    Carlos Pena and Nick Johnson are both very likely to sign much, much cheaper deals - perhaps 1 year and less than $8-10 mil for both of them. For guys who very realistically could exceed Dunn's value, those would be very good deals. You are funny.

    Oh and even though it shouldn't need to be reiterated: It is really stupid to not sign a free agent because you think you might be able to sign a better one a year later. You don't assume you will ever have access to them. And they should have drafted Teixeira.

    The good thing is the cubs are loaded with impact bats in the minors. Hell that vitters guy might OPS 750 one day.

    This team will have problems contending for the playoffs because there's not enough talent and too many injury questions on this team, not just because a couple of guys are overpaid. Signing Adam Dunn alone isn't enough to change that and there just aren't enough good options out there to fix this team this year. Now maybe we invest $56 million into a 31 year old player, win 83 games and miss the playoffs by 2 games. And that's the best year we get out of that 31 year old player. Conversely, we potentially can spend $10 mil to fill first base and win 81 games. How is that 31 year old player a good investment for this team? You can make that crybaby scenario with any signing. The point is you try to win. You don't concede a season. Your nonsense about 31 year olds is crazy. I hate old players, but lower 30's are only scary for guy who already suck, catchers and middle infielders.

    Unless the Cubs were the Yankees there is no justification for thinking one second that they can just decide a year out they want a guy and go get him. You play the cards you are dealt, you don't pretend you know what the hands are going to look like in a year. And Ricketts better not be playing a part in any of that decision making.

    How is that even a camp? This isn't a freaking NFL team in salary camp hell, planning a 2 year turnaround under a new regime. If you aren't improving your baseball team every year you're getting worse. They are going to spend the money anyway, why the hell would anybody want it spent on more mediocrity, the way they did 2005 and 2006? It's absolutely insane thinking to toss away 2011 because a couple current guys are overpaid. Everybody has players that are overpaid. And nobody in this [expletive] division is any freaking good. Adam Dunn wouldn't even come close to hurting the payroll situation. This team has no bats in the minors capable of making an impact. Only an irresponsible idiot would pretend they can plan ahead to signing other people's free agents years in advance. This team needs bats now. They can't freaking hit.

    oh, i'm not saying it inhibits their chances of making the super bowl in any way. i just don't like the idea of everyone talking super bowl because we're 8-3. i haven't really heard much about the super bowl from the wisconsin media regarding the packers, nor have i heard much super bowl talk from packers players. so the jets are talking super bowl, that doesn't surprise me. rex ryan has a big mouth and isn't afraid to brag a little bit. i'm sure both he and they will be humiliated when the jets inevitably screw things up. Well, it's not like Pittsburgh stays hush about the Super Bowl, or the people around New England for that matter. It's better than "contend within the division talk".

    I thought Marinelli was supposed to be a "teacher" too though? it's not like being a teacher and having experience are mutually exclusive. i don't know how much marinelli has helped our defense in terms of production on the field, but the players seem to love him and they think he's helping them. as far as all this super bowl talk, it's embarrassing. everyone should be thinking super bowl, but not saying it. maybe it's the media bringing it up, but i still don't like hearing it after the team has a good month. The Jets were non-stop talking about the Super Bowl since last winter, coming off a 9-7 season and without doing anything impressive yet this year. What's wrong with it? Marinelli was a teacher with a ton of NFL experience. Lovie's original cast of teachers were a bunch of guys with limited college coaching experience.

This year's staff is so incredibly different from the early Lovie years. He insisted on teachers which basically meant inexperienced college coaches. It was a horrible idea. The only consistent part of the team has the same guy running it. But every other area has had a lot of turnover. Tice being an offensive line coach is pretty big. A legit OC in Martz with lots of NFL experience and success is important. Guys like Babich going back to less responsibility now with more NFL experience, and Marinelli moving into the DC role has to have helped. They've gone from one exteme of no experience to the other of a plethora of experience including guys coaching down a level or two from their peak experience.

    Forte has started 12 more games in a row than any other RB in the league? That's pretty remarkable and shows how short the shelf life of an NFL RB is. He hasn't been flashy, but he shows up..

    Can anyone explain why Martin was cut? He seemed like he was going to be a mainstay in the Dodgers lineup. His OPS dropped sharply the past two years, but he still seemed a good player. I wouldn't exactly say he was cut. They non-tendered him, right? He made $5m last year and I would assume he was going to look for a big raise this season. LA probably didn't want to spend that much of a guy who could be a declining catcher.

    You have no idea what you are talking about assuming when exactly the Cubs are going to become really good. It's a stupid assertion to make. This isn't the Rays poised to have a breakout year. You don't plan a team to get better three years from now.

    This is dumb. The Cubs just had their worst year. They were terrible. They have no impact bats in their system and are in dire need of them ASAP. They can win a division in 2011 without a hell of a lot of effort. But this paranoid absurdity about Dunn not being as good at 34 than he will be at 32, like every freaking other player in baseball and just like the ones you are advocating makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

    Different situations. Our ceiling next year is a borderline playoff team - whether we got Dunn or not. The next year would be our best shot to have a good Dunn and a good team. After that, the possibility gets much higher that we have two bad contracts hindering our upside as we should be a very competitive team. With Gonzalez, he should be very good to great for the first 2-3 years of the contract at least - which lines up right with when this roster should begin moving upward rapidly. Also, I'm not terrified of paying Dunn at 33-34 years old. I can understand why you would want him and he definitely makes us better, I just don't see the reward being higher than the risk that he tanks for a year or two. Terrified? That's kind of crazy. The guy has patience and power. Those things tend to last. He may struggled in his mid-30's, but if you are terrified of paying Dunn at 34 you have to be terrified of paying pretty much any free agent in baseball.

    But the important thing to remember is Chester Taylor is not a backup running back.

    4/56 for a 31 year old player isn't all that small a deal. It's not 10/160 or anything, but it's a significant portion of a budget, especially when a team is already saddled with close to $20 mil a year with one terrible contract (Soriano). It's an incredibly small deal for an owner of a non-failing franchise to nix. I can't believe you'd pretend otherwse.
