  1. I was following on yahoo and wondering if that was right.
  2. yes. it's the human condition.
  3. Okay, Tampa Bay lost. I know we still want Philly and Minnesota to lose, I think.
  4. Revisionist history. I said I was 85% sure I'd be back but that I'd consider quitting on them. And I did consider it (and I'm still considering it). But weren't you the poster who was saying he was emotionally detached from the playoffs before they even started? So why would you then quit on the Cubs? I'm confused. From what I recall you were not getting overly invested in the team's playoff results unless I misremember. I said I was trying to. Obviously, I failed miserably.
  5. Woo, saw they were down 0-1, had to do some work, came back to 2-1 lead. Lovin' it.
  6. Someone better than me can try to separate pitching and defense, but in the NL the best offense and the worst has been separated by about 200 runs, maybe a little more, on average the last few years.
  7. Detroit is losing to L.A. in the third. If that stands up and the Hawks can smack around the Canucks, that'd put them 3 points back of Detroit with a game in hand, more or less one game back. Crazy to even talk about catching Detroit, but here we are.
  8. Yep, but likely by the MLB and not directly by the BoSox. My understanding is sales from merchandise belongs to the MLB, not the specific teams, and the proceeds from all merchandise is split evenly among all teams. Really? I actually did not know that. So Boston got a percentage of all those L.A. Manny jerseys? IIRC, it depends on where they are sold. At the ballpark, the team keeps it. From a store or online, it's put into a fund spread equally among all teams.
  9. Dunn at No. 2 would be lovely.
  10. Five Blackhawks seems like a ton to me. I could almost see Toews or Keith being snubbed unfairly.
  11. That overtime goal last night is why people worried about Toews' goal totals should shut up.
  12. Not according to baseball-reference's version of pythagorean wins. It's close enough between the Rays and Blue Jays that which is second and third is irrelevant, anyways. There are four very good teams in that division and the Rays have no reason to think they are a step ahead of that pack.
  13. Lukewarm on Dunn. It's as if God wanted to see what the worst possible player with a good OBP could be.
  14. That difference would presumably be in their SLG.
  15. Revisionist history. I said I was 85% sure I'd be back but that I'd consider quitting on them. And I did consider it (and I'm still considering it). That's pathetic. Your opinion is duly noted.
  16. They were division champs so I don't see how they could be fairly classified as the third best team. Pythagorean wins.
  17. Being that they were only the third-best team in that division, and the fourth-best team has gotten significantly better, I'd say the Rays aren't really a lock for anything next year.
  18. Realistically, they weren't even the third best team in the division, the Blue Jays were better too. They failed utterly at the "fill out your roster with cheap, adequate players" part. Putting together a winning baseball team is still about more than how you spend your cash.
  19. You can certainly find players that can help your team, no? Whats getting lost in this semantics argument is that there are other ways to spend $27 mil per year than just to shore up one position even if it is by A-Rod standards. Yes and no. Spending money to improve your team isn't linear, because MLB baseball talent represents the far end of the bell curve. You really shouldn't have to spend much money to get roughly average players at every position. So once you've filled out your roster with a complement of cheap, adequate players, you have extra money to spend on exceptional players. One A-Rod is worth at least as much as one A-Ram and your standard $12 million player in that regard. If you have a bad team with a lot of gaping holes, then you are better of spreading the money around. But if you are a good team already, you are probably better off throwing it all at one concrete upgrade.
  20. Revisionist history. I said I was 85% sure I'd be back but that I'd consider quitting on them. And I did consider it (and I'm still considering it).
  21. He doesn't have to be to be worth the contract. Players are on a bell curve, and there's only so many slots you can put them in. You can't just buy three players who are 1/3 as good as A-Rod and get the same results, because you have to use up three slots to play them. Really? So, just for conversations sakes, you can't pay someone like Aramis $15 mil to play 3B and use $12M elsewhere to help your team? I understand the Yankees don't care and they won't be limited by his contract to address other needs, but it has to become more about the game and not just about a player. To that end, I applaud the Sox for passing on Teixeira if it's not on terms fair to both sides. If you are doing a good job managing your team so that you don't have any gaping holes anywhere, you probably won't be able to find a 20-run upgrade anywhere for $12 million to make up for the difference between Rodriguez and Ramirez.
  22. He doesn't have to be to be worth the contract. Players are on a bell curve, and there's only so many slots you can put them in. You can't just buy three players who are 1/3 as good as A-Rod and get the same results, because you have to use up three slots to play them.
  23. It's folly to try to predict who will and won't be a contender for eight years, and the odds of winning even if you are on a contender are pretty slim. I'll take the cash.
  24. Wow. Those is an *incredible* pitcher/outfielder combo. I really like the way you phrased that. *scrambles for excuse* It's a dialect thing.
  25. There are reasons the NHL isn't more popular, but that has *nothing* to do with it.
