  1. If we're going to play the false appeal to authority card, do you think Lou Piniella would agree with you that last year's team was destined to fail in the playoffs? Or, if we go into 2009 with the team as built, that it's doomed?
  2. The Blackhawks have scored 3.58 goals per game, second in the NHL, .01 behind Boston for the top spot. They are averaging 2.39 against per game, good for fourth in the NHL. Anything can happen with an inexperienced team in the playoffs, but this is a Cup contending team right now. Kane still on pace for 105 points, and unless I'm completely brainfarting that'd be the first Blackhawks 100-point season since Roenick. He's been much better defensively this season too, from what I've seen. He's not going to be physical, but he can play Gretzky-style defense of being in the right position to disrupt passing lanes and grab loose pucks.
  3. I guess if we absolutely had to name the winner, the Flyers guy got the better of it slightly, but it was awfully close. Wild without Gaborik tonight I read. Five points back of Detroit with two games in hand. With this team, I'd say that's the equivalent of 2 points back. So if we take care of business tonight, we could move into a functional tie by winning in Detroit. In the end, I just don't see us catching it, but I like the fact that's worth talking about.
  4. I dunno, seems pretty straight-forward to me ... If batters hit just beyond second base, there was no foul ground, and only 2 bases in baseball, that wouldn't look too weird aside from the specific names Throw in the pitcher doesn't have to throw strikes (but it's hard to get the batter out if you don't), the batter doesn't have to swing (but it's hard to score runs if you don't), and you can choose not to run on ground balls, and that's about it. Oh, and throw in the fact that, unlike baseball, strategy is actually important and the batsmen really do have a wide variety of swings they can employ (the bowling's a lot more varied to. I don't think baseball fans really think about how little the difference is between an 85 mph slider and a 92 mph fastball in terms of the actual path and velocity of the ball). I prefer baseball because I grew up with it, but objectively, cricket > baseball.
  5. Rick Sutcliffe and Jon Lieber, off the top of my head.
  6. Had to step out a minute. Nice to see the score match the reality.
  7. And there it is. Finally. Justice.
  8. Furcal conveniently combines excellent skills at the most important defensive position with better-than-average hitting relative to the other players at that position. Cherrypicking one of the few cases where it isn't true doesn't change that hitting is by far the most important part of a position player's value.
  9. They just made five whole minutes of even strength look like a power play. Toews and Kane are in a zone.
  10. Not a fight fan, but that one was good. Both guys stunned the other.
  11. Biron recovering nicely from those two early goals.
  12. I am pondering making an emotional investment in the Blackhawks again. I've never been a huge hockey fan but I enjoyed the teams of the early 90's with Roenick and Belfour. If nothing else, this team is fun. Very near the highest scoring in the league.
  13. Second power play looking much better than first. I love how unafraid to shoot Sharp is.
  14. Blackhawks steal 25 seconds of good 6-on-5 and darn near make it 3-0 on a delayed penalty. These guys look *awesome* on home ice and fresh legs.
  15. If this team is this hot when the playoffs come around, they are going deep. Really deep.
  16. Giveaway to Kane in the offensive zone, finds Sharp wide open in front of the net and Sharp shoots (get it) into the corner. 2-0 a couple minutes in
  17. Ladd makes it 1-0 exactly 3 seconds after I turn it on.
  18. but mostly from his injury, since looking at, say, derek lowe, roger clemens, tom glavine or greg maddux and saying "the guy is 33, he'll probably get hurt" would be really dumb. Survivor bias.
  19. Talent levels change quickly in the NFL. Just because a guy was a Pro Bowler a few seasons ago doesn't mean he has a thing left in the tank now, and half the guys you listed don't. Football is a game that attrites talent incredibly quickly. This team is pretty thin on talent, and bad teams are capable of winning 10 games in the NFL on luck alone, let alone coaching.
  20. You could have predicted it just from the fact that he's a 33-year-old pitcher.
  21. How many teams have been left muttering in recent years about how they would have had the Bears if not for some special teams play?
  22. And that is primarily because he never tries the harder kicks, which would lower his percentage as they lower everybody else's. I have trouble believing that's "primarily" the reason he's got one of the best FG%s in history despite kicking in one of the worst fields for FG%.
  23. An AP story this morning says that Dempster's 4/32 is the biggest non-Yankee free agent contract of the offseason to date.
  24. Technically, I think there is a limit, and the Yankees have reached it, of 3 type A free agents.
