Here is a map showing what it is called in reference to geography:

For me personally, it's pop.

Sodapop.

People who refer to all soft drinks as Coke piss me off.

Customer: "I'll have a Coke."

Concessionaire: "Will a Pepsi be all right?"

Customer: "Uhhhhh" *confused*

Or when somebody asks for a Coke and you give them a Coke and they get mad because you didn't ask them what kind of Coke they wanted. It's a specific brand, people.

I used to live in Virginia Beach, VA. They said Coke all the time there, and I was one of them. I've lived in the Chicago suburbs calling it pop for almost 12 years now. But to top it all off, I go to school in Milwaukee where they call it soda. Let's come up with one name already!

Liquid carmelized sugar?

You can't call it coke cause you might end up with something else (paging Doc Gooden).

How about "soft drink"?

My linguistics class used that exact same map to discuss language variation. Crazy. Anyone notice that STL is randomly soda?

It's coke where I'm from, but I have enough sense to say "Dr. Pepper" when someone asks me what I'd like to drink.

Anyone who calls it "coke" is a moron. Coke is a brand name. You dont say "man, i need some burger king." "oh ok, what kind of burger king do you want?" "mcdonalds, please"

But when you blow your nose do you ask for a Puffs? Most people ask for a Kleenex which is a brand name...

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3).

When it is mixed with an acid liquid it releases the gas carbon dioxide (CO2):

NaHCO3 + H+ -----> Na+ + H2O + CO2

CO2 = carbonated = baking SODA is used to make SODA

Furthermore, pop is a verb and an onomatopoeia - not a beverage.

Coke I can understand a little more, because we use brand names a lot. Like Puffs vs Kleenex as was said. Also, I don't clean my ears with "cotton swabs", they're Q-Tips. Who uses a "bandage" when they can use a "Band-Aid"?

Yeah, I grew up in STL and I say soda. Anyone who says "pop" is just flat wrong, by the way. Get with the times people.
