  1. So you'd take the guy who drives in fewer runs, and scores fewer runs (if the preferred OBP is lower, and his HR are lower, he will score less) all because you don't like the average? This makes no sense. What makes no sense is you seem to think a players OBP and HR totals a mainly tied to their runs scored production. You can have lower OBP and HR's and still score a truck load of runs. The point is you specifically said you would prefer the player with a lower RBI total but claimed if he changed his style he'd hit more. It's nonsensical. R and RBI are team oriented. The only thing a player can do to affect his R and RBI totals are produce OBP and SLG.
  2. I saw the first inning on TV, then listened to the rest while driving home from the beach. My XM was dead and I had to rely on the randomly placed ESPN affiliated radio stations that weren't carrying the basketball game. Of course the signal was at it's worst just as Dempster imploded.
  3. It's too bad he threw 117 last time, and 125 three starts ago. It seems likes every start Z has had to reach back and get a little something extra. The worse his slump got the more effort he seems to be putting into his outings, and that's not necessarily a good thing for pitchers. I'd really hate to see him battle through 6 and have the coaches try and get 7 or 8 out of him by extending him, when it already appears there is something wrong with the guy. Lilly and Marquis should be available if they need a couple innings tonight. Marquis isn't scheduled for a regular start until Thursday, and he's coming off a 50 pitch outing. Hell, I could live with Zambrano for 6, Marquis for 2 and Dempster for 1. Just as important as Zambrano having a good long outing, the offense really needs to score 6 or 7 tonight.

  5. That's simply not the case.
  6. Good golly, what a bunch of nonsense.
  7. Yes. Pitching to Andruw Jones was something he never should have done. The interesting thing is Andruw was not getting good swings every time against Marquis. Several balls that he fouled off he just barely got a piece of. When he put it fair though, they were rockets. Marquis just struggled finding the zone last night. Combine that with 1 hitter who just torches him, and an error by Marquis, and it led to disaster. I think you could say he pitched worse than his line. 1 2/3 (does anybody else hate the 1.1 and 1.2 distinctions? If you want decimels, write 1.3 and 1.7) and 2 ER saves his ERA quite a bit.
  8. No. The fact of the matter is MLB's stupid rules allow this sort of stuff to happen. It's unfair, but it's not anti-Cubs. The first pitcher to hit a guy almost always gets away with it (Hudson). Lilly plunking Renteria was kind of blatant. Personally I think they should have left it there, and then it's done. But due to the rules, the ump felt he needed to toss Lilly, and when a pitcher is tossed by an ump, MLB's punishment often comes down on that player, regardless of what Cox or Hudson did. As for Renteria, you can make a case that what he did more or less follows the guidelines of what is acceptable, it's similar to what ARod did a couple weeks ago and he wasn't punished. I think that if Lilly gets a suspension, then out of fairness MLB should suspend Renteria. But then you get into the debate about equivalency between starting pitcher suspensions and position player suspensions. The best option is no suspensions, except for the umps, and a cleaning up of these stupid rules about how to handle ejections/warnings.
  9. I noticed that as well. I was watching the game with a Cardinals fan and even he was going crazy over the blown call. And when you go back and look at that picture, Renteria is grabbing Fontenot's glove with his right hand, and hacking his throat with his "injured" left hand. If you watch the replay, when Renteria pops off 2nd base, he's still holding onto Fontenot's mitt. How is what Renteria did at 2nd base any different than when Robert Fick hacked at Eric Karros in '03, or when A-Rod hacked at whoever was at 1st for the Red Sox a few years ago? Neither got a suspension, but were penalized heavily if I recall correctly. The braves issued a team suspension, i believe, to Fick. Either way, there should be a fine coming. He was out by a solid margin. The ump at 2nd did a horrible job. he was all confused and barely made the call.
  10. That's in, you're done means there will be no more plunking. It wasn't until after that that Wolf changed his mind and decided to throw Lilly out. It was more than just a wrong signal, it was complete umpire incompetence.
  11. That's the biggest problem. Wolf screwed up with his initial response. If he truly expected it, he would have tossed Lilly immediately. It was relatively justifiable, and plunking Renteria was blatantly on purpose. But you can't warn both benches then toss Lilly. It shows indecisiveness and contradicts his statement that he was expecting it.
