  1. I agree with your line of thinking (although I'm not even considering that last part). I'd like to see him stay at 3b regardless if he's gold glove or a little shaky. But it was a common concern that I read about him leading up to and after the draft "if he can stick at 3b". Part of me is just worried about the fate of many Cubs prospects who were forced to move positions, Kelton to OF, Montanez to 2B then LF, Harvey to pitcher (oh wait), etc.
  2. Okay, so now we have all the picks up, anybody have any post-op breakdown of the draft? Any stories out there with expectations for these guys? I'm getting a little excited about the possibility of a real catcher coming up through the system. Obviously most of the talk is going to revolve around Vitters for now. I hope like heck he can stick at 3B and not be like most Cubs high school draftees.
  3. I don't have a problem with no hitting anybody else. You have to win the game and need your arms. I just don't get why they didn't argue. It appeared to me he was out by a long margin, and he hit Fontenot. The ump made a delayed indecisive safe call. Lou should have been out there if only to complain about the out/safe call, but also to complain about the slide itself.
  4. I doubt he's available. He's signed through next year and having a great season on a 1st place team. But no, I'm not much of a fan. This year is clearly a fluke. He's 32 and putting up an OPS+ 45.3% above his career average of 86. He has a career .321 OBP, which is weak, but tolerable. Howeve, he's been at .306 and .309 in 2 of of the previous 3 seasons. He turns 33 this November. I'm guessing maybe the Angels would trade him in his walk year, but how much would you have to give up for the right to pay him $9m and hope he doesn't regress? I'm not a fan either, to be honest. Just think he is an interesting name especially considering he has been a target in the past. He is an interesting name. If LAA wanted to trade him this year and took back Izturis + Jones, that would be nice. Cabrera certainly stands a better shot of not being a black hole. But once you make the trade, I fear they give him something like 4/40 which his numbers don't seem to justify.
  5. Yeah I believe it, it's obvious. He started the season banged up. He missed at least one start, and probably two this weekend, which would have vaulted him over Murton easily. There was talk of a back issue with Murton, but no evidence, and he said he was fine. Floyd has been injured most of his career and moves around like Bonds nowadays. He's clearly incapable of starting everyday and being held back due to health. You need evidence of Murton's back injury? I like Murton and feel he should be playing 80% of the time but Floyd has clearly outplayed him this year. A Floyd/Murton platoon makes so much sense right now. I don't understand why management is being so patient with Jones. If you can't trade him just bench him. He's clearly the inferior player to Murton and Floyd. It's so frusterating. What I mean is that Floyd has clearly been held back more to injury than Murton. There was talk by Lou that he was sitting Murton for health reasons, but it seems pretty clear that was mostly talk, even if Murton was dinged up. Floyd is a walking injury. The only reason Murton has more ABs than Floyd is because of the health of Floyd (and his father).
  6. the reds fans i know hate dunn, and pretty much blame their team's struggles on dunn's bad defense and strikeouts. From the few times I've heard their radio team on XM, I think the announcers blame him as well.

  9. The only reason is Floyd's health (and his father's). And this isn't just a Floyd vs Murton debate. It's primarily Jones who has trumped both in playing time.
  10. Floyd's not hitting the ball? I posted this in the other thread: Murton (116 AB's)-.259/.338/.345 Floyd (111 AB's)-.306/.364/.423 So Floyd has been over 100 points of OPS better than Murton, and yet played less than him. Right now, Floyd's the guy who should be playing more if Lou wants to play guys who have produced. I agree with you completely with Jones-if Murton is not hurt, then Lou absolutely should not be starting Jones in RF. He's not hitting for power. He's got a sub 800 OPS. So no, he's not really hitting. He's got a nice average, but that's about it. And the only reason he's played less is because he's so fragile and has been on the bereavement list.
  11. I doubt it. He's on record saying expensive veterans get the nod. He's clearly a guy who prefers to have some LH bats. He's got Floyd and Jones pencilled in ahead of him. I think it's pretty obvious what is going on there, nothing behind the scenes at all.
  12. Every game? Or barely any games?
  13. Because he's overrated and not very good. It would be so very Cubs like to pay anything for the crap production a guy like Eckstein is likely to give as he enters his mid 30's. Aneheim and STL got the most out of him, he's gotten the most out of his talent. But the pumpkin is going to show up soon and the Cubs should not be the one holding onto his contract when it does. If they can't get ARod, then fill SS internally with some $350,000 fill-ins and spend money on players that would actually improve the team.
  14. They are 6 games under .500. How much credit should management get? I like Lou better than Dusty. But the team is still a disappointment.
  15. What's more disgusting? Paying $4M to Izturis or $4M to Eckstein? I'm all for going with Theriot if he's ready. See, the problem is Eckstein's name should not be mentioned. There's no reason to even consider him a fallback. It's not whether or not he's better than Izturis.
  16. I wouldn't give Ronny a shot at SS expecting him to become a really good one. But I think he could be given a shot at SS if the rest of the team is structured properly to take advantage of his low price tag. If you are going to get crap production out of a position, you better be paying $350,000 for it, and not $4.5 million.
  17. Lilly looks ridiculous in that picture. He just threw a pitch, he wasn't posing for a photo op! I realize that, but it looks like he just tossed a ball up there while standing flat footed. He doesn't look like he just threw a pitch.
  18. funny how when murton can't hit for beans, everyone says it's because he's not getting regular playing time... when jones can't hit, it's because he flat-out sucks. Funny how stupid that comparison is. Jacque plays all the time and sucks. Murton has stunk this year, but has 40% fewer chances. As brief as his career has been so far, he's already outperforming Jones.
  19. The fact that you repeatedly said the name Eckstein really disgusts me. He's approaching his mid 30's now, and was never that good to begin with. Let Theriot play the role of Eckstein circa 2005 at a fraction of the cost, or go in a completely different direction. But don't pay millions for that type of production.
  20. Lilly looks ridiculous in that picture.
  21. Or Pagan could go...he is the next one to go... If they hope to not waste the value of Matt Murton, I think they should option him to AAA so he can play everyday and get back on track. Pagan can backup Pie in CF. Murton can come back if/when Jones is gone, or they could build up his trade value and get something for him. Murton as the 6th OF just isn't good for anybody.
  22. It's actually quite easy. 2- Barrett 3- Lee 4- DeRosa 5- Ramirez 6- Theriot 7- Dunn 8- Pie 9- Soriano would be a hell of a lineup. You'd have to be completely biased against or ignorant of the value of OBP/SLG to not see why Dunn in this lineup would be a good thing. Although at this point, all the other stuff that would go into getting Dunn makes me less interested.
  23. I'd rather he be on the DL than being unavailable on the bench.
  24. Because ESPN knew if they excluded BA they'd have all the lowest common denominator idiots whining about not including batting average, because it's a traditional stat. I disagree. They included it because they are lowest common deonominator idiots.
  25. Well, it helps to make up for ignoring slg. a bit. Do they ignore SLG? Isn't that what batted based accumulated is supposed to be?
