  1. I think the main reason is promos. First off, radio broadcasts suck since they spend a good 30% of the time presenting you the subway 3rd down of the game followed by a Meineke sack and a KMart punt. At the same time, TV broadcasters promote shows coming up on Fox/CBS, and that is why they pay so much money for the rights to the games. If it were to be done, the networks would demand that customers pay a huge fee for the right, to discourage widespread distribution and offset potential ad decreases. That sounds right. Although.......for the amount of money we fork out for NFLST, one would think it buys a little leeway on that type of thing. The networks would rather everybody just watch the one game broadcasted in their area. They don't want you flipping channels.

  3. The Blackhawks had an epic party Sunday night at Lavo, a club at the Palazzo Las Vegas resort, which featured an unidentified rookie who spent the evening wearing a replica of Iron Man's armor. In what apparently was the team's annual rookies party, in which first-year players split the tab, the Hawks enjoyed a 6-liter bottle of champagne that cost $35,000.
  4. Well, a Super Bowl win has a long carry over effect. I'd be willing to put up with a .500 record for three years after winning one. It would be awesome if they could pull off playing tought with him and keeping his demands in check, but if they do win (which they won't) the pressure will be enormous, 100x the ridiculous pressure they got for not extending him right away last time. The key is not going 5 years. Give him a huge raise for 2011 with 2 years added on and if they do take that step back it's a lot easier to can him. But the key is if they make the playoffs and lose do not extend him right away, unless he'll take a one year extension at no more than current salary. Talk extension after the CBA is done.
  5. http://withleather.uproxx.com/2010/11/finally-a-game-with-no-announcers This is pretty cool. NFL Network is going to re air the Jets/Bengals game on Friday using just the audio from 15 players/coaches who will be miked during the game. It would be awesome to do that live, but I think you'd need at least an hour delay for director/producer to have it make sense.
  6. Obviously not, but he and King are probably the two biggest.
  7. That's simply not true. Tampa Bay? I've seen them below Tampa on many lists. They've been behind a crappy Oakland team and the rest of that weak AFC West as well. I'd like to see these lists. Tampa Bay didn't even have their highlights shown on SportsCenter after shutting out the Niners. I know that's not exactly a big game, but a team did move to 7-3 because of it. I think most of the general public just seems to think of the Bucs as a joke that really do not do anything well where people know the Bears can at least play defense and special teams at a high level. That's nice and all, but this season has been going on for a while now and lists are updated every week. Many times Tampa has been ranked ahead of Chicago. A couple weeks ago Simmons had the Bears ranked 28 while Tampa was upper half. After week 10, Don Banks had the Bears 16 and Tampa 13. After week 11 it was Bears 14 Tampa 11. I've seen this is multiple places. Not all of them, but multiple.
  8. Winning the Superbowl is still not reason to give Lovie an extension, IMO. Like you said, last time he took the Bears to the Superbowl, it didn't start any sort of consistent winning. So, why extend him when history shows you could just go 7-9 again next year? With 1 more year on his deal, the decision doesn't have to made this year at all, and shouldn't by any means. Bears go deep into the playoffs, and start next season 7-3, then talk extension. This is not even close to a rush situation no matter how much they win this year. While I see no reason to rush, a Super Bowl victory is obviously a reason to extend him. He's only signed through next season, and a super bowl winning coach doesn't work in lame duck fashion. If all they do is make the playoffs then I don't talk extension until after the CBA is finalized, and even then it has to be done without a raise, because he certainly hasn't earned one. Haugh is claiming he's done more with less this year which is absolutely absurd. This team is talented enough to make the playoffs. They are light on the line and WR. But they've spent big money on big time players, Peppers, Urlacher and Briggs are huge investments. Not to mention Harris and Tillman. And they have gone out and acquired a big time QB.