  12. Well, that's about the most popular reason to hit a guy, behind hitting a guy because they hit one of yours.
  13. Lilly and Marquis should be available out of the pen tonight. Gallagher maybe not until Tuesday. Wuertz, Ohman and Eyre should be available as well. If they were 23 year olds I'd say no way, but when you are talking about 30 year olds with long track records, good health and not a lot of upside from here, I'd have no problem throwing them back out there right away.
  14. Well, Edgar did say he didn't really have a problem with getting hit, he had a problem with the ball being up at his head. A justifiable stance. Then again, Hudson's pitch was up near Soriano's head.
  15. Realistically, Jones is going to play. He will not be benched, and he will not be released. The argument we are having is purely hypothetical. Therefore, you can't say that Jones automatically means a lot fewer ABs for others. Hypothetically, it would be best if Jones were benched and Pagan sent to AAA. That way Murton could get his ABs, and we would still have a chance to trade Jones. Problems solved. Realistically the only way to solve the problem is the trade him ASAP or DFA. Jones sucks, he was a predictably bad signing and the Cubs will be better off without him.
  16. Castillo? Maybe I've been abroad too long, but wasn't he sent back to Mesa? If you mean Carrillo, this is an interesting turn from where you stood at the end of last year when he came up to Peoria briefly and you were not impressed. What's changed about him since then, out of curiosity? It looks to me like Welington Castillo is on Peoria and putting up identically unimpressive numbers as Lansford. Although he just turned 20 and is a catcher while Lansford is almost 23.
  17. Pretending the Jones/Floyd/Murton pileup isn't a bad thing doesn't make it so. Pagan is the backup CF, the only legit one of the team. Jones on the roster means less ABs for Floyd and Murton. Jones off the team means more AB for Floyd and Murton. The salary is blown one way or the other. Keeping him doesn't make the payments any easier. The question is pay him to suck or pay him not to play, while at the same time taking a chance somebody else would pick him up and cleaning up your screwed up roster.
  18. The compelling reason is that he sucks. But yes, the current crop of 6 OF and 1 backup MI is a bad mix. Even with Ramirez they are short on infielders.
  19. I don't think it's about sensibilities being shocked. This is just one of many things that have shown up on myspace pages that have come back to haunt people. I think this shows a lack of judgement on his part. Everybody knows money motivates everybody else. When you advertise like that, you do a couple things, like tip off some scouts or decisions makers about a potential lack of desire to improve as a baseball player. He wouldn't be the first guy to cash in and then check out. Wouldn't you hesitate to pay somebody that much if they were that excited about it that they'd put it out on a website that has repeatedly gotten people into hot water?
  20. Less AB by Jones means more for Murton and Floyd, who are both better than him. True, but that makes the best solution benching him. I admit that it won't happen under Pinellia and Hendry, but neither will DFAing him, so I assumed we were speaking in hypotheticals. Not necessarily. He's redundent while the team is lacking infield help. If you dump him for Fontenot, he might give you less production, but he can play positions Jacque can't play, and that's a need. Jones is not outperforming any other OF on the team. His numbers could very easily stay as bad as they are, and if they are, or even close, he's clearly the worst OF on the roster and the obvious candidate for getting rid of him. But the fact that he makes the money he makes only encourages Lou to use him more, so talking about DFA vs bench isn't realistic.
  21. How many more years until people start learning this stuff can only come back to bite you? I kind of find it funny. There's a lot of funny stuff in people's lives that doesn't reflect well on them.
  22. Yeah, no wonder, because a guy like this is actually one of the better ones. Cubs fans are always disappointed because nobody ever comes up and produces. Guys who become really good major leaguers do a whole lot better than what this guy has done at low A. He may lead the team, but that's because the team stinks. He's tied for about 40th in the league.
  23. Less AB by Jones means more for Murton and Floyd, who are both better than him.
  24. It would severaly hinder the minor league baseball business, by virtually eliminating the need for many sub A ball teams. College baseball doesn't come close to drawing enough revenue to pay scholarships to all the really good 18 year olds that would otherwise choose to go pro out of high school. You would end up losing a ton of talent overall. And there just isn't enough economic incentive for them to do it, I guess.
  25. Lansford's been awful with the bat????? He is hitting .287 which is higher than any other player on our roster who was here on Opening Day. He is 2nd on the team in RBI, 1st in doubles, doesnt strikeout much (20 in 180 AB) and is easily the one guy on this team I would want up in a clutch situation. And he is the best defensive 3rd baseman I have seen in the MWL. .694 OPS, 50th in the league. 20/11 K/BB. Average doesn't mean much.
