  1. 4/56 for a 31 year old player isn't all that small a deal. It's not 10/160 or anything, but it's a significant portion of a budget, especially when a team is already saddled with close to $20 mil a year with one terrible contract (Soriano). It's an incredibly small deal for an owner of a non-failing franchise to nix. I can't believe you'd pretend otherwse.
  2. That is not a good call at all. That's terrible ownership. My guess is Hendry just didn't want to spend the portion of his budget on Dunn. But if Ricketts didn't authorize it then he's a much worse owner than I suspected. He's a much worse owner than you suspected because he doesn't want to chance having two bad contracts for a year or two in exchange for going from a mediocre team to a slightly less mediocre team? If he's getting involved and nixing such relatively small deals as Dunn that is bad. Ricketts is a pretty dumb baseball fan. That is obvious. He doesn't know crap about the game. I'm hoping he'll hire the right people and let them make decisions. If he doesn't trust Hendry to make such a move then he shouldn't be GM. If he does trust him but nixed it because of the size of the contract, which wasn't out of line by any stretch of the imagination, then he's horrible.
  3. Since it's going to take firing Hendry to get it done and they don't want to replace him then I am going to say they aren't doing what it takes. The money issue is a little disappointing but somewhat expected since Hendry did such a poor job with all the money he was already allowed to spend.
  4. I'm not sure why you would expect unanimous support of the Bears. They are only 3.5 point favorites. They were 3.5 point dogs last week and many people picked them. It's perfectly reasonable to pick the Lions in an upset this week. It's almost a classic trap game, if New England was an NFC team. They're actually 5 point favorites. When did that happen? I think when it was reported that Stanton was starting. Maybe I was just looking at old data but I looked after it was first reported and still saw 3.5. I thought the Hill injury was out early and speculation about Stanton came well before it was announced. I'm glad my pick-em leagues are set at the lower number.

  7. If they wind up with Berkman than they probably need to sign a RH hitter to platoon with him, unless Baker is going to do that.
  8. I don't think they should be ashamed of themselves. If they didn't think he should be in the hall then maybe they are wrong. But they shouldn't be affected by how much the guy wanted to be in the hall or his health.
  9. I think the problem is what is the cutoff? Is it all about record? That's unfair when teams can double up on weak divisions for opponents. Should a 12-4 wild card really get homefield over an 11-5 division winner? I think they could make something say you need 10 wins to host a playoff game. But that's difficult.
  10. They really meant it when they said 20 words or less.
  11. After soliciting MSU, Cecil may have come to the realization that he may not get a prominent school to pony up cash.....and that his actions were putting a great risk on whether or not his son would be able to prove he is NFL draft worthy. oh that's adorable. I'm not an apologist for Cecil Newton's actions. He's a slimeball. He risked his son's career for some quick cash. He sells 'Jesus will save you' while living by a different set of moral values. Each additional school he solicited would have increased exposure, however. He knew that. I'm not saying he didn't solicit AU, but I hope he didn't, and there is no proof, currently, to suggest he did. There is plenty of proof to suggest he did. There's just not enough proof to prove he did.

  13. I wasn't gonna go anyway.
  14. I am cheering for the Eagles because I have them in Survivor (facing off against a guy with the Bears), but as far as the Bears are concerned I'd have no problem cheering against them tonight. I want as many losses as possible between GB/PHI/NYG/TB/NO
  15. I'm not sure how $14m is steep in price. I don't really trust the metrics for 1B, but Dunn is 31 and needs to keep hitting at the same rate at age 31-34 plus be at least an average 1B for that to be a worthwhile deal. He's far from a slam dunk to be worth that dollar amount. Sure, he's not a consistent force. But the Cubs don't have options. They have to get better at 1B. The 4 years is more risky than $14m per year. They don't have anywhere near the pitching SF had to get away with mediocrity in the lineup, but that is exactly what their plan is.
  16. He's worse than replacement level. And despite possible anecdotal evidence that pitchers "like" throwing to him, there's absolutely no evidence that they do any better throwing to him, or that the team enjoys any upside whatsoever to him being in any game.
  17. Agreed. This organization is dumb. Offering arb to Hill is beyond dumb. No one else will, but Hendry will be surprised when he accepts. Read page 1, not that type of arb I see. I still wonder why though....I was under the impression that Hill was gone. People assumed it when Chirinos was added to the roster, but that was premature speculation. You can't get rid of the two most vocal clubhouse personalities in the same year (Theriot was the first).
  18. There's only so much you can do to prevent a guy from facing RHP. Baker was at 152/72 in terms of LHP/RHP plate appearances last season. Maybe they can do a little better next year, but probably not a lot. Especially if he has to start for any extended period.
  19. 14.01.3.3 reads: Unless said player is on a national title contender.
  20. How did anybody justify a vote for Korea?
  21. Just finished with ATL, GB, PHI, STL, NO, NYG, bear on outside at 10-6. This would suck. I think the Bears need the Giants to take a dive down the stretch. Their garbage win vs Jacksonville hurt.
  22. Just the threads where the insufferableness of jersey prolongs some tangential argument to display his powers of futility. You are terrific.
