  1. Trying to cover their butts this early, huh. This can't help persuade the Trib to let them spend appropriately on this year's draft. Unlike Gallagher, Samardzija is a guy who needs to be in the rotation racking up the innings. Although I guess this helps them keep his innings total from going too far beyond anything he's done before.
  2. Well, they aren't exposing a guy who is all that raw. Gallagher isn't some projectible kid desperate for innings to harness his stuff. Is this the best way to go? Probably not. But it doesn't have to be damaging either. If they spend the next 4 months taking him in and out of the rotation and bullpen, letting him sit for 10 days and then pitching him 3 times in 4 days, then there will be an issue. But I don't think Lou is the same as Dusty as far as treating the young relievers like that. And as for him potentially getting rocked, I say who cares. If he gets lit up his next couple times, then send him back to AA to get back on track and take it as a learning opportunity. If he gets mentally damaged from that, well, he wasn't going to make it in the majors, because just about everybody gets hit hard from time to time, especially early in their career.
  3. Well, his option clock doesn't start until they send him back down, so if he sticks, this isn't an issue. But even if they do use up his first option in a few weeks, they will have 2008, and 2009 to use options. If Gallagher can't stick with the big club by 2010, at least in the bullpen, then how much hope is there for his future anyway? He should have a good 700-800 professional innings under his belt by then, including plenty of time at both AA and AAA. Even if you conservatively assume he goes back to AA in a month, he will have 2008 and 2009 to master AAA. I'd think he will be, at the minimum, a solid candidate for bullpen duty by 2010, making the minimum and hopefully throwing strikes. Even if he suffers setbacks along the road, they can make room. This is definitely a move by a GM who isn't all that concerned about tomorrow. But the fact remains, the new GM should be able to work around the option issue with Gallagher, when the time comes. If Hendry trades Gallagher for some bullpen help, then it's time to get pissed.
  4. Supposedly Guzman to the DL. The 60 day? They'd need to move someone off the 40 man by either putting them on the 60 day or optioning them off/DFA someone or make a trade. I think Miller to the 60-day would be the obvious move. Blanco to the 60-day might also be a possibility depending on the severity of his injury. They also still have time to make a trade that affects the 40 man, although Miller DFA/60 and releasing Dopirak are probably the most likely. I'd be surprised if Blanco goes 60 day.
  5. That's exactly how I feel about the situation as well. I as well. Gallagher isn't some raw wild thing are desperately in need of the innings he'd get right now as a starter. But he's still probably going to get a good amount by seasons end. There is no reliever on the 40-man that is an obvious candidate to get the job. It'll be 2010 before the Cubs run the risk of having this option issue come back to haunt them. By then we'll have a pretty good idea if he's going to be a guy worth sticking with. He's probably not going to rack up enough service time to really have this affect his arbitration or free agent numbers.
  6. I was expecting 8, but I was holding out hope that Tank already serving jail time and being let out early for good behavior would knock it down to 4. Tank does seem to be saying all the right things, but when PacMan got a whole season, I didn't see Tank getting less than six or seven and expected 8-10. I hoped for less, but thought it would be 8 games for awhile. The thing about this 'deal' is, if he doesn't behave it won't really revert to 8 games instead of 6. It'll mean he's done something bad again, which will really mean more games, probably the rest of the season. So really, I'm looking at as a 6 game suspension, which would probably turn into an entire season if he screws up. If he skips counseling it will be 8 games, but he won't be suspended further. I'm also guessing that the threshold for police related interactions is much lower for it to stay at 8, compared to getting a whole new suspension.
  7. that's officially my guess. suspending him is quite stupid for the team's sake. As far as I know, they can't just suspend him and add a guy to the 25-man roster, there would have to be another move, and that would punish somebody else for Z's actions, no? Right, but if Zambrano instigated a fight, isn't it stupid not to suspend him for a start? I'd think it would make more sense to give Guzman a start and just go five innings in Zambrano's place, than to call up Gallagher and have to do something with another player. No, I don't believe it would be stupid. It doesn't do the team any good to suspend Z.
  8. Not trying to be overly skeptical but wouldn't we have heard some buzz about Z getting traded before this? Not necessarily. It wouldn't be unprecedented for a trade to happen without any leaks in advance. It would have happened so fast that the story would be hard to get out there. Although I do doubt that Z was traded.

