  1. I think the bigger issue with payroll is the Cubs ability to get back under the LT in 25’ more so than what they spend in 24’. That is why Glasnow and his salary doesn’t concern me. In 25’ Horton takes his spot. Maybe Ben Brown. Maybe Ohtani. In 25’ they have $50M+ coming off and all pretty much easily replaceable players or even dead money. Basically they lose Hendricks and Gomes. One ca be replaced internally and the other with a cheaper contract for a back up catcher. One year of over the LT isn’t going to hurt them. But to me the real goal is to be back under in 25’.
  2. I don’t think it is a hard decision at all. Cubs have a lot of similar middle relief/lonf relief/spot starters. I wouldn’t think twice about moving Wesnecki. They can have Thompson too(another easily replaced pitcher)
  3. I hope they do more than that. I agree with the part on the one year pitcher. That is why I mention Glasnow. I think there is no way they get Burnes. And if they get Ohtani and Glasnow/Beiber and stop, I wouldn’t be happy. I want another pitcher and another bat.
  4. What what about Wesnicki?
  5. The problem with the long term contract is “if” they signed Ohtani or traded for Soto and extended him and then paid a pitcher $25M for 5 to 9 years they would have some real problems with their payroll for years. I think what makes Glasnow or other guys on their last year of a deal more interesting is the Cubs don’t have to tie up their payroll for years. And if Ohtani was signed he could just takes Glasnow’s space in 25’. Sure I would rather just sign Yamamoto, but Ricketts isn’t going to always be over the LT.
  6. I don’t necessarily like Glasnow a lot. All I am saying is you can’t say you are ok with trading for him and then say you would only offer terrible players for him. Just say you don’t want him. As for payroll, I already explained it would be a one year one off. They are losing around $50M from payroll in 25’ and the only real loss they are needing to replace is Hendricks. If they traded for Glasnow, and even went to $280M in payroll this year, besides the $50M coming off next year would also be Glasnow at $25M. So they would be under the first LT by $30M. And wouldn’t need to replace much. All I have to consider when thinking of Glasnow is will he help them next year. And IMO if he is healthy he will. Is he better than Wesnecki and Thompson next year? Again I would say yes. That said, I am fine with other moves instead. I also wouldn’t give up top prospects for Glasnow. But IMO the fact he only has one year is a plus for the Cubs. Keeps prospect cost down and they can get out of his deal in one year.
  7. So again. We aren’t getting him then. It not just the Cubs they are trading with. I don’t understand your worry about money. If he pitches well who cares what he makes? If he cost Wesnecki and Thompson, who cares. Is he better than those guys? Yes. Are those guys even sure things to be in the team in 25? No! So if he helps you win next year and then in 25’ either Horton takes his spot, or if they sign Ohtani, he takes his spot, who really cares about the payroll in 24’? No, I wouldn’t give up a top prospect. I wouldn’t give up Morel. But the Xubs have a lot of redundant arms they can move. And if he pitches close to as a starter who is TOR quality, I really am not all all concerned about 24’s payroll.
  8. I don’t think his salary lessens the chance of Soto or Ohtani. They are going to go over in 24 anyway. If anything, him coming now makes perfect sense if they also get Ohtani. Gkasnow pitches in 24’ and then Ohtani takes his spot in 25’ and his salary drops off. Same can be said for Bierber.
  9. That fine. I understand people not wanting him. And they aren’t going to get him for a terrible prospect.
  10. So what you are saying is you don’t want him. They aren’t getting him for a terrible prospect. BTW, what do you think he is worth? Why is money so important if they are only going to have him for one year? If he is healthy he is a very good pitcher. And a type they don’t have now. Someone who misses bats. What does he have to do to be “worth $25M?
  11. So directed at me. That is fine. I also find it tiring that everyone assumes he won’t do it. As 1908 said let’s wait and see. But of course it can’t be left at that, or this would have never been posted.
  12. Well if he is traded I think that would mean he couldn’t play 3rd. So we will know. And if one of us is wrong I think we can agree it would be better if you are wrong😀
  13. Another quote from the Cubs was “we know he can play 2nd and 3rd” . In fact that was said right before he said he wanted him to play 1st. So we shall see.
  14. Speaking of Morel, did you notice he played 3rd in the DR the other day. Wonder if the Cubs told them to play him there? Until the Cubs close the door on him at 3rd I am not giving up the hope they play him there.
  15. Honestly a good FO would have plan be ready to go if Ohtani went elsewhere. I would guess the pivot won’t be that long if they don’t get him. Maybe Soto, Bichette, Alonso, Glasnow, etc….. Maybe something we never saw coming. I think once Ohtani is settled the Cubs will move quickly. And I hope it is this week.
  16. Probably true. Maybe a small deal can be done by the Cubs, but I doubt they do much until Otani is settled.
  17. Assad Or Wesnecki.
  18. Or Vegas know people from Chicago bet the Cubs!
  19. TBF you are always way low in what you think a player will get. This has been the case for years at PSD. And, actually Maeda got exactly what fangraphs predicted. The numbers you are suggesting are again, way too low. I do get the second year was something that may have been avoided. But the $12M annual is in line, and if they had to add a second to get him, it isn’t that bad a contract. He wasn’t going to sign for 2/14.
  20. I just see those #4/#5 pitchers all around that $10M to $13M a year. I guess the second year is a bit much. But nothing crazy or totally unexpected to me.
  21. What do you think Maeda or guys like him should be making? I just assumed that was what he would get.
  22. I agree they should spend this year. But where are you getting $75M off the books after next year?
  23. I agree that Sutcliffe knows the game. He is good at that sort of stuff. But he is too much of a homer. Everyone is great on the cubs if you are to believe him. That is my issue with him. I love JD. Boog is fine as far as I am concerned.
  24. If they did sign Ohtani I can see them going after Glasnow. He pitches next year at $25m but comes off the books the next year. Ohtani can take his spot in the rotation. They can sign someone like Hoskins too, next year. He falls off in 25 as well. They have a lot of options. Even signing or trading for guys who don’t come off next year, they still have Hendricks, Mancini, Gomes, Barhardt and Smyly all coming off in 25, and really the only one they would have to replace is Hendricks. If Amaya can prove to be a decent catcher they can sign a back up cheap. Lots of money coming off that can be replaced cheaply. Horton can take Hendricks spot.
  25. My point was similar to what you are saying. No one ruined Castro. He was never a great hitter. People exaggerate his ability when he came up. He was fine. He was an ok player. And regardless of how he did it year after year, his end numbers were pretty similar his whole career. Maybe he did pull the ball more as he got older. Maybe he did adjust to do what “the hitting gurus” wanted him to do. The fact is his entire career he was basically around an average hitter. No one ruined him. Started right around 100ops+, got to 117 one year but ended up right around 100 for a career.
