  1. Nah, McClellan was a good detail-oriented planner and organizer, but wasn't bold enough to follow through on anything. Dusty is plenty bold, but a lousy planner who is unwilling or unable to keep track of multiple details. He's probably more of a John Bell Hood. I'm thinking we got more of a Ulysses S. Grant. Relies about exclusively on reputation while putting unqualified parties in positions of power.
  2. Yeah, 18% of Cubs fans have no idea what a manager's job is.
  3. Patterson could get sacked by the same guy who sacked him on the Cubs. Sooner or later, Corey's going to think Hendry has a vendetta against him.
  4. Bruce, tell everyone in a Cubs uniform I am extremely disappointed in them. Thank you, that is all. You make Ronnie Woo Woo sad. Woo! -sob- Woo! -sob- Woo!
  5. His minor league numbers are better than Todd Helton. This guy is a good player. Then he has no place on the Cubs. And for those who are concerned that he'll be blocked when Lee comes back, he should still get significant playing time because Lee won't be 100% right away. It's really a value situation. If Colorado is going to sell lower because of Helton's presence, then we should jump on Shealy. Worst case scenario he's a good bench bat. The guy can flat out hit. So if sign him, do we DFA Mabry? Mabry would seem to be redundant. Or do we DFA Bynum and use Mabry exclusively as OF?

  7. I don't know. I think the writing may be on the wall for Rothchild too. After three consecutive years of injuries to the two most important pitchers on the staff, and the non-development of minor league pitching in the majors, I think Larry's fate is tied to Dusty's. I think, as others do, that Speier may be the direction the club goes in an interim basis. Although for Speier's sake, i hope not. I don't want him to fall to the same fate as Bruce Kimm.
  8. So what you're saying is he'll fit right in?
  9. In Dunston's defense, the Shawn-O-Meter is in the Smithsonian. I can't imagine Neifi having anything put in America's attic like that, unless you want to include his latest contract as an example of the stupidest act in American baseball history.
  10. Derrek Lee will be wearing a pink cast for the occasion. :( Dusty will be chewing pink toothpicks.
  11. Again, I completely disagree, but that's how it goes. I think that if you call out the group rather than single out individuals, it can have a positive effect. If that's the case then the Cubs' fans of 1983 should have been the best fans in the world after Lee Elia's tirade.
  12. I'm pretty sure any inhabitant of the Lincoln Park Zoo could light a fire under this team better than Dusty. . . except the penguins, they're just bad news all around.
  13. I know it's been said in the past that Dusty will address players directly with their faults if things go wrong. That's one of his perceived strengths as a manger and partially why he's seen as a "player's manager." It's sort of like a parent waiting until they're in private to yell at their kids. There's no need to do it in a public forum if it can be avoided. What good does telling the media "we stink" do for a team that's already pressing and demoralized. When Jerry Hairston struck out in the top of the fifth or sixth yesterday with two men in scoring position and two outs, the camera stuck with him. What did you see? An obviously frustrated player flip his bat in disgust and scream out an expletive. It's not like the players come into the ballpark each day saying, "Gosh we suck. But the pay sure is good." These are people that are as frustrated as we are (well, maybe Aramis isn't, but I digress). It is counter-productive for their boss to go out in public and keep the negativity going. Dusty is trying to put the best face on the Titanic. He recognizes how bad things are. He'd have to be braindead not to.
  14. He's not even a patch. You put a free swinger like Soriano on a team where the manager's best hitting advice is "be aggressive" and you can watch his OBP drop like a stone and his K-rate increase exponetially.
  15. I'd hold out for Pujols and that Carpender dude. He seems like a decent pitcher. How about we do Hill and Williams for Pujols, Carpenter and Rolen? Pujols and Carpenter are good, but for the quality we're sending their way, they should make it worth our while.
  16. Hendry: "Hey Neifi, could you give me a hand out here with some of these bags of balls?" -promptly shoves Neifi into bag and sends him to Siberia- BTW, I guess the youth movement is officially a go! 3 position players with less than 1 full year of MLB tenure and 5 pitchers? Here comes that division crown.
  17. Didn't Jack McKeon move Dontrelle Willis to 8th in the order last year when he was hitting the cover off the ball? I seem to remember some manager pulling that move. Talk about demoralizing for whoever's in the nine hole. Neifi and Freddie, I'm looking at you. *glare*
  18. The sad thing I agree 100% with you. How egomaniacal must you be to drag not only a team of 25 ballplayers who want to win, but a legion of fans into the proverbial gutter just so you can leave town on your terms? But the question is, who replaces Dusty on an interim basis? During yesterday's pre-game, Santo was discussing the future with Chris Speier. Speier has managerial aspirations. Might not be the worst choice in the world.
  19. See the problem with any discussion of Hendry and Baker and their future with the Cubs is that Cubs management gives both the benefit of the doubt because of injuries. I know, I know, it's not a valid excuse for three straight years, but if you look at it: 2004: Wood, Prior. Sosa 2005: Wood, Prior, Ramirez, Nomar 2006: Wood, Prior, Lee That's what the majority of fans and ownership see when they view the failures of the past three years. That makes signings like Rusch, Neifi, Hollandsworth, Ordonez, and Jones pale in comparison. The rationale being that those signing weren't bad if the big guns come out to play.
  20. Okay, let's say that the Nats are willing to listen to a deal for Johnson. What do we do with him after Lee comes back? Use him as trade bait? The guy can only pay one position and hasn't proven that he's the most resilient player in the MLB. I admire your vision, but I don't see how this would be of any use to us. BTW, Christian Guzman's season being over is probably one of the best pieces of news the Nats have. It's rare that a player makes Neifi look good. Guzman is that player.
  21. Shoot, by Labor Day, they'll be ridiculing the hell out of home players.
  22. And here I thought the prayer for this thread would be "Dear God take me now."
  23. Remember when we had a 3-4-5 of Sosa, McGriff and Alou and we thought we had it made? . . . man, those were the days (of suckitude, mind you, but it's better than the 3-4-5 we've had the past couple of years).
  24. Any idea of what they are asking? If I'm the D-Backs, I start with Hill. The Cubs are in a bind, the whole league knows it. Since Arizona has no need to get rid of Clark, why not shoot for the moon? I mean, Hendry gave up three great prospects for a leadoff-hitting center fielder who OBP is almost completely dependent on his BA. After 28 years, I'm ready to call it quits with this stinking organization. I refuse to even call it a team.
  25. Haven't you heard? He's bad around the clubhouse, you know, with the flipping bats and everything?
