  1. Isn't that a bit over the top? Dismal? His OPS+ was significantly better than Juan Pierre's, 99 to 81. Certainly that's not good, but as a cheap, young CF, it's acceptable.
  2. I'm pretty sure the Cubs have, from time to time, held just 39, for one reason or another.
  3. I would forget about the idea of Soriano at 2nd.
  4. Pagan has to go. He's so incredibly worthless with Pie playing everyday. It's a no-brainer. If Ramirez looks to be out for 6-7 games, I could see them bringing in an extra bat and sending Gallagher back down.
  5. Is this guy really a 1B? I could see a small market team being willing to settle on a guy like this who is at least likely to contribute something, at a cheap price. But they can't be serious about him, can they?
  6. I don't like Jones or Izturis, and thought they'd each be relatively bad, but they've both significantly underperformed what I thought they were capable of doing. That's pretty amazing, in a pathetic sort of way.
  7. No. Why not, he always gets on a base. Soriano doesn't get hot til late in the game. you are confusing me.
  8. I like how Lou keeps talking about staying consistent with the lineup, while not staying consistent at all.
  9. I like 'em all. 5'11" and athletic, small and petite, big 'uns, backside, gams I'd never narrow it down to one type. Even though I've already narrowed it down to one specific woman.
  10. I would be surprised if Z was trying to play mind games.
  11. Last night they mentioned something about fireworks for HR's. Do they even do that there? They do. Saw it myself Monday night. Fireworks in a dome are incredibly stupid. It looked like the fog bowl in there.
  12. As long as they have Beltran, Reyes and Wright, to go along with a $100+ million payroll, their window will stay open. They could use some starting pitching help, with the old guys possibly on their last legs. But Rick Peterson has done an outstanding job of getting the most out of their young arms, like Maine and Perez.
  13. Has there been some sort of fog/smoke situation going on inside Miller Park?
  14. Especially since they only get to face them 6 more times the rest of the season.
  15. Nobody likes that bastard.
  16. Trying to cover their butts this early, huh. This can't help persuade the Trib to let them spend appropriately on this year's draft. Unlike Gallagher, Samardzija is a guy who needs to be in the rotation racking up the innings. Although I guess this helps them keep his innings total from going too far beyond anything he's done before.
  17. Well, they aren't exposing a guy who is all that raw. Gallagher isn't some projectible kid desperate for innings to harness his stuff. Is this the best way to go? Probably not. But it doesn't have to be damaging either. If they spend the next 4 months taking him in and out of the rotation and bullpen, letting him sit for 10 days and then pitching him 3 times in 4 days, then there will be an issue. But I don't think Lou is the same as Dusty as far as treating the young relievers like that. And as for him potentially getting rocked, I say who cares. If he gets lit up his next couple times, then send him back to AA to get back on track and take it as a learning opportunity. If he gets mentally damaged from that, well, he wasn't going to make it in the majors, because just about everybody gets hit hard from time to time, especially early in their career.
  18. Well, his option clock doesn't start until they send him back down, so if he sticks, this isn't an issue. But even if they do use up his first option in a few weeks, they will have 2008, and 2009 to use options. If Gallagher can't stick with the big club by 2010, at least in the bullpen, then how much hope is there for his future anyway? He should have a good 700-800 professional innings under his belt by then, including plenty of time at both AA and AAA. Even if you conservatively assume he goes back to AA in a month, he will have 2008 and 2009 to master AAA. I'd think he will be, at the minimum, a solid candidate for bullpen duty by 2010, making the minimum and hopefully throwing strikes. Even if he suffers setbacks along the road, they can make room. This is definitely a move by a GM who isn't all that concerned about tomorrow. But the fact remains, the new GM should be able to work around the option issue with Gallagher, when the time comes. If Hendry trades Gallagher for some bullpen help, then it's time to get pissed.
  19. Supposedly Guzman to the DL. The 60 day? They'd need to move someone off the 40 man by either putting them on the 60 day or optioning them off/DFA someone or make a trade. I think Miller to the 60-day would be the obvious move. Blanco to the 60-day might also be a possibility depending on the severity of his injury. They also still have time to make a trade that affects the 40 man, although Miller DFA/60 and releasing Dopirak are probably the most likely. I'd be surprised if Blanco goes 60 day.
  20. That's exactly how I feel about the situation as well. I as well. Gallagher isn't some raw wild thing are desperately in need of the innings he'd get right now as a starter. But he's still probably going to get a good amount by seasons end. There is no reliever on the 40-man that is an obvious candidate to get the job. It'll be 2010 before the Cubs run the risk of having this option issue come back to haunt them. By then we'll have a pretty good idea if he's going to be a guy worth sticking with. He's probably not going to rack up enough service time to really have this affect his arbitration or free agent numbers.
  21. I was expecting 8, but I was holding out hope that Tank already serving jail time and being let out early for good behavior would knock it down to 4. Tank does seem to be saying all the right things, but when PacMan got a whole season, I didn't see Tank getting less than six or seven and expected 8-10. I hoped for less, but thought it would be 8 games for awhile. The thing about this 'deal' is, if he doesn't behave it won't really revert to 8 games instead of 6. It'll mean he's done something bad again, which will really mean more games, probably the rest of the season. So really, I'm looking at as a 6 game suspension, which would probably turn into an entire season if he screws up. If he skips counseling it will be 8 games, but he won't be suspended further. I'm also guessing that the threshold for police related interactions is much lower for it to stay at 8, compared to getting a whole new suspension.
  22. that's officially my guess. suspending him is quite stupid for the team's sake. As far as I know, they can't just suspend him and add a guy to the 25-man roster, there would have to be another move, and that would punish somebody else for Z's actions, no? Right, but if Zambrano instigated a fight, isn't it stupid not to suspend him for a start? I'd think it would make more sense to give Guzman a start and just go five innings in Zambrano's place, than to call up Gallagher and have to do something with another player. No, I don't believe it would be stupid. It doesn't do the team any good to suspend Z.
  23. Not trying to be overly skeptical but wouldn't we have heard some buzz about Z getting traded before this? Not necessarily. It wouldn't be unprecedented for a trade to happen without any leaks in advance. It would have happened so fast that the story would be hard to get out there. Although I do doubt that Z was traded.
