According to CBS Sportsline:

"While the Astros would be interested in acquiring an outfielder such as Kevin Mench or Brad Wilkerson, of the Texas Rangers, there's reason to believe the club might have something much bigger planned, perhaps attempting to go after Baltimore's Miguel Tejada or Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu, says the Houston Chronicle."

So, we go to Texas and say "we'll help you get Tejada... and it will cost you Young."

Texas gets Tejada and Walker.

Baltimore gets Wilkerson, Cedeno and Williams.

We get Michael Young.

Is that appealing to anyone?

Ok we trade Walker, Cedeno, and Williams and get bact Michael Young? And I thought we overpaid for Pierre. No thank you. Why not just take that same package and offer it to Baltimore for Tejada straight up? The Cubs would have to get another player in the deal.

Considering age and cost Young > Tejada

Maybe it's just me but that blurb reads like it's Houston that might go after Tejada/Abreu, not the Rangers.

Ehh, 2005 is the only year he was impressive on the road, I'd be weary of his splits. Plus, hes basically a secondbaseman playing shortstop. Aren't their plans right now to move Young to second and slot Kinsler in at short?

Yes, you are correct.

Considering age and cost Young > Tejada

Young is supposedly a horrible defensive SS.

Besides....Baker doesn't like to play the YOUNG player, ya'll know...

*crickets*

But seriously, this thread looks like a moot point because Houston is the team supposedly going after Tejada and Abreu and not Texas.

It's unlikely we do anything with Texas at this point, with Hendry pet Alfonso Soriano now gone, and Texas on record as overshooting and asking for the moon for Kevin Mench. I think most potential suitors, including the Cubs, have moved on. And that's a good thing, Mench doesn't interest me much...neither does Wilkerson.

Tampa is the team I hope Hendry is talking with.

What is Houston going to give Philly for Abreu? Now that they've traded Padilla, the Phils are not going to settle for anything less than a front end starter. If the Astros want him, they better be prepared to cough up Pettitte or Oswalt.

I would agree, but an OF of Murton/Pierre/Huff would be absolutely brutal defensively.

This has been something that has been bugging me for most of the offseason, especially since The Raj told the Astros to go fly a kite.

The Astros have a lot of trading chips that they could put to use. Roy Oswalt has had his share of injuries, but is likely at the height of his trade value (especially after going into St. Louis and shutting down the Cardinals in the NLCS). Andy Pettitte had one heck of a season last year. Backe is solid, albeit unspectacular. Brad Lidge is still a valuable commodity as a closer and would automatically solidify any bullpen. They have some good young pitching (Hirsh, Nieve, Astacio, Buchholz).

If you remember, their primary problem last season was a sheer lack of offense. They haven't exactly gone out and done much about it so far in the offseason. SS and RF are both areas that they could upgrade in the offseason.

This is a team that could put together a very attractive package pitching-wise. While the Cubs could potentially do the same, I get the feeling that the Astros are more willing to part with certain guys than the Cubs are (mostly due to age, contracts, and injuries).

I would not be surprised one bit whatsoever if the Astros end up landing a big bat during the offseason.

Oh, they could, but why? If they trade Oswalt or Pettitte and Roger doesn't come back in May, they have little or no shot at the playoffs, even with Abreu. If they keep Oswalt and Pettitte and deal Backe + Lidge for Abreu, they are equally screwed, IMO.

I used to fear they would acquire Dunn, but I don't think Adam is going anywhere since Casey has been dealt.

O_O, I've heard from a couple places that the Stros payroll is pretty much tapped out assuming Bagwell is back for the full season.

How could that be true, don't they now have the money they would have paid Clemens?

Last year the Astros payroll was around 85 million dollars.

This year, they owe Pettitte 17.5 million, Bagwell 17 million, Berkman 14.5 million, Oswalt 11 million, and Biggio 4 million. That's 64 million for just 5 players. Lidge and Ensberg will get nice paydays in arbitration. They do have some money to spend, but they have to be careful how they allocate it as there's just not a lot of wiggle room there.

Moot point, but he was 4th among AL SS last year in fielding pct at 974 (18 errors).

By the way, Neifi was #3 in all of baseball at 982. So he does have that going for him, which is nice.

In addition, that money to Clemens was always referred to as "special money" by McClane. Still seems hard to believe though with that added revenue from a WS run.