  10. Miller or Dope off the 60-man. Z - DL/trade Eyre - DFA/trade Marmol/Guzman/Wuertz - sent to AAA (not likely) some random pitcher to the DL some out of nowhere trade
  11. I can't imagine them pulling anybody from the rotation, unless Zambrano has been traded or is injured. I could definitely see them putting him in the bullpen, even if he doesn't have experience there.
  12. There was some sort of dive sports bar I really enjoyed going to after Game 5. Probably not worth it during the regular season. I remember the park was pretty nice, but can't think of anything you need to eat.
  13. That's the problem. They spent a decade building the organization around the theory of stockpiling arms and then trading the surplus for bats when needed. And it's failed them miserably. They need to think of a way to start drafting and developing their own bats, and stop thinking pitching is the only thing.
  14. I think the problem he has is his comparisons were called pointless, which was completely unnecessary. I think Goony could have made his point without the condescending remark. I don't see how that is condescending. There was no point to comparing Kroeger to Hunter and Howard.
  15. Rusch Rusch Rusch Rusch Rusch Rusch Rusch Word sensor at work. big fat sloppy [expletive] little perky [expletive] rock hard fake [expletive]

  17. Victor was acquired by Jim Duquette, before Omar was hired.
  18. This is all pointless nonsense. A good team could very easily plug in a player like him into LF. If he's an .800+OPS player, then sure - but he won't bat in a run producing spot until if & when he shows himself to be that kind of player. If he's hitting like he is now, they can do it only if they can absorb the offense elsewhere. LF is not where you put complementary players. He's already shown that he is that kind of player.
  19. I don't understand how that makes their lineup any more impressive considering he hasn't been good this year. Their lineup is very Cubs like, with more homeruns. I don't think I'd call it all that impressive.
  20. Ryan Howard got a cup of coffee in 2004 at age 24. He split his age 25 season at AAA and the majors, and stuck in the majors at 26. He was also highly productive as he moved up the minor league ladder. He didn't repeat levels and advanced at a solid pace. This Kroeger character repeated high A, and washed out at AAA after playing there in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and getting worse each year. His age matters because it's only now, as he approaches 25, that he's putting up these numbers after a demotion back to AA. It would be insane to suggest he has to be an upgrade to Murton. Torii Hunter was in the majors by 22. He didn't stick until 25, but he got numerous shots before then. You comparisons are pointless. as are most if not all of your "observations". Well, at least you explained why. just my opinion. why argue with a man who knows everything there is to know about baseball? Who knows everything? All I know is Kroeger is a terrible comparison for Howard and Hunter.
  21. Theriot is hitting .266/.330/.337. Color me unimpressed. Theriot has 39 more AB than Izturis, who was supposedly our starting SS coming out of ST. Riot is getting his playing time. I'd rather have Theriot in the lineup, at least he can drive in a run. Before last night's game Izturis was stuck at 5rbi for the longest time. 6 rbi total from your starting SS is totally unacceptable, even if you are Cesar Izturis. at the risk of sounding like I'm defending Cesar, that's a terrible way to measure a player's performance Agree. Neither player is particularly good. Izturis may have more downside, but Theriot has been pretty bad at times as well.

  23. If the Cubs are not gonna play Murton, maybe they can package him in a deal for Byrnes. Sorinano, Pie, Byrnes is a pretty good outfield. Why would you consider packaging Murton in a deal for Byrnes? If anything, they should get Byrnes plus others for Murton. I wouldn't hold my breath on that.......... Byrnes is what Murton will be if Matt doesn't improve. He's been around for a long time now, is in his 30's, makes millions, and has about 100 OPS+ for his career.
  24. Dusty had the same thing. Lou went out to argue and get thrown out on purpose. He decided to make a scene, to divert attention away from the fight, and admitted it. Lou deserved the suspension, let's move on.
