  1. So, its OK to almost end a guy's career or life with a slash or high stick, but make a few comments about sloppy 2nds and you are banned? Great to know. That's absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 1) Strawman 2) Prior records matter 3) The only time a guy's "career or life" was almost ended by a high stick/slashing incident was McSorely, and he never played in the NHL again, iirc.
  2. Wow. Those is an *incredible* pitcher/outfielder combo.
  3. I doubt it. Agreed. If Zambrano's performance on the mound was underperforming, his batting made up for it.
  4. "Myth" might be a better term than "fairy tale," but the implication is the same. Shortening up your swing might work in high school, but at the major-league level I have trouble believing many hitters are talented enough to have multiple productive swings.
  5. That's been my thought as well. The seats are going to mostly suck. The only good ones would be some small sections of the upper deck.
  6. If you want a dominant defense, you pretty much have to draft it every year. The attrition rate is quite high.
  7. Just a weird, weird season all around. Everyone convinced the team is bad, they win more than expected, lots of weird finishes, and now probably being eliminated with two games to go despite being 8-6. The only thing normal that happened was a QB injury.
  8. Combine the obsessive, narcissistic personality required to be excellent at anything with constant praise for aggressiveness and domination from an early age.
  9. What you missed in this equation is that walks are still valuable here. If you "shorten your swing" to make a little more contact, but you begin to make more outs, you've lowered your team's run scoring. If you take a walk, you may not have increased it as much as a base hit would have, but you've still improved the situation. So why use BA instead of OBP? Why intentionally ignore a large percentage of the plate appearances?
  10. It was a show of solidarity with me. I went curling for the first time last night. Was it fun? It was *hella* fun. Easier and harder than I expected. The whole sliding down the ice thing seems hard, but it's actually quite easy. But you have to maintain really good technique to have any prayer of directing the stone anywhere you might want it to go, and that's pretty tricky.
  11. That's broomball, a similar but slower sport.

  13. They keep score and declare a winner. There's no other reason needed to like anything.
  14. That is a pretty cool statistic I should say regulation losses. We have a crapload of OTLs. That makes it less cool. We're only .01 behind the Sharks for No. 1 in the league in GFA, and Kaner is tied for fourth in scoring.
  15. How about some wild theorizing? Hendry thinks he'll still get Peavy (and Bradley), and thinks Pie will be in that deal, so he needed Gathright for pinch running, double switches, etc. Time will tell about getting Peavy, but the acquisition of Gathright certainly means Pie is going somewhere in a trade. Is Pie out of options? Is there really anything in the Cubs' history to suggest they won't send him to AAA if he's not?
  16. The rules changed this year. The more people have heard of your players, the more wins you get. That's why we had to trade for Jake Peavy no matter the cost, and that's why Furcal would be worth so much. Big names = big wins.
  17. This team is really, really good at ice hockey.
  18. 9-2 :( I'm nervous now. Oilers' announcer: "and poulion gets Edmonton with a touchdown!"
  19. Yeah, the last 6 with Huet sucked. Khabibulin is a better goaltender than Huet. Winning despite that is nice, too, though.
  20. Not that Ladd didn't earn that, but sometimes it is just your night.
  21. Hawks behind only Stanley Cup champions-to-be San Jose Sharks in goals per game now.
  22. When did the NHL start doing an NFL-style audio explanation instead of just a hand signal?
  23. Clearly gloved it in, what's the rule on that? edit: You think it was shouldered? You've got that freaky HD thing, so you would be able to tell better than me.
