  1. Acquiring a perennial Cy Young candidate for a guy in A ball with wrist problems and a utility man with a career 97 OPS + is a no-brainer. See what I did there? Used an analogous but incorrect argument? yes, we all saw it. Lol. There was nothing incorrect about my argument, just as there was nothing incorrect about yours, sir. You can participate in and add to a constructive discussion, or you can spin things in an attempt to validate your point of view. You simply choose the latter. Then you berate another (RyneDawson) for doing the same. I was simply trying to illustrate that. The fact that there are two arguments proves that it's not a "no-brainer." There aren't two halves of possibility with "brainer" and "no-brainer" occupying equal halves. And I didn't berate anyone.

  3. Yes, you are correct. This argument can and should be extended to say that it's almost never a good idea to commit big money long-term to a starting pitcher.
  4. Rumors of arm troubles? What are you talking about, just because he was on the DL last year doesn't mean he has arm troubles. The guys has pitched over 200 innings how many years? If he had a record like Harden than i would understand but i feel an argument like this is weak. I mean if you want to go there, you can say Vitters has Wrist Troubles cause he has had a record with his wrist. Yes, you can and should mention Vitters' wrist. Yes, going on the DL means arm problems. They didn't put him there to clear up a roster spot for Josh Banks. And the fact that Peavy's had so many consecutive seasons of big innings should make you more wary, not less.
  5. He's worth about 3 more wins than Marquis for 2009, which could easily be made up by getting a real RFer via FA. So there's no need to commit long-term large money to a starting pitcher (rarely a good idea), let alone the prospects as well. And this is easily the best team in the division with only one of those upgrades, no need to do both. If you honestly believe that Peavy is worth 3 more wins than Marquis in 2009, I have some property to sell you. Don't insult someone for analysis and then try to argue that Peavy is barely more valuable than Marquis. 30 runs difference in VORP in 2008 in thoroughly ordinary seasons for both of them. Three wins isn't "barely," three wins is a lot.
  6. No need to call him a troll. He's posting legitimate arguments about a Chicago Cubs transaction in the clearly marked thread. He's wrong, but he's not a troll.

  8. There was about 48 hours in this thread where everything reporting a done deal was praised as a good source and anything reporting problems was ripped as a stupid source. It was funny.
  9. I was pretty tepid on the deal all along, because I did, you know...actaul analysis.
  10. Committing $72 million to a pitcher with rumors of arm problems in exchange for your top prospect and the third-best 2b in the league last year is not a no-brainer.
  11. my bad you are right peavy is worth a million more wins than marquis
  12. Peavy's worth about 3 wins over Marquis. With the gaping hole in the outfield, there's a three-win improvement to be had that doesn't involve giving away a great prospect and committing yourself to a big four-year deal on a starting pitcher (rarely a good idea). I'm not disappointed. Maybe we can stop hearing the repeated brilliant analysis of "It's jake peavy!" as if there's some MLB rule that says teams with guys named "Jake Peavy" advance straight to the NLCS.
  13. In related news, MLB announces that the Kansas City franchise used a spy in the commissioner's office to uncover plans to replace extra innings with a "hardest pitch" competition.
  14. Hey guys, missed the game. Judging from the box score, I'm confused. They didn't get up too many goals, so I would guess that Khabibulin is healthy and they are hiding it from the league by having him wear Huet's jersey. But Khabi can't get shutouts, he would have let one in late. So what gives?
  15. Special teams isn't a problem anymore. Did you miss where I said our latest kicker is 11-11? They've also had a kick blocked, which is never good.
  16. If special teams is a problem for them, as it seems to be, then that's even better for the Bears.
  17. I'm pretty sure they would have liked to not signed Kevin Brown or Carl Pavano knowing what they know now. And they didn't sign Kevin Brown. In this time stream.
  18. I think Fontenot plus a right-handed platoon complement pretty much balances out what we can expect from DeRosa
  19. Well, Gammons seems to be wrong about 100% of the time too. Except when he's predicting the Dodgers to beat the Cubs in the first round of the playoffs :( But did he predict an epic beatdown sweep? Nostrodamus he aint...
  20. Kinda like Oakland? Hudson,Mulder,Harden,Haren, etc... Stupid Billy Beane, preemptively stealing my ideas...
  21. After looking at Peavy and now Lowe's contract, I think if I were building a ballclub from scratch, I'd just build an obscene pitcher's park and sell high trading pitchers year after year after year.
  22. Yankees will regret that contract much sooner than later. Nice to see they haven't learned. I still say the Red Sox and Blue Jays are the playoff teams in that division. I wonder if the Brewers front office is feeling like they are waking up from a bender and hoping what they remember isn't true: Did we really give away *that* much for a rental on a playoff spot?
  23. that's a steal definitely...and we still hold onto Pie and Marshall...though I'd probably want Pie and Dero and Marquis rather than Vitters...But Jim get it done! It's the sort of deal that should remind teams not to be so eager to give out no-trade clauses, because situations change and the player then owns the trade.
