I would agree. It is either now or never with him. TBH, even a decent start might not save him if the Cubs can actually get some pitching help at the TDL. You have Boyd, Shota and Cabrera coming back soon. Add a starting pitcher and that leaves 1 spot, for now. Depending on who the Cubs are facing, I might rather have Peterson over Taillion. And that doesn’t even include Rea or if Brown comes back. -
Yep, probably went a little too far with suggesting Shaw has more value. Should have just stuck with equal. Probably more for some teams, less for others, putting him basically equal.

I would say Shaw is just as valuable and probably more so than Mead. Shaw plays solid defense everywhere you put him and until this little breakout by Mead, was better offensively. Career wise they are very similar, and that is counting this years breakout by Mead. Shaw is also a year younger. Both were top prospects at one point. With Early injured, as well as Shaw, I don’t see this to be something either team would do. Cubs need a pitcher now. But I do think Shaw is more valuable than Mead.

Mead was a top prospect at one time. He struggled a few times when he came up but does have some potential. Nationals dealt him at his peak. Something the Cubs should do with Ayers. Take advantage of an unexpected breakout and get something for him while teams want him.

I am really conflicted with Skubal. I know he is great but to lose what they will have to lose for 1/3 of a year when they aren’t the favorite to win, even if they have him, is hard for me to accept. He might end up pitching 1 meaningful game for them. -
It is going to cost to get someone good. So if this is something you wouldn’t do you then can’t be someone who complains when Jed doesn’t do anything or only makes small moves. I don’t view Ayers and Rojas as near the same prospect. I think people are way higher on Ayers then he deserves. He is 25 years old and not an early draft choice. Cubs should take advantage of what very well could be a fluke season he will never come close to having again. Rojas would hurt. But to get value you have to give value up. Probably even have to overpay. More buyers than sellers.

I suspect my answer is not going to be popular, but I say “yes”. Have to give up something to get something. Detmers could make the difference beteeen a long playoff run and losing in rd 1. And then we have him at least a few more years after this.

I agree with you on Brown. I feel he is that guy they use only when it really matters. If the Cubs are a clear wild card team but can’t realistically catch the Brewers I would guess you see him in multi innings relief the last 2 weeks of the season, every few days to get work in. If the gap is closer and they can catch the Brewers you might see him earlier and in more important spots. Not just getting work in to be ready for the playoffs. They just need him healthy for whatever time key games are played. -
They are also very bad against left handed pitching. Detmers would be the perfect guy to get for that series. Boyd, Detmers and Shota would cause problems for the Phillies. I also believe the Cubs hit Sanchez pretty hard earlier this year and he wears down late in the season. So I wouldn’t be so sure the Cubs can’t beat the Phillies.

I don’t think it will happen either. I am just saying if the Angels really liked Ayers and they would trade Detmers for him I would do it. Same with Shaw/Hancock. Next year they would have Brown, Detmers, Cabrera, Steele, Hancock. Then maybe Boyd stays for a year. They may also have Wiggins coming and Horton back. Maybe they wouldn’t have to get a FA starter so they can sign Seiya again.

I also think recency bias is why all of a sudden people don’t want to trade Ayers but are all willing to trade Mo. If the Angels want Ayers and not Mo, trade Ayers. I have no issue with that. I also have no issue if Mo is the guy traded. I just glad Ayers is peaking now giving the cubs another asset to trade. If they came out of this deadline with Hancock for Shaw+, Detmers for Ayers+ and Alcantara for a pen arm (and all the + players were not top 15 in the system) I would consider the TDL a huge win. And they would have a good rotation in place for next year.

If the Angels would do a Detmers deal with Ayers as the main piece in the deal from the Cubs I wouldn’t say a word about it later. I would make that deal before they changed their mind. Ayers is sound money. Spend it!!!!

Shaw is definitely too much. But I don’t think Alcantara is too little. Or at least close enough to only have to add a small piece. I wouldn’t be thrilled with Wacha, but he might be the best they can get.

I would drive him to the airport. This is the problem with fans. The idea of selling high on someone sounds good until it can actually happen and then no one wants to trade a guy doing well. I wouldn’t think twice about trading Ayers for a controlled pitcher.

I meant people here talking about it. I agree they aren’t trading him and should not trade him. I would trade Shaw and a lower prospect for Hancock and Ayers and Assad for Detmers. Then see about dealing Alcantara for the best pen arm they can get. That would be a crazy good TDL IMO. It would help now and give them the makings of a good rotation for the next few years.

Who has suggested trading Seiya. I think everyone has said for Shaw that is fine. But not for Seiya.

My thoughts exactly. Then do Ayers + for Detmers. That would be amazing. Then get a pen arm. As others have said, Ayers is sound money.

I also would rather see Alcantara as a 2nd piece of a bigger deal. But IMO he has to go this deadline. And if the best I could do for him is Wacha, I think I would do it. I actually think Wacha has another year after this one if the team wants him.

I would gladly take him back on a 3 year $75M deal. Something like that. Have to hope he only wants to play a few more and then go back to Japan. I would love to have him back.

Wouldn’t the Mariners talk about Hancock be an easier discussion if Shaw was healthy? I had suggested once before that Shaw being out MIGHT make some talks trickier. Wouldn’t this be an example. If the Mariners wanted Shaw they would want to know he can help this year. If they wanted Seiya,(which I hope the Cubs wouldn’t give up) wouldn’t it be easier to trade him if the Cubs knew Shaw was good to go? I can also see the Guardians wanting to discuss a young pitcher for Shaw. That would be another example. Maybe even the Red Sox.

Hancock would be a good get. Not for Seiya, but I would be fine with either or both of the other two.

Why not get someone now so you don’t have to do this every damn year? I mean if they could get a rental right now and they like a deal at this point, I agree, why hold out for the guy with control left. But there is nothing to suggest they have any deal lined up if any kind and are slowing the process because they are hoping for someone they can have for 2 or 3 years after this one. If they really could get Gausman for two prospects outside top 10 in the system, yes, get him. But I don’t think that is real. I just hate that every year we go through the same thing. And if the Cubs aren’t close enough Jed won’t get a high end guy. If he bites the bullet this year and trades for a guy with years left, maybe we don’t always have to do this. Next year there will be other prospects. There always are.

I agree. I don’t see the Brewers Changing what they have done for years, now. Last year they were in a similar position and didn’t make any major moves. I doubt they do this year.
