Can the Cubs trade Hendry to the Sox for KW?

Chris Young and Felix Pie are comparable prospects, only Young managed to put together 466 ABs in the Southern League last season. .277/.377/.545 with 26 HRs and 32 SBs. He led the league in runs, doubles, and homers. He is a year older than Pie and has issues with Ks (129 last season, but 70 BBs) and oozes potential in CF.

The White Sox get an immediate upgrade from El Duque, but they give up their best prospect in the process.

Why would you want to downgrade at the GM spot? KW is a terrible GM, who got EXTREMELY lucky with his moves last yr. My bet....Javy Vazquez will stink with the Sox.

The fun part is that White Sox fans are currently speculating that they could trade Jon Garland + Juan Uribe for Miguel Tejada since this deal gives them six starting pitchers.

Heh.

With as horrible as Baltimore's pitching is, that might be a decent trade for them... provided that they managed to put together an insanely good defense to deflate his numbers like they were last year.

And Uribe aint bad, I always use him for my utility infielder on MVP 2005. :)

Garland's a free agent after next season. If the Orioles trade Tejada, it's guaranteed they're going into rebuilding mode. Somehow I don't think they'd do this deal just to dump salary, especially considering Tejada's impressively reasonable contract.

They'll want good prospects.

This trade is bad for the sox unless they can flip one of their extra starters for immediate offensive help.

When you have a rotation of Buehrle/Garcia/Garland/Contreras/McCarthy you dont trade your top prospect for help in the starting pitching department.

That's assuming Peter Angelos wouldn't fork over the necessary cash to sign Garland to an extension... which he obviously would.

Good point. I'm not sure of Williams's motives. I am sure that they're not getting Tejada.

If I were KW, I'd rather keep McCarthy + El Duque + Young instead of having Vazquez at double the salary. Buehrle, Contreras, Garland, Garcia, McCarthy with El Duque as the swingman and backup starter.

Especially, when your team ain't exactly the '27 Yankees. I mean...why the Sox feel they NEEDED to upgrade their pitching, when they have HOLES at SS, 3B, and catcher. Then you have a rookie in CF, that puts a heavy burden on Pods/Tads/Konerko/Thome/Dye to produce, cause that bottom half of the White Sox lineup, ain't good enough to start for the Florida Marlins. But hey KWilliams is the "genius" in Chicago.

And yet the Sox have managed to get a power hitter, a new starter and a key utility man this offseason, all three the Cubs claimed they needed.

The Cubs have traded 3 young pitchers for an OF with a noodle arm that had a sub .700 OPS last year.

And the White Sox are the team that won the World Series last year remember?

:?: The Sox could use upgrades at SS and 3B, but they don't have holes at those positions. Uribe and Crede do play solid defense. Uribe's arm strength is just below Furcal's, and while Crede has been a horrendous offensive failure, his September and October offensive explosion could hint that he's figured out the other half of the game. Pierzynski is decent too.

It'd be hard for KW to upgrade on either of those "holes" given the payroll he works with.

That said, I agree with your point that he shouldn't be targeting more pitching.

edit: Don't forget that KW did address two of your complaints, CF and 3B, by trading for Rob Mackowiak if either Anderson or Crede fail.

If Williams now deals a starter of his own for immediate offensive help, I like the way he's exploiting the starting pitching market. Garland + Uribe for Tejada I don't think is that far fetched, probably a bit short, and it'd be a fantastic bit of work by the Sox. Sell high on Garland, who you've replaced with Vazquez, and an upgrade from Uribe to Tejada for the price of Young and whatever else it costs to secure Miggy, if anything. El Duque had negative trade value, he's old, useless (5.12 ERA in 2005, 4.97 FIPS) and due to earn $4.5m plus incentives in 2006.

But my guess it that Williams isn't thinking along the same lines as me, and so has just dealt one of his best prospects for a surplus starter.

KW is by far a better GM than Jim Hendry. Sure there is some luck involved, but he works with half the payroll that Hendry does.

I have no idea what KW is doing. As far as I can tell, he's added three HUGE contracts this year for Thome, Konerko and Vazquez. Thome and Vazquez are talented but are recent busts, given the $$. Sure, he got some money from Cleveland but Thome's contract remains rather large and long-term (I think it goes through 2008, at least). I have to assume he's flipping one of his starters... otherwise this makes no sense.

Exactly. Williams is not lucky; he's good. And better than our guy, unfortunately.

Bruce Levine was reporting on the 8 or 8:20 ESPN 1000 update that the Sox offer for Tejada would be McCarthy, Uribe, and prospects, and that the Cubs 5 player offer was still out there. Levine also said that don't believe what is being said out of Baltimore, Tejada is on the trading block.

If true, the White Sox would be dumb to trade McCarthy and better off trading off Garland.

I wouldn't call it dumb. The Orioles aren't going to want Garland for Tejada. They'll want McCarthy.
