  1. I don't think it is. Martz has been adjusting all season long. They didn't run before because they couldn't. They've gotten a little better, to the point where guys are actually breaking long ones on occasion. They ran a lot in Carolina because they had to, and because they could. It's not like they came out against Buffalo and ran all day long. Cutler had more passing attempts against the Bills and Vikings than he did against Dallas and the Packers. Forte ran just 13 and 14 times the last two games. Taylor is just 6 and 9. I just don't see any reason to point to a stupid loss against the Redskins as the reason for more success now. It just doesn't hold up at all.
  2. Cutler moved around a fair amount before, so I'm not sure how. I think two things have happened, the line stabilized a little bit and Cutler regained his faculties. I think Martz has been a solid coordinator all year. They did some things yesterday that they did in the Dallas game. They've gotten better the longer in the system, as you would expect. The Washington game didn't change them. Lovie royally F'd up that game and Cutler was forced into trying to do too much late to make up for his head coach's incompetency. If any game had a lingering effect on the season it's the Giants game, since that may have cost them both Seattle and Washington as Cutler recovered from a hangover.

  4. I'm not acting like he never ran before. He's simply running more now. The stats don't lie. And I have a theory about the Washington game, as I think the butterfly effect applies in sports. You can't just go back and say we should have won that game and without considering the implications it may have had on the following games. Whether it would have been a different mindset or whatever, we'll never know. Thus we cannot assume the same outcomes. It is a ridiculous theory. We can assume they would have won if Lovie challenged the play. There is no reason not to. It's ridiculous to try and excuse a horrible coaching decision by pretending the butterfly excuse made it happen. Cutler ran 5 times twice in the three games before the Giants molested his skull. He's run 5 times three times in the seven games since the incident. He's always been a moderate scrambler. This year he's operating with probably the worst line he's ever had and if he has been running more, it is because of that, and not because of a butterfly in the Redskins game.
  5. http://deadspin.com/5707351/the-nfls-helmet+to+helmet-rules-are-absolutely-pointless I disagree with this guy's take on the Heath Miller hit. Yes, it should have been flagged under the way things are being called now. But it was bang bang, and not unique in the defenseless receiver thing. It probably could have and should have been avoided, but I've seen worse examples. The refs should have thrown a flag, but they can't catch them all. There is nothing wrong with fining guys with these hits and trying to step up the effort to prevent them. You cannot expect players to adjust immediately and stop with their head hunting poor tackling technique styles overnight. You are going to have situations where a hit is not called on the field. That doesn't mean you should stop trying to enforce the rule.
  6. And doesn't it seem a little more likely that he's just back to doing what he was doing before after taking some time to recover from the Giants manhandling for a few weeks? The Washington game didn't change how Cutler played.
  7. That isn't the first time that Lovie has supposedly blown up at the defense.
  8. I saw him running around against Detroit the first time, as well as Dallas and Green Bay. I don't see how the Washington game supposedly changed what he did with his feet. It's getting pretty ridiculous to pretend that Washington loss had to happen in order to change the team.
  9. Yeah, that's my thinking towards him. His career window is likely relatively short enough as it is, and with the Cubs seemingly going with the rebuilding route for the foreseeable future, it really seems like Soto's value to the team would come more from the nice prospects package he could net them in a trade sooner rather than later. That's the problem with this half assed approach they appear to be using. If they are going to tank 2011, at least do it in a way to significantly improve your chances for 2012-2013. There's no point in wasting things like Marmol/Soto/Casto's still affordable seasons while waiting for other contracts to leave. By the time they can afford others they will be offering big raises to new guys and still won't be able to go after the big time free agents. Don't pay somebody to take Fukudome. Deal Wells, Marmol, Byrd, Colvin and maybe even Soto. Take your lumps now instead of prolonging them for the next 3 years.
  10. I like STL wasting their money, since they have limited resources and a budget that can be affected by overspending and waste. The Yankees just seem to raise the price for everybody else and take a heck of a lot of supply off the market that the Cubs should be in on. The Cubs need an elite guy or two, since they can't seem to develop their own. But they have to settle for overpaying guys like Soriano instead of being in on the real superstars.
  11. I'd guess the Cubs didn't want to trade for and then sign the guy, and only got involved late when they realized a deal was going to happen with somebody. They also might just want their name out there on big guys while settling for the mediocre 3rd tier guys they were after from the start.
  12. At first I found it annoying, but then decided it's nice to have the option of watching a game just about every night for nearly a month. Yes, but I thought we couldn't play too many bowls after the 1st because it interferes with studying and what not. The teams themselves are only playing one game. It's the adding of 3-4 more games that is the problem.
  13. Not really. He had one nice return.
  14. Right after the early 3rd quarter fumble. I want to say it involved chasing Stanton out of bounds, but not really sure.
  15. That's another thing that changed after the loss against Washington. Not sure if it was planned or not, but it's definitely working. How is that a change after the Washington loss? He's been doing it all year and really his entire career.
  16. Because if I wanted Lyle Overbay or Adam LaRoche, I'd just sign them. My way is cheaper. You think so? He's in the middle of arbitration years and has racked up some relatively larger RBI totals despite his generally poor hitting. I'd guess he's a lock to get a fairly large raise this season and then without any realistic 1B in the pipeline he will play a lot and be a near lock for another raise next season even without being good.
  17. Didn't really start drinking until after the game, but if my memory holds I think the players who stood out in a good way were Cutler, Bennett, Peppers, Idonije, Gould, Manumanamama and Forte. Moore was a little up and down. Maynard was probably decent. The linebackers were disappointing. Did Tommie Harris play? I rememeber seeing Harrison and Toeaina, but not doing anything special.
  18. I would dance around if they dealt Colvin in a package for a true impact bat, but not somebody who might be an average first baseman if things go well.
  19. Reggie Golden getting some love. Where's he set to play next year?
  20. It seems to me like Keith and Seabrook have been a major part of the problem. If that is true, then the hope for improvement should be realistic.
  21. Just want to point out that the Hawks did outshoot them 32-18 in that Vancouver loss, despite losing 3-0. Bobby Lu was pretty good in the game. Most times you win that game. That said, they didn't win so I agree it counts again them. Yes, I saw about 2 periods and noticed they were outshooting them. But they didn't seem to be particulary dangerous shots and the breakdowns continued. That's going to happen, but it's happening too often.
  22. Is Loney even any better than a Colvin experiment at 1st? Now if they wanted to trade Either that would be a different story. I was just looking at his info and thinking I wouldn't want to go past offering Colvin for him. But really don't have much interest.
  23. Looked too quickly at that, thought it was more like 15th.
  24. Disappionting weekend for the Blackhawks. Another regulation loss in a game that wasn't close. They have 12 regulation losses already this year, tied for third most in west. And only 5 eastern teams have more. And now Kane is out for a while. The team is still above average in scoring, but below average in goals against. Special teams hasn't been a problem. They probably can't count on either goalie to carry them for any period of time, so the defense really has to start stepping it up. Otherwise this team may eventually struggle to make the playoffs. They can't keep letting games go by without picking up at least one point. It would be nice to go on a 8 or 9 of 10 type streak to put some distance between them and the bottom tier. But they won't do that if they keep losing in regulation with such regularity.
