  1. That double was the first really well hit ball of the inning though.
  2. I love that the defense of AA flameout label is that he'll flame out in AAA. If best case = Larry then I'm guessing we'll find out really soon, as Chipper was a pretty productive near 1:1 K:BB guy coming out of the gate.
  3. Just turned on TBS as the adorable red head was emerging from the dugout. Hopefully he has a game. Theriot never saw that one.
  4. Yeah, I was hoping playing Murton everyday was also going to be a part of the article. I disagree with trading him as well. But I think the point was, "if they aren't going to play him everyday". I say trade him if they aren't going to play him. Because the longer he stays as a part-time player, the more baseball will think of him as a part-time player, and bring down his value. But if you do trade him, don't do it for bullpen help.
  5. I'll bet, in his mind, there is no validity to any of a sportswriters ideas (or message board poster). And that's quite unfortunate. Because, he could learn a lot hanging out here. At least he earned enough money from the Cubs these past 5 years to retire, since that's probably what he'll have to do once he's gone from this organization. Who, in their right minds, would give him another chance? He was given the GM job with an ever increasing payroll, one of the top minor league organizations in baseball and much roster flexibility (limited guaranteed long term contracts. The sky was the limit. Basically, he was given what any GM would dream of having at their disposal. How is that working out right now? Not so good. I'm sure the baseball world will find a job for him somewhere, Ed Lynch style.
  6. Indeed. They seem to have a knack for playing well against good teams and playing sucky against teams that aren't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the NL Central is full of the latter. The recent run of poor play against LA, SD, NYM and PHI says otherwise. I do think that was a trend in 2004/2005. But they've only been beating bad teams. The last 4 series wins were against STL, Pit, Washington and the White Sox. The last good team they beat in a series was Milwaukee in week 1. They did pull off splits in 2 game series against SD and ATL.
  7. Sullivan comments suggests that he thinks ARam has been our best hitter and that's why he should bat 3rd. As for those of you who think Marquis as DH was tongue in cheek, I certainly didn't get that impression from the comments he wrote in the article. Sullivan's entire writing style seems tongue-in-cheek to me. It's his de facto mode.
  8. I think they should go with Blanco and Soto, unless they can get rid of Blanco. Get your offense elsewhere. there's not enough positions on the field to make up offensively for having blanco catch every day. I wouldn't want him everyday. Ideally he'd be gone. But if he's here, he can backup a rookie. i see...i didn't realize you wanted soto as a starter. It's far from ideal. But they have to let Barrett walk, if not trade him. Find offense elsewhere. They probably aren't going to find a solid everyday catcher elsewhere. So save money and take what you can get there with a guy who has shown some ability to hit, and shore up the rest of the lineup.

  10. Maybe they are going on seniority. What are they doing about the 40-man roster, he's not on it right?
  11. He should be the backup right now. At this point I'm thinking they should go with Soto and Blanco in 2008 (but I'd love to see Blanco leave). Make your order like this: 9 Soriano 13.00 3 Lee 13.00 6 Rodriguez 25.00 5 Ramirez 14.00 7 Murton 0.75 8 Pie 0.35 4 Patterson 0.35 2 Soto 0.35 Give ARod 5/125 to get out of the Bronx. (very favorable compared to his 3/81 remaining that he can opt out of)
  12. I realize that a thread like this is designed to create controversy, and get attention but its not like his .829 OPS prior to today or his .340 OBP is that terrible. Neither is a particularly good number either. I want something more from a 1st round pick than not terrible. I haven't been paying close attention to Colvin this year, but taking a look now and he's been completely unimpressive. Add in the piss poor year of Samardzija and last year's draft is looking quite shaky. Colvin's k/bb is now 40/8, with a line of .299/.333/.478. Hope to see the kid get it together soon.
