  1. Maybe. But I don’t recall that happening much either. And, again, maybe they didn’t want to. Maybe making the blue jays come back to Chicago during a road trip is exactly what the Cubs hoped would happen. Add the fact they miss Cease and that is another win.
  2. Which is why even with all the bitching about this team, it is a contender. Get some pitching, hitters hit like they are supposed to hit and they can beat anyone. Maybe not over 162 games, but in a 3,5 or 7 game series, they can win. Which is why it drives me crazy when someone suggests they are not contenders. If you make the playoffs and/or win 87-90 games you are a contender. No, your not at the Dodgers talent. Maybe not even Brewers or Braves. But I don’t have to be. You just have to make the playoffs and beat them in a short series.
  3. BK asked why they didn’t plan for this. I think they did. The plan was if the rain cancels the game they get a day to rest and make it up at the end of a homestand. Make Toronto inconvenienced.
  4. Aside from hurricane warnings on the east coast I don’t remember when a game would be called and played a day before it was supposed to be played. Maybe it has been done some, but pretty rare. Besides that, they would have had to make Saturday a day night doubleheader. I think Wrigley still has some restrictions on the amount of night games they could have. They might be at that limit. Logistically getting people out after one game and in for the night game would be tough. And notifying people who have tickets for today’s game wouldn’t be easy either. Not to mention people who were going to Sunday’s game now needing to go Saturday night. I think they did have a good idea this game wouldn’t be played and are satisfied with making it up 8/6.
  5. Maybe the Cubs are copying the Dodgers in holding pitchers back so they are fresh in August thru the rest of the year. 😬Maybe Steele, Boyd and Wiggins give the Cubs the starting pitching they need closing out the season. For the record, I know that isn’t what they are doing intentionally. And I know that isn’t going to happen. Just putting a positive, albeit, doubtful spin on the season. 🤷
  6. This is so very true. He is the perfect player for Yankee stadium. In Chicago, my bet is his numbers would be worse than Happ’s. And we all know how much Happ is loved here. EDIT: based on his road splits .197/.300/.293 he would be unplayable for the Cubs. That is Dansby territory.
  7. I just wish some fans would take a beat before posting nonsensical stuff. But I get the passion.
  8. I disagree. I don’t think any of those moves were egregious bad. Sure, Maton might have been a stretch, but the fact is he has to be good or the Cubs are screwed anyway. As for Rolison pitching the 7th, I understand your concern. But had Rolison stayed in and pitched and given up runs Counsell would have been blasted for letting him pitch the 7th. Thornton has been pretty good. And is right handed. I am not saying you are wrong to suggest Rokison staying in. I am saying whatever he did, if it didn’t work people would suggest he did something else. I do appreciate your explanation and it has merit. But I think it is one of those things that it doesn’t work it is criticized. At least you have r spanning behind your comment.
  9. Without the advantage of hindsight, what obvious mistakes did Counsell make with the pen this week? Rolison came in and did his job. Blue Jays had some right handed bats coming up in the 7th. So he put a guy in who has been very good prior to this game, and rough on righties. Era under 2. Then when lefties came up he brought in Theilbar. I mean that is the pen he was given. Even bringing Webb in, he has been his best. Easy to say he should have done something different after the fact. Keep in mind, my streaming was lost in that 8th inning implosion. So I didn’t see the entire inning. Just bits and pieces. So while I am somewhat skeptical of your comment about obvious bad moves, I have to say I don’t know the 8th inning sequence. I got my streaming back just as Webb gave up the 3 run homer.
  10. I agree he doesn’t slump like this. But when looking at all his underlying numbers this year versus his career, nothing jumps off the page negatively. He is pretty close in EV, pull rate, hard hit rate, etc…. The one thing that’s well off is his BABIP. It is .245. His career BABIP is more like.300+. So it is possible he is just really hitting in bad luck. Not hitting great, but a .240 BA is probably about 30 points lower than what it should be.
  11. Phillies have been good for years because they have had 3 horses in their rotation for years. Every year they have had at least 3 of guys like Nola, Sanchez, Wheeler, Suarez and Luzardo in their rotation. And, despite poor defense behind them, they kept runs of the board. It wasn’t the offense that drove them. Stop framing the discussion into me not wanting to add a bat to the line up. Obviously if they could get Alvarez that is a huge boost. But they can’t. Nor could they get Abrams. The discussion is what helps the team more, a stud bat or a stud pitcher. I think it is obvious to most people a pitcher is the biggest need. I would go as far as saying they need 3 pitchers before even concerning themselves with a bat. Players on the current roster could solve whatever problem you seem to have with this line up, provided they play back to their norm. The pitching staff cannot fix itself. The Cubs aren’t just an average to a little above average team because their offense fails them. They are where they are because their staff is bad, whether it be because of injuries or just plain lack of talent. That is just the fact. Pitching is where they need to get better.
