Dan Patrick on ESPN Radio talking with Bob Bightengale from USA Today:

The Mets will need a third team to get involved with Boston for a Manny deal and he thinks it is the Cubs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what he said the proposed deal would be:

Boston gets: Milledge, Heilman, and cubs prospect

Mets get: Manny Rameriez

Cubs get: Cliff Flyod

Floyd was able to stay healthy last season and had a monster year. Guess it depends on what they would be asking for Flyod.

Dont know how reliable Bightengale is, just passing on the info.

Don't know about anyone else, but I DON'T want Floyd anywhere near the Cubs....don't know why Hendry is so fascinated (SP?) with him.

I hope this is wrong. I just DO NOT like CF's game. Seems like for every decent move Hendry makes, here comes a couple of moves to make you scratch your.... hmm.. head. Say "NO" to Cliff Floyd kids.

Well, SOMEONE has to play RF. If all it takes is one prospect not named Guzman, Pie or Pawelek to bring in Cliff Floyd, I'm all for it. Floyd is signed for just this coming year, so it's not a long-term committment. He's no all-star, but he's better than Burnitz and Huff, so that's something.

I would not offer a significant prospect for Floyd. Especially if they want us to pay the remainder of his contract.

Not only did the Mets do us no favors on Sosa last year, but they helped hamstring the situation to what it became. Chaos.

If they want us to take Floyd to help them reduce salary enough to take on Manny, they get Jon Koronka or someone of even lesser value.

Other than that, I do like Floyd. Not sure about his ability to play 162 games. Not sure about his ability to play RF.

I wouldn't mind a Floyd, Murton, Pierre, Bradley outfield though. Floyd and Murton split time in LF.

Floyd is also a left fielder. I think he has only played something like 60 games in right.

I hope this rumor isn't true, but again the Cubs could do worse. Cliff is a very streaky hitter though, very streaky.

it might have something to do with his 34 hr's, 98 rbi & .863 ops last year (not to mention that he hits left handed & is a local guy).

Floyd crushes RHP.

I think it would be a tad bit ironic that Hendry wouldn't be able to get the impact player this offseason, but he'd help the Mets get the most significant impact bat of the offseason. [-(

Some people on this board need to get perspective. Not every deal has to focus on a superstar.

Floyd's recent seasons are near his career norms, which are very respectable:

.281 .361 .494 .855

Sliding Floyd's left-handed bat inbetween Lee and Ramirez sure looks good to me.

Some of you are going to go ballistic, but you should know that many baseball insiders don't believe Murton will be one of the Cubs' top three outfielders.

I think that's an excellent idea.

If it's not Pie or something like that, then yes, I'd do it IF Floyd can handle RF. I'm not sure. I'm also not against having him in LF if they are still going to get a productive RF.

Ironic and pathetic at the same time.

Bring in Floyd and either Mench or Kearns to platoon in RF. I think Floyd would be a great addition depending on the cost.

But we know that Baker would never do that. I want Murton in LF until he proves that he can't do it. If Floyd can't play right field, then we should look elsewhere.

As someone else said, the Mets did us no favors with the Sosa situation last year. I see no reason why we should help them out with the Manny trade unless if significantly helps us.

Behind Dunn, Manny, Drew and Abreu, I think Floyd probably has the highest potential to help the team in the next two years of any potential corner OF target. He's almost a guarantee for a 350+ OBP, he's going to give you an 800+ OPS. He's very comfortable of flirting with 900, once he gets outside of Shea. He isn't the ideal age, but he's not old or very expensive. He's an injury concern, though. Give me Mench and Floyd, and RF is pretty darn good.

Let's say you get 600 at bats apiece from LF and RF. Divide it up so Murton, Mench and Floyd each get around 400, and you should have a pretty good OF.

Make the prospect a Rich Hill type and not a Felix Pie type and I'll take it. Floyd as our RF would be easy to take.

Nothing ironic or pathetic about it. The list of impact bats that satisfy this crowd is usually 5 players long at most, so it's pretty darn close to a no-win situation people put him in. Floyd for one year is a nice addition.

I heard the interview and this is not what Nightengale said. What he said was that the Mets needed a third team to do any deal for Manny.

He then said that if the Mets got Manny and still had Cliff Floyd that the Cubs would probably want to trade for Floyd. He never said anything about the Cubs being in a three-way deal involving Manny.

i would say they are wrong as the "baseball insiders" quite often are. hendry really seems to like murton and looking at his performance last year he is almost sure to be penciled in as the starting left fielder. it doesnt hurt that he is the only player left from the nomar trade and that hendry reportedly insisted on him being included for the deal to go down.
