  1. I wouldn’t do that. How much does he get if he was healthy? I think that is close to what he would get had he not missed all of last year. I would rather a 1 year deal.
  2. As long as this is a Bellinger type deal and not the big off season move, I would be ok with him.
  3. I think I responded to the wrong post. Maybe I was drunk. My bad.
  4. I don’t think Candelario should block anyone either. But with first base, 3rd base and DH all available I doubt be blocks anyone. Now, your point on not wanting him is a different topic. As I said, I only see him as an ok player. I would be ok with 3/$40M. But I am also fine if they stayed away. There are other options. And I do think someone will give him more than I would want the Cubs to give him.
  5. Shaw is just the next great prospect. When the time comes for him to come up people will be finding fault with him too. You don’t leave spaces open for guys I don’t love Candelario. And I would be fine not getting him. But as long as the Cubs or whoever does sign him value him as an ok starter he can be signed to a reasonable contract. I am not, in any way, advocating the Cubs should sign him. I am just saying he is an ok/decent player. And if the ins did sign him he better be their 4th biggest acquisition (via FA or trade) of the off season. He can’t be a main signing. That is what I mean by he is ok if valued correctly.
  6. Hesitant to do what? Offer a 3 year deal? I think he will get that. For the right price as long as you realize he is what he is, he is an ok signing. #6 hitter in a solid line up and preferrably a 3rd baseman. He is fine for maybe 3/$40M.
  7. Has to be 1 for me. Even if, for the sake of the discussion, Soto signed a long term deal, I would still chose 1 as long as Ohtani was here at least 4 years before opt outs kicked in. And even if Hoskins replaced Candelario or Turner it would still be one. Another thing against 2 is Soto would cost more than Alonso in a trade. So you lose more assets too. That said, an off season of Yamamoto, Soto and Hoskins would not be disappointing.
  8. Just my opinion, but I think Happ is less likely to be at 3rd than Morel is. Not often does a guy go from an easier position to a harder one. Usually the other way around. Most recent examples are Bryant and Braun. Happ has been in the OF too long and really, even when he did play the infield it wasn’t 3rd. Maybe he can play 1st.
  9. Maybe the Cubs asked them to play him at 3rd…… Personally I think way too much was made out of him getting work at 1st. I think that is fine. But unlike most, I did not let that lead me to deciding the Cubs gave up on him playing 3rd. I still think once winter ball is over he will be worked at 3rd by Cubs coaches. For me, that is his best option. And if he can’t do it they will need to move him, IMO.
  10. I think he has proven he can’t play center to the same level he has proven he can’t play 3rd. So I guess they want to try 1st.
  11. Darvish has been more valuable to the Cubs since he was traded than he was as a Cub.
  12. Yeah, I don’t buy the report either. I think Soto is traded this off season. If the Padres have to cut payroll they can’t keep him to the deadline to see how they are doing. They need to cut payroll. What happens if they are in the race and still have to cut payroll? How do they trade him then. I agree with 1908. He will be traded this off season until they prove he is not.
  13. While I think it can help if you have him on the team in 24’ I think I’m the end he will take the most money. There is a slim chance he comes here and loves it so he gives a SLIGHT dissonant. Or maybe an offer is made so good he decides not to bother with the FA process. But I would say that is, at best, a 5% chance.
  14. I think if they did this they would add one more pitcher too. And either Morel would have to have proven himself to be able to play 3rd or they would have to also trade him for a 3rd baseman. But if they did just what you said I would call that a pretty good off season.
  15. I understand what you are saying, but then there is always this: From Jed regarding Morel: It’s an ongoing conversation, but we’ve talked a lot about finding him a home and I do think we wanna give him some work at first and see how he reacts to that,” Hoyer said. “I mean he’s shown he can play third, he can play second, he can play in the outfield, but finding a home for him is something that would be really valuable …. So here he is saying he has shown he can play 3rd….. Now he didn’t say he can play it well. I get that. But maybe that is what spring is for. As for Mervis, I agree with you. It appears the Cubs so not believe in him.
  16. Exactly. Same as every team. What is his value for 1 year, period. That is the return the Padres deserve.
  17. I agree that PCA has work to do. However before he came up talking about trading him was not done. Most love the newest guy coming. Until he gets here. Right now Horton is the guy. Shaw is also somekne people are living now. Maybe it is prospect fatigue. After a bit of time fans start to get tired of waiting in a guy so they go to the next guy. Again, the new shiney toy.
  18. While I pretty much agree with you, if the DR team had a guy or guys they were playing at 3rd regularly that may not have been an option for them. So with the Cubs blessings they put him at first. Maybe there was not an opportunity for him to play 3rd. So first is a new opportunity. Maybe the Cubs have someone specifically in mind to work with him at 3rd. So they do that after the winter league. While not getting time at 3rd now is not ideal, I don’t think that closes the books on that idea.
  19. If you are saying you would rather go the next 10 years with Soto as the main core player than hope PCA can amount to a core player and be that main guy, I 100% agree with you.
  20. Which is why guys like PCA and Horton shouldn’t even be discussed.
  21. I think more than 1 thing can be true. People can love Ross for his Cubs history, think he was an ok manager and still like the move to Counsell. Basically that is where I am. I think he took too much heat for every move he made that didn’t work. But overall I thought he was fine. I just think Counsell is better. I also think his way of managing aligns more with Hoyer. I also feel by signing Counsell they have made a statement that 24’ matters. I think with Counsell as the manager they Cubs will be more aggressive in the off season.
  22. If they are going to trade him I hope it is for a young controlled pitcher. I would be fine with for Soto too, but they better then sign him long term. Not interested in Morel for 1 year of Alonso and not sure I would want to sign Alonso to a deal over the time he is looking for.
  23. But when talking a trade with SD Soto has to be considered a 1 year rental. That is the value the Padres should expect back. And a top 15 prospect in the game shoukd not be traded for one year and a $33M contract. I get the PCA concern. But if they are going to trade PCA I would rather it be for a young controlled starting pitcher they can have for 4 years or more. Sign Bellinger and deal PC for a pitcher. Keep in mind, I would love Soto. But that is too high a price for him. They don’t need to give PCA for him.
  24. I realize Burger is not a very good fielder, but depending on what the Marlins wanted for him, I wouldn’t mind him at 3rd. With GG in the middle the Cubs might be able to slack off on defense a little at 3rd. He would give them a lot of power from 3rd. Others in a trade would be Torres, if he agreed to move to third or Polanco if he moved to 3rd(or is he a FA?)