  13. Is this supposed to be a good thing?
  14. I think they should go with Blanco and Soto, unless they can get rid of Blanco. Get your offense elsewhere.
  15. He did struggle offensively. But there are key differences, he was 3 years younger than Soriano is now, still in his prime. There was reasonable hope for improvement. Beltran also hit for average and drew walks, putting up a far better OBP than Soriano did up to that point, indicating a very solid approach at the plate that was not prone to the same type of problems that Soriano is prone to. In the season before he came to NY, Beltran had a k/bb of 101/92. Soriano, at his best last year, was 160/67. Beltran's isolated patience was far more indicative of a player with a good future. Furthermore, Beltran was a terrific natural CF. Soriano is a shaky converted corner OF with no fallback position. Beltran's contract will be run out at a much younger age as well. Bottom line: Beltran was better, signed younger, was much more likely to sustain quality play, added value via his defense - both in terms of quality and the position he played, and isn't guaranteed big money as deep into his career.
  16. He's on pace for 400 AB, so it wouldn't take much to get up to 450 PA. As you said, if there's an injury to Murton, Jones or Soriano, or if Lou suddenly decides he needs Floyd hitting 4th everyday, then it becomes a scary issue.
  17. I think if you added the CWS 3 best relievers (Jenks, Thornton, Logan) along with Buerhle and Garland, to the Cubs, they would have prevented significantly fewer runs. And you could probably benefit from Dye's power on the bench along with AJ taking over for Blanco (or starting). That team might be ahead of the Brewers by 2 games.
  18. They've got to rid themselves of Jones, Howry and Eyre, and probably one of Marquis or Dempster. With guys like Theriot, Fontenot and Patterson, they could save some more by dumping DeRosa. Then spend your money on a couple studs to help the remaining core, and fill in with youth everywhere else (maybe spend a million or two on bullpen help). And for god's sake don't even let Floyd come close to those qualifiers.
  19. I know it's early in his career, but I get the feeling that Samardzija's upside is a guy like Jon Garland. Pitches to contact and doesn't walk too many guys, but is somewhat durable and keeps his team in games, most of the time. (although I still don't know how Garland succeeds). It seems to me that he doesn't stand a chance of being a Brandon Webb type ground ball pitcher who still strikes some people out, even if it's only 7 per 9. Samardzija isn't striking anybody out, and while you have to expect him to need time to refine his game, he should be able to rack up some k's at this level. Even Garland struck out 6+ per 9 as a 19 year old in high A ball. I've read about his 50% change up stuff, but at some point you'd like to see the guy put up some decent numbers.
  20. Makes sense to me. Ramirez is a better hitter than Floyd or Soriano. Getting him up more frequently is a good idea. Floyd is no 3 or 4 hitter at this stage of his career though.
  21. This is a terrible argument. Why does the "earn the job" mantra only apply to Murton? He and Floyd have similar production this year, and Murton is younger, faster, healthier, cheaper, has more of a long term future, is a better defender, outproduced Floyd by a significant margin last year, and is probably better at video games too. All this is, is the all to familiar "default to the veteran", it's nonsense. Why gamble on being better when we can guarantee mediocrity with a Veteran? Mediocre might win the Cubs this division or the Wild Card and keep the masses happy for a couple of more years. Unfortunately the Cubs veterans can't even guarantee mediocrity.
  22. Anything can happen, but odds are it won't. The best teams usually win. What last year was was an unprecedented situation. The goal in baseball should be to create the best team possible, that means a team capable of 95-100 wins, because those are the teams that usually win it all. You don't give yourself much of a chance if you'd just trying to contend within a divison, no matter how weak.
  23. I guess it gives a new meaning to the thread title... She's a stripper. Odds are it's not very apropos. touchè No, you can't touch. Just look.
  24. Can't trade draft picks. If the Marlins want prospects there are many teams that can offer a better package than the Cubs can. They could always flip either or both of those guys later on. If they got Z and Ramirez they'd be able to try to get into the race. If they weren't back in by the deadline, they trade Zambrano for prospects. With Ramirez they can either trade him at the deadline or wait until the offseason. This trade would make their fan a lot happier. I would think it would have to be some sort of 3-way deal, where Florida never takes full control of Ramirez and Zambrano, because there's no way they want to be stuck with them.
