What kind of leadoff man needs SLG %? His job is to get on base regardless if its bunting, singles, or doubles. Sure I'd prefer doubles, but the guy gets on base.

Bottom line.

.248 batting average of leadoff hitters in 05.

Pierre is a monster upgrade.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! Let's just assume Pierre bounces back to norm. Say he posts a .340 OBP 2006. .248 out of leadoff for us last year. MONSTER UPGRADE indeed. How do you think that will effect Lee's RBIs and our runs scored out of lead-off. Quite a bit I think. Thanks for pointing that out.

To further your point:

Be it at 2b or SS, Neifi' going to be there opening day, Dusty will find a way. Therefore, who's more acceptable leading off, Neifi or Pierre?

Dusty proofing isn't improving.

If Walker is traded, odds are pretty decent that Neifi will bat 2nd, at least for a significant portion of the season.

I know it isn't but, he'll be the Manager next season, that's not going to change. Any aquisition that saves him from himself is a positive in my book - how sad and pathetic is that!

I had considered Neifi in two spot, don't honestly know if it's better or worse than him leading off.

Not if the Lugo rumors are true. Lugo would bat 2nd (possibly first with Pierre second). Most importantly, if Neifi cracks the starting lineup he would be in the 7th or 8th slot like he belongs.

Sorry I didn't read your previous post who is this other player? Walker?

And I can agree, Dusty Proofing is not improving as much as we could. Dusty is a BIG PROBLEM. I wish he were not here! But he is so unfortunatly we have to make a move like this as to say "Look Dusty this is a speedy lead-off guy so you have to bat him 1st"

If we had a better manager last year In September we would have had Walker bat 1st and Murton bat 2nd EVERY DAY. And before that Walker 1st and perhaps Barret 2nd. I am not going to argue that.

But I will argue that Pierre is a GOOD pick-up for us. He walks more than he strikes out, he has very good speed, and he will help this team next year.

Did anybody else notice the header for the stat portion of Kiley's article?

I'm going to assume that nobody even saw it, because there is no way that it wouldn't have popped up in 25+ pages about Pierre.

BATTING IN THE JUAN-HOLE

I kid you not. That sounds like potentially the dirtiest thing I've ever heard. Or, somebody forgot to pass that by a middle schooler to ensure that it's not taken out of context in this manner.

POW! RIGHT IN THE JUAN-HOLE!!!

Incredible.

Will he get to wear #9, or was that retired in honor of Damon Buford?

Damon Buford? No no no. If anything, the number should be retired in honor of Scott McClain.

That said, the number should be open for Pierre once he gets around to picking his Cubs uniform number.

Henry Blanco, Jody Gerut and Scott McClain all had flings with the number 9 last season. But Pierre will get his 9.

But then Henry switched to 24, and became Hank White, Superstar catcher!

The Cubs will hold a press conference at 4pm to announce the trade

THANKS FOR THAT! I'm looking foward to watching that. I missed the Eyre and Howry PCs. What channel would that be on Direct TV in Chicagoland? I know what channel Comcastsportsnet is, but I'm a little scetchy with the different WGN channels.

I don't know if it will be on television however, wgnradio.com is probably the best place to hear it. Also, espnam1000.com said, moments ago, that they "hope to have" Hendry and or Juan Pierre come on for an interview.

Stay tuned.

Thanks, I'll keep an ear on the radio then (it's not like I'm not glued to it already). Is this going to be the whole introduction the new player, putting a Cubs jersey over his suit thing. Will Juan Pierre be there? Or is this just Hendry announcing it by himself?

I just came home...

I, also, just came home.

I am not pleased with this trade. Seems like a mighty hefty price tag for someone who had a .326 OBP last year. And for what its worth, i'm psycic. I called this. I actually heard that we traded for pierre around 1:30 or so today. I asked who we traded and the kid was like "Mitre and some other prospects". I said, and I quote... "I bet Hendry gave up Pinto and Nolasco."

and Pierre only got on base at a .326 clip last year. I bet that's not much higher (if at all higher) than what our leadoff men got on at last year. Average is all well and good, but really, if player A has a .300 avg, and player B has a .250 avg, and both players have a .320 OBP, who gets on base more? Neither, OBP is what you want in leadoff men. I would hardly call him a MONSTER upgrade.

Oh, and you mention you want your leadoff man to be able to steal....he got caught 17 times (out of 74 attempts) last year.

You may say he had a much better year in 04, which, avg/obp wise he did, but his Base stealing was even more atrocious. he was caught 24 out of 69 attempts!

The team was at .299 last year.

Edit: Our opponents were at 362

I bet it was. The Suntimes says that the cubs plugged in 8 different leadoff batters and they hit a collective .248

I'll bet that translates to a much lover OBP. As I recall, we hardly ever had the first hitter on base (much less the second). D Lee batted first in a lot of innings too. It was pathetic.

Thank you very much. So i guess he has a 27 point upgrade. Thats a big jump, I still maintain that we could've done alot better with those prospects. Either way, at lesat it wont be neifi, thats something we can ALL agree on.

Can't believe some people are disappointed with this deal. It's not quite on par with Hendry's previous robberies, but it's damn good considering the circumstances. Everybody knew the Cubs were desperate and the free agent market is extremely thin. Hendry gave up very little to get a guy that will be very good for our offense. Who even knows when Nolasco or Pinto would have gotten their shot and Mitre already blew his.

Even if we gave up much more, this would have been an okay deal because we were so desperate. If not Pierre, then who? The alternative would be watching Corey struggle to keep his OBP over .300. Oh but that's okay, because we would have had two really solid mop up men for 2007.

Posted

well, even though on paper it looks like we gave up too much, we had to make room on the 40man roster anyway for mabry and whomever else.

so someone from the 40man had to go regardless.

Unbeleivable how bad our leadoff men were last year. Just pitiful. Juan Pierre better help get Derrek Lee more than the 107 RBI's he had last year, as opposed to the 130ish Lee deserved.

So Pierre was the only option available?

Wilkerson, Bradley, and Castillo were/are available.

When would Pinto and Nolasco get their shot? 1-3 years. It's not giving up prospects that is the problem. It's what we gave up in relation to Pierre's value, who is a FA after next season.

Those are some pretty depressive stats. I feel so sorry for Lee and our pitching staff could have done better than that.

Anyway I like the Pierre trade. The cost may have been high but at least we have someone at the top to get something done. I think Pierre will do fine and have no issues with this trade at all.

To only look at his OBP from last year is not going to give you a true indication of how he is likely to perform. Take his career average OBP or his last three year OBP average, and then you will have a more likely idea of what kind of OBP he will produce. So he projects to actually be a significant improvement in OBP in the leadoff spot from last year.
