefties and wouldn't cost very much.

Very, very good OPS vs. the lefties.

Eric Byrnes - OF - Orioles

Orioles non-tendered outfielder Eric Byrnes. Dec. 21 - 1:47 am et

Was non-tendered. He has a .885 OPS agains LHP over the past three years. Would he make a good platoon mate for Jones?

Now this is a guy I'd be worried about playing over Murton. Dusty might like his "grittiness" or something.

FYI:

Larry Bigbie - OF - Cardinals

Cardinals agreed to terms with outfielder Larry Bigbie on a one-year, $900,000 contract.

He can earn an additional $25,000 each for 500 and 550 plate appearances. Bigbie might be the Orioles left fielder against right-handers next season. Dec. 21 - 1:57 am et

Now that's a weird platoon. The Cards will have Bigbie against lefties and the O's get him back to face righties? The frequent flier miles will be great, but LB's jetlag will surely taint his production at the plate.

I actually loled at this.

That would be a nice pickup. Still ridiculous that at $100MM payroll team needs to platoon players, but we're at where we're at.

Kookie and Frere Jacques, OK.

Nice theory, but it's not like there was a long list of good RF's available. The pickings were thin. RF's not an easy position to fill nowadays.

Byrnes wouldn't be bad as a fourth or fifth outfielder. We have some extra payroll, so he'd be a decent option.

Plus he's athletic and can catch the ball, so Hendry should be all over him.

My only fear is that Dusty would play him over Murton.

Posted

Not only would Dusty play him at the first sign of Murton going into a slump, but there's no way we sign Jones for $5.3 mil per year to platoon him.

As an aside, I'm guessing we'll soon find out that Neifi is our starting 2B for 2006 as well. I just don't think the organization likes Walker and we signed Neifi to WAY too high of a contract for him to be a guy off the bench.

OH GOD NOW THE CUBS ARE GOING TO SIGN BYRNESBRAIN

Agreed, so now the Cubs could pay 2 guys about the same as having 1 very good player. I've defended Hendry in the past. But its getting harder and harder to do so.

It's easy enough that 14 other NL teams got more production out of RF last year, and I'd say it'll easily be 10 teams this year.

If Hendry was blindsided by a lack of supply, it's his own damn fault.

Spectacular against lefties, awful against righties, spectacular and awful on defence. If he's available at a decent price, platoon with Jones.

What teams would look at Byrnes as a starter? If there are none, he'd definitely be a nice option for the bench.

It doesn't look like he'll be starting anywhere. The Cubs need to pounce now.

Eric Byrnes - OF - Orioles

Pirates officials have spoken the past two days with agent Mike Sasson about Eric Byrnes.

If he's a better choice than Juan Encarnacion, it's only because he'd cost less than Encarnacion. Not only should Byrnes not start over Craig Wilson, but he'd be a weaker choice than Jody Gerut against right-handers. If Byrnes is signed, Wilson would likely be traded. The Red Sox could view him as a platoon partner for Trot Nixon and the Indians could consider pairing him with Ben Broussard. Dec. 23 - 1:21 am et

Gerut is somebody the Cubs ought to trade for....oh yeah they already did.

For the Cubs to get Byrnes, they either have to project him as a 4th OF'er or realize that Jones is best off as a platoon player. I think they'd likely see him as a 4th OF'er 1st.

If Burnitz faced the high amount of LH'ers as he did, I assume Jones will do likewise.

I wanted us to hold on to Gerut. So much for that.

I wanted us to hold on to Dubois...so much for that.

(Wouldn't Dubois look good as Jones's platoon partner)
