He's many years from making the big team, at which point both Ramirez and Lee may be gone. There's no reason to worry about Colvin, Patterson or others as far as blocking. Let them all play and things will work themselves out several years down the line.

I'm far from an expert on the guy. But don't expect to see him hit the majors for 4-5 years, at least. We should be happy if he does this: 2007 - AZL rookie 2008 - Peoria low A 2009 - Daytona high A 2010 - Tenn AA 2011 - Iowa AAA, possible September callup. This would be steady, but not overly conservative, given that he'd make the majors at 22. There's no reason to worry about position, he should go to 3rd and hopefully stick there, since his bat is worth much less as a corner OF.

I think it's still a bit premature for that. There's nobody who is going to replace him now who is going to be significantly better, whether that ends up being Pagan (I know, he's up right now, but Ward will probably replace him when he comes back), Cedeno, or Fontenot. Jones isn't necessarily completely washed up yet-trade him for absolutely anything you can get, but just releasing him doesn't really help the Cubs right now without a great option to replace him on the roster. Right now, he can be a pinch hitter and backup CF. A month ago I may have agreed. But time's a wasting, and this roster needs fixing. They need backup IF help ASAP. An OF of Soriano, Pie, Floyd/Murton, with Ward and Pagan on the bench is as good or better than one that has Jones in the mix. At the very least you cut down substantially on veteran whining, by getting Jones out of here and Floyd more playing time. And Jones has shown no signs of hitting his way out of this funk. Last year's slow start didn't last in May, let alone June. Jacque and the Cubs are like poison to each other at this point. There is no value in having him on the team, and it's quite possibly there is actually negative value.

I'm ignorant of the details so, this may be a dumb question but, does Jones have any options left? If so, send him down, if not, unless necessitated by injury, etc., why does he have play at all? With Pie taking over in CF, why not go with a straight platoon of Floyd and Murton in RF? I don't know if they used up his 3 options but I'm certain he's accrued the service time necessary for veterans to have the right to refuse the demotion.

Do they actually think Culpepper would be better for them than Leftwich or Garrard? I know Jacksonville has QB issues, but this move just seems to crowd things without solving anything. I would think he stands a good chance of being better than both.

Was just about to say the same thing. If Donaldson turns into a solid starting catcher with some offense, and they get a few quality utility guys and a reliever or two out of this draft, I'd have to call it a success even if Vitters misses his upside. -
looks to me like everybody flamed the Cubs organization for mere rumors about taking a guy that Billy Beane ended up taking, and yet no criticism was directed his way. it also looks like there is an aweful lot of anger at the Cubs for taking an approach to this draft that is not unlike the approach that Billy Beane takes to the draft, and the founder of this board got flamed for even pointing that out. The "flaming" was about rumors they'd take him with the 3rd pick. They were unfounded rumors, but rumors nonetheless. I don't see an awful lot of anger. I see some anger from some people who had strong opinions about specific players going in, but most of what has been going on is observation about the apparant strategy, and not necessarily blasting that strategy. The biggest anger is about the apparant lack of available funds to really invest heavily in what was thought to be a deep draft.

A guy like Doolittle is probably a better fits for the A's than the Cubs though. As far as I can tell, he's a good bet to make the majors and contribute something, the problem is he's not likely to be very good. And he should be relatively signable. The A's system is all about maximizing value. What they don't want is a huge money high risk high reward kid sitting in their minor league system for 5 years developing. They need to keep churning out minimum wage players who can make the majors relatively quickly and hold their own. Given their financial position, the Cubs can afford to take bigger risks on higher upside players, and they should. Although there's nothing wrong with going safe here and there to try and plug holes on the cheap, so they can spend big on real impact players and not bench players.

That's true except for Iowa. Also, I don't think he actually played in the championship for West Tenn; I think that was the year he missed most of the second half due to injury. [/nitpick] I thought it was actually the RIOT who played on a championship team every year in the minors? Maybe i'm completely wrong but that's what I thought had been said. Didn't Patterson and/or Choi? I don't really put much stock into such oddities.

I'd live with a 3rd, but as we get down to 4th round territory, it's beginning to not be worth it.

Speaking of DeRosa, some people (I'm thinking Santo) have complained about him being too patient. Well, he hasn't drawn a walk in 10 games now. His IsoD has fallen from over .100 to .087, and his OBP has gone from a significant strength to pretty ho-hum. He has been a success overall though.

Remember, Floyd got that money from the Cubs. He wasn't talking to anybody else. I'm not sure a utility OF is really more in demand than a utility IF. It's probably possible to deal him, but Jim has been looking to move him for several months, and there's been very little action. I think they will have to almost eat the entire contract, or take back a similar contract, to move him.

I thought about him, but he's still played enough to be qualified for the batting title. His time off was largely affected by his health, and he's started in something like 13 of the last 14 games. DeRosa is also on pace to play in more games and get more PA than his average season.

That, and whatever emotional reaction he has to the Cubs organization, seeing as how his dad was somewhat unceremoniously let go.

I think there is reason to be optimistic the Cubs can outperform the Cardinals this year. Not sure about the rest of the league though.

Yeah, I would hope the likes of Thomas, Barney, Wright, Hardman, and Smith would be able to handle Peoria. Skipping Boise? I figured most college guys started in short season, while high school and foreign kids went to Mesa. Only the best college guys start in A ball, no?

The Cubs should either dominate the Arizona rookie league, or have nobody but Vitters and Acosta there to play a game. These college guys should all be able to start at short season A ball right? They are all already 20 or 21, and some will turn 22 soon.

Wild guess, but the Cubs may be looking to offset the challenge of working around the bloated contracts of their recent free agents by stocking the back of the bench and bullpen with low ceiling college players (ie. able to reach the bigs in 2-3 years). Obviously, as late as we are now, the ceilings aren't going to be all that high anyway. But since Vitters, it's been all college.

He could be traded if the Cubs ate most of the contract for this year and next. If the Cubs pay 4 of the 6M then he's a 2M dollar outfielder with the ability to play all three outfield positions (though none particularly well) who hits left handed. He would make a fine fourth outfielder or the left half of a platoon. Unfortunately, I'm not sure Hendry is willing (because he's an idiot) or able (what with the impending sale of the team) to eat that much contract. When you see the interest that a guy like Jose Cruz got this offseason, a better version of the versatile 4th OF, I'm not sure there is much of a market for such a player. Teams paid dearly for starters who could log innings and leadoff/CF types. The market for mediocre corner OF is not so hot.

You have to wonder if the release of Jones is being delayed because it would be an outright admission of a mistake by Hendry, and thus a reason why they might hold back funds for a further move. If he's going to waste millions on a guy like Jones, why give him another few million to play with?