  12. I brought up the Phillies because they clearly have 3 guys they paid for their bat in their everyday line up. You have consistently said teams need at least 2 so that they will score a lot of runs. The Phillies are a perfect example of the opposite of what you are saying. Even with those bats they paid for who are “star” bats they score less than the Cubs. Cubs have a better line up. And this lineup is absolutely good enough to win the WS. And if it isn’t, no line up is good enough to compete with the Dodgers. Cubs have probably a top 8 line up in the game. And a bottom 8 pitching staff. Seems clear to most people, with the exception of you, that adding pitching is by far the biggest need for this team. BTW, nice job moving the goal posts in this discussion. No one ever talked about being as good as the Dodgers. The conversation is about what helps the Cubs more. But since you moved the goal post to being better than the Dodgers, even if they added Alvarez, they wouldn’t be better than them Their staff would still be 25th in baseball.
  13. Exactly. If the Cubs hit like they are supposed to they have a good line up and will score a lot of runs.
  14. Where is this large sample size to prove the a Phillies have a more talented line up than the Cubs? Is it the entire 2025 season where the Cubs outscored the Phillies? Nope, that can’t be it. Is it this year where the Cubs have outscored the Phillies by 50+ runs? That doesn’t seem right either. So where is the proof their line up is better because the “stars” they have? For the record, I would take the Cubs starting 9 over then Phillies any day. And they have proven to be better.
  15. Maybe they would have went to the WS. But if they did it would have been more because of their pitching than their offense, with 3 “star” bat first players in the line up. Hell, last year they even paid Castellanos $20M a year. That was for his bat, not his defense. And with all that money spent on bat first players, they scored less runs than the Cubs and Brewers, who basically have no bat first, star, players. Their staff, with a poor defense behind them, lead them. Not the players paid to slug.
  16. I just looked at runs scored by the Phillies compared to the Cubs. Phillies have scored 308 runs compared to 360 by the Cubs. And the Phillies have 2 guys paid for their star bats (Schwarber and Harper) This was supposed to be what a team needed to be slump proof, according to Peanut Punch. And if you add Turner he was another guy paid for his bat, when the Cubs signed Swanson for his glove. Phillies paying much more for Turner who has produced less WAR that Swanson since the signing. And the Phillies have him much longer. With all that offensive firepower they paid for, while neglecting defense, somehow they are scoring 2/3 or a run per game less than the Cubs. They are hanging in because of Wheeler and Sanchez. Two star pitchers. Which is exactly what the Cubs need. They clearly have enough offense. Much better than the offense the Phillies paid a lot of money to have.
  17. It would surprise me if they canceled Sunday to play a doubleheader tomorrow. Maybe it isn’t unprecedented, but I don’t recall it happening with the possible exception of hurricanes in the East.
  18. In that same interview Coomer also said the Brewers have fallen off since last year and it could be expected since they lost Adames this past off season. Either is accurate. So not sure exactly if Coomer knows what he is talking about.
  19. Does look pretty bad. But I can’t remember a time a game was changed to a doubleheader before the actual game was to take place.
  20. Since Detmer is being talked about, why not Soriano. I wanted him last year. I thought Shaw for him then sign Willie Castro to do the job Shaw is doing was move the Cubs should have made. So far it is looking like that would have worked just fine.
  21. We are just not going to agree. I see a Cubs team 6th in fWAR offensively even with poor play from Bregman, Hoerner and Swanson and think if they play as they should the Cubs would be a top 5 offense in baseball. I also see a team who staff is in the bottom 20% in baseball without anyone really expected to be that good. So I see an extreme need for pitching. You seem to think Alvarez is needed to be a top 5 offense and who cares if the pitching sucks. Does that sum it up or am I wrong?
  22. So assuming Alvarez is this good, the comp from a pitcher side would be Skeenes. So do you still take Alvarez?
  23. Let’s leave names out of it, because like you said, who knows who is available and at what cost. So keeping it as simple as possible I would rather the Cubs acquire an all star starting pitcher over an all star bat. If everything else is equal, ie: years of control, contract, cost to acquire etc…, the pitcher makes more sense and helps the Cubs more.
