Who says Pierre has to be a one-year rental? Why can't he be extended to two or three years? Why can't Pie play right when he gets called up?

That's not out of the realm of possiblity. First of all, Pie is still very young so, depending on his progress in 2006, the Cubs may decide to extend Pierre.

Kiley in the Suntimes says this:

Pierre is eligible for salary arbitration this year, but look for the Cubs to try to sign him to a multiyear deal either now or next year.

However, I don't think the Cubs would play Pie in RF.

I am kinda of lukewarm on this trade - I don't mind who we gave up but I wish we had traded for Bradley' date=' Wilkerson, or Rios instead. [/quote']

Nice to see some optimism & realism from a poster on this board. It's a nice change. GJ!

That's a nice change? From what. It echoes much of the sentiment that many others have expressed.

So now both Chicago teams have 2 of the fastest players in MLB. I like this move the only knock on Pierre as far as I'm concerned is his weak arm in CF.

I think Patterson is faster than either of them but doesn't use his speed as well.

I am kinda of lukewarm on this trade - I don't mind who we gave up but I wish we had traded for Bradley, Wilkerson, or Rios instead. Pierre is a significant upgrade over what we had last year and hopefully he will rebound in a contract year and his trend of playing well in day games will continue. My hope he is our pest ala Eckstein for the Cards.

It would be even nicer if someone didn't follow up an optimistic and realistic post with a slam on everyone else. Please stop!

Well that would make me throw up in my mouth. I can sorta see the reasoning behind Hendry giving multi-year deals to guys coming off career years, but a guy coming off a bad, bad season? That idea shouldn't even be entertained. I mean again.

So i go to hospital for a day and it all kicks off!! Anyone want to summarise this 25 page thread? Any ideas on the 2nd trade to take place??. From a personal point of view i learned that i may go blind within a few months so at least i wont be watching pierres awful defence next year!! I'll just listen to Rons howling instead!!!

It would be a lot cheaper to sign a player coming off of a down year than a player coming off a career year. It still wouldn't be worth it if the contract was very long, though.

Cheaper? Perhaps. But Hendry is known for giving raises to guys coming off crappy years, I'd hate to see what he'd offer Pierre. 3/18?

There have been alot of posts here, I didn't read them all, but I just wanted to chime in.

There have been alot of negative posts about Pierre, but I like this move. In my opinion we are just a few peices away from a very good contending team. We have to remember we smashed the big guys like Cardinals and Astros. We just had a problem beating the teams we were supposed to. So maybe by making some changes and adding some good hitters to our already established stars is all we need? Pierre has a career over .350 OBP. That's exactly what the doctor ordered to be batting in front of Lee. I bet Lee is already salivating about his RBI's next year.

We get a slugging power hitting RF, possibly even make a move of an IF of Lugo/Cedeno and add a starting picther. And we are no team to scoff at. I personally want to see us make moves like this to put a winning team on the feild NOW.

the problem is, i don't think the cubs can get a stud rf. and that's the only way i'd feel all right w/ pierre in center.

I think they can. If it's true they had about $20-$22 mil before Pierre then they still have around $15 mil salary. If you move Patterson, Walker, Williams ect. . for your other trades then you have another $5-$7 mil added to that.

We could get a power RF and still get another starter. I'm taking the wait and see route. So far I am pleased we finally made a move to improve our team NEXT YEAR from THIS YEAR and will just wait and see what happens next.

at least we bought low.

And paid high.

haha, i know. i'm just trying to make this less painfull.

i hope we get jack wilson. then this offseason will really rock.

Yeah, I would say go all out and make an all-defense team with Wilson and Jacque Jones, but Pierre can't even field, so that's no fun.

I can't believe I thought well of Jack Wilson until someone recently enlightened me. He's been around longer than I thought, I thought last year was his second year for some reason. Jack Wilson would be a servicable MIF backup, that's it, but we already have that, in Neifi.

Jeez man, I'm sorry

Pierre has played every game the last 3 years, he works hard, and he walks more then he strikes out. Hes the best leadoff hitter the Cubs have ever had.

I'll take him.

who's that power RF gonna be? i've all but given up hope of dunn/abreu? what other power RF's are out there to be had? it's not like there's a giles or vlad sitting there on the FA market ripe for the picking.

i could have lived w/ two B outfielders (wilkerson, bradley, etc). i could have lived w/ a C outfielder (pierre) coupled w/ an A outfielder (dunn, abreu). i'm not so hot on a B + C (ie pierre + bradley, pierre + wilkerson).

I hear ya, but I'd be happy with Pierre - Wilkerson so long as we get a Washburn - Millwood and never have Neifi as a starter.

i don't think washburn's going to make me feel any better about the lack of offensive production in the OF. i don't think the cubs need to get another starter at this point.

Can we apply the formula used by Diffusion to "equalize" Wilk's OBP too? He has a 55% success rate. Last year he attepted 18 steals, and was successful 8 times. I would be interested to see what his poor success rate does to his numbers.

Sure.

Pierre's OBP numbers taking into account CS:

2000: .326 (51 games)

2001: .353

2002: .313

2003: .334

2004: .341

2005: .302

Career: .329

Wilkerson's OBP numbers taking into account CS:

2001: .296 (47 games)

2002: .357

2003: .363

2004: .365

2005: .336

Career: .352

As Lefty pointed out earlier, there's something of a question as to what a stolen base is worth relative to a total base. For now, let's run with the assumption that a stolen base is worth two thirds of a total base.

Pierre's SLG numbers taking into account SB:

2000: .343 (51 games)

2001: .465

2002: .396

2003: .438

2004: .451

2005: .412

Career: .427

Wilkerson's SLG numbers taking into account SB:

2001: .336 (47 games)

2002: .479

2003: .481

2004: .513

2005: .415

Career: .465

There simply isn't a case for Pierre being better than Wilkerson even when you take into account Wilkerson's poor basestealing.

What production did we have in CF last year? Did we upgrade? YES. What production did we have in RF last year, will we upgrade? YES. Did will totally whoop the Cards and Stros last year? YES. Did we loose to bad teams last year? YES. Making some changes, getting rid of a few players, and adding a few different guys to our core is going to bring some positive things next year. I have a good feeling, I'm sorry I just have a good feeling and that's as much as I can argue right there. I do think we need another pitcher though, you can't count on Wood and we need another strong starter to compliment Zambrono and Prior.

What kind of leadoff man needs SLG %? His job is to get on base regardless if its bunting, singles, or doubles. Sure I'd prefer doubles, but the guy gets on base.

Bottom line.

.248 batting average of leadoff hitters in 05.

Pierre is a monster upgrade.
