  1. Um, hello, Neifi & Bynum? If Bowden is willing to sign Christian Guzman to a four-year deal, he'd practically hump Hendry's leg for a shot at those two. :)
  2. The wheel of excuses turn and turn when it stops, the blame we learn Dusty Baker Wrote: Whoever had "Blame the kids" wins the pool. Everyone else is a loser. Let me get this straight: in 2003 Dusty won with two starters who were both 22 and several relievers who were considered "young." Hee Sop played regularly (at the beginning) and was considered "young." So it wasn't a problem then, was it? And can someone PLEASE explain to me how we were a young team last year? I hate Dusty. I hate his excuses. I hate how the minute you put ONE player younger than 55 on his roster, the team is officially young. Need help packing? I'm your man.
  3. He talked about possibly being traded to Detroit, which would really bring things full circle for him. John Kruk also brought it up during last night's BBTN. Smoltz should have the option to go wherever he wants to finish his career. He's earned it.
  4. Granted we have a lead-off man currently that is beyond terrible, but how loud would the cries be if Furcal's .249/.329/.335 was in the number one spot? Would we be talking about how he's not living up to his salary? I'm glad we didn't get Furcal for every reason other than it would have kept D Lee in the lineup.
  5. This term rankles me more than any other in describing Dusty. He was allowed ample opportunities to play mediocre veterans in San Francisco because of the giant shadow cast by Barry Bonds. You put a pre-2003 Barry in our lineup and it improves exponetially. However when you don't have one of the greatest players in history to fall back on and cover any mistakes you make as a manager, this is what you're left with. Personally, I'm surprised it's only six players that are disgruntled with Dusty. I would thought it was the entire pitching staff at the very least (minus Rusch).
  6. Okay, so let's go through the reasons why Buerhle isn't being held back from being the best pitcher known to man: - scoreboard at Arlington tipping his pitches - Greg Maddux throwing spitballs - Questec pinching him on the corners Is there anything else he can whine about? Seriously, it's always everyone else's fault but himself.
  7. None have a working knowledge of what's actually happening around baseball?
  8. I'd be willing to wager my ex-wife for sure. I'll even pay for transport!
  9. If it's such a big deal, the Giants should give him some chin music today, and the Mets shouldn't retaliate. Keep it between the players, not the media.
  10. Nice article on Greenberg on the front page of today's Tribune. Here's hoping he catches on somewhere else! http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060605downey,1,5269525.column?coll=chi-news-hed
  11. hey, leave the geese out of this! Yeah, leave them the flock out of it. Stop it...you're making me gaggle. I think you all need to stop. Seriously, one is worse than the next. [-X Pedro's right. I'm really getting honked off.
  12. I personally would like to apologize to Zambrano for breaking up his no-no. I was at home watching the game, doing everything in my power just to concentrate on what I was watching. In the eighth inning, right after he walked Lamb, I picked up a magazine because I needed something to distract me. It was at this point that Preston got a base hit. Carlos, it was all me. My bad. :D
  13. I think I know what game you're talking about. It was on Mother's Day a coupe of years ago. That was the same game that J.D. Drew pulled a muscle and was put on the DL. I remember Chip/Steve and Pat/Ron all agreeing that the game should have been called a lot earlier because of playing conditions.
  14. I went up to the Milwaukee Art Museum over the weekend for an exhibition that I was looking forward to. In doing some of the research on how to get there, I found out that it was "Meet the Brewers" day at the Museum. About 12 Brewers players were going to be at the museum over the course of the day signing autographs and posing for pictures. I get there and Damian Miller and Carlos Lee were the two signing. I thanked Damian for 2003 (He said what a great time it was for him and all the Cubs players) and told Carlos that the Cubs may need a LF next year. (He just smiled). My point is this: if the Cubs did something similar, the line would be wrapped around until next Tuesday. I walked right in, didn't even wait in line and got to meet what arguably is the Brewers best player and their starting catcher. For that sort of accessibility to players, I'm going to quietly root for the Brewers while still cheering on the Cubs. Just thought I would share.
  15. For what it's worth, I met Carlos Lee at the Milwaukee Art Museum over the weekend and told him that the Cubs may need a left fielder next year. He just smiled. Of course, the Brewers PR person sitting next to him was not amused with my comment, but why would she be?
  16. I respectfully disagree. I don't see how playing the game does anything to make you more likely to be a better manager. It gives you the respect of the players, which is more than any ability to pull together a lineup. It's the same as any job: if you don't have respect for your boss, would you do a good job? The way the baseball world works you have to put in your time in the minors, in the front office, etc. for the major league level. It's an old-school mentality that wouldn't readily accept a manager who has no playing experience.
  17. Yikes. Maybe I should have put the disclaimer on this thread "Nobody likes the DH, but I'm tired of all the Cubs are teh suck threads and want to talk more abstract baseball." Of course, that would have significantly lengthened the thread title.
  18. This was a topic that was broached in the "yanks getting old in a hurry" thread and I thought deserved a little discussion. It's true that the AL is where baseball gets the most attention (not only because of the Yanks/Red Sox) nowadays. It's also of note that 7 of the last 10 and 13 of the last 20 World Series have been won by AL teams. Certainly a lot of that, especially more recently, has to do with the DH. American League offenses are stacked because of that inclusion, and NL teams have to worry about their 7-8-9 batters when entering AL parks. While good pitching beats good hitting, it can't be overlooked. The question I pose is not whether the NL should enact the DH, but rather would it be feasible? Are there enough DHs to go around in two leagues and how would it affect players who are mainly kept for their NL-style of play (i.e. smallball, moving the runner over, etc.)?
  19. Three more words: 1998 Gary Gaieti. Hey, a guy can dream right?
  20. that was 1st base coach He was 1st base coach, then hitting, then bench as I recall. He moved to the FO to get away from the travel after that. I didnt realize Williams was a hitting coach, I just thought he was 1st base coach and bench He was also the outfield defense coach for a while. Boy, an outfield defense coach could teach to hit the cutoff man. If there's anyone within the current Cubs organization that could snap some sense into our hitters, it's Billy Williams, he of the 426 career home runs and .361 lifetime OBP.
  21. How many second basemen do you want? We're having an inventory-clearance sale.
  22. [really bad joke] How about Ugg? [/really bad joke] I think most certain-lee. Oh, I need to lie down.
  23. Not to mention the fact that he is as big a baseball pariah as they come. I can't imagine any MLB team letting him within 500 yards of a professional playing surface.
  24. I actually had an opportunity to go to Sunday's game with a friend of mine. If the Cubs were a better team, I would have been willing to do so. But $75 to see your team get hammered in enemy territory is not how I roll. Here's hoping I'm wrong.
  25. Not to derail this thread, but the idea of a NSBBer for GM begs the question: Where the heck has Hoops been?! Talk about a guy who has his ear to the heartbeat of the Cubs organization. . .