  10. I just listened to it and Simmons said that he thought they would be getting respect now from people (why I'm not sure). And Sal when he said the line "they do get a ton of respect" was talking about the Eagles because he then mentioned that the Bears are the flip side of that and the home team should normally be favored in this situation. No, you are wrong. You aren't paying attention to context. They were specifically talking about the Bears getting respect. It was not "now they will". Simmons has been baffled about the Bears getting more respect than he has given them all season. He guessed they would be significant dogs in Buffalo and was shocked they were favored. He throught they would be huge dogs against Minnesota and had no idea why they were only like 1 or 1.5 point dogs. He's called them a bottom three team in the league at points this year, and after briefly saying they were good thought they were a horrible team again midseason. He correctly guessed the line as philly -3, but said because Vegas keeps giving the Bears more credit than he gives them figured it would be something like Bears -2. The point is he's completely oblivious to his own idiocy. He's the one who has been giving them negative respect, and therefore when Vegas surprises him with a line, it's because he has no clue.
  11. Why is there an article in the Trib that says "Not the time to extend Lovie's contract"? What moron has suggested it is the time? They have won 7 games. They won 7 games last year. This is not an accomplishment worth rewarding. Making the playoffs is not reason enough for an extension. If he wins the Super Bowl, go ahead, but he's already signed through next season and the last time they gave him an extension his team did nothing but disappoint for three straight seasons.
  12. I haven't seen that one yet. Just 3, and 3.5. CBS pick-em is using 3.5 and Philly is getting 75% of the vote, so it wouldn't surprise me to see it go to 4 or 4.5.
  13. On his podcast Simmons said that he thought the line should be Philly by 3, but that since Chicago is getting so much respect he is guessing Chicago by 2.5. And Cousin Sal says "they do get a ton of respect'. What in the world is he talking about? They are consistently the lowest rated team with their record by most people. They were 2 point dogs last week and won by 16. They were dogs to Minnesota at home when the Vikings were mid-freefall. Why would you think Chicago would be favored?
  14. DON'T ASK ME WHY I LISTEN. Bill Simmons in his pick the lines podcast with Cousin Sal: BS: Yeah, cause, I don't trust the Jags on the road. CS: That's a little high. BS: That's a little high, but, I like the Jags, that could be an upset pick.

  16. Raisin's point is, if a job Harbaugh wants isn't there, he'll just stay at Stanford until he finds the right situation. He'll be in demand nearly at the Nick Saban level for colleges, I'd say. Yes, I see that point, but I disagree with the notion that he'll have his pick of the litter. His options are going to be limited whenever he does come up. A large percentage of the NFL doesn't trust college coaches. And a lot of other organizations in constant need of a coach aren't anymore attractive than Carolina (Buffalo, Oakland, Detroit, Cincy). The guys who can pick where they go are guys who have won Super Bowls. I don't think Harbaugh can afford to be super choosy if his goal is to coach in the NFL. Although I do think he can avoid Carolina this offseason. As young as he is he might as well wait until after the CBA shakes out.
  17. 15% of the season: meaningless. In the NBA, it is meaningless. In a sport that is all about hype where all the hype was all about a record setting pace of wins, them losing 6 out of 14 games isn't meaningless.
  18. He's still not at the Nick Saban level of being able to call where he goes if/when he goes pro. He's got very limited NFL coaching experience, and despite the playing experience there is a big enough cloud over college coaches in the NFL that he can't have his pick of the litter. I do think he'd be able to get something better than Carolina. However, with the CBA doom pending, most people thing coaching turnover is going to be at a minimum this year, and most jobs will be filled with the internal safe candidate, like Frazier and Garrett, if the owners can justify those hires at all. How many jobs will be out there?
  19. While that certainly may be true, the other side is also true. If a coach wins at Dallas he will be a star on the national level. Also, Jerry will pay him well and pay for the players as well. The Dallas job for a coach is a hard one to judge. It depends on the person. Dallas is a job where you should have enough talent to win and enough resources to do whatever you want and it's the largest stage to do that as well. On the other hand, there's Jerry Jones. He's both a positive and a negative, depending on how you view things. I think a lot depends on the demeanor of the coach. For example, if you were looking to coach a team would you choose Carolina where you have to completely rebuild or Dallas where you just need to right the ship and deal with Jones? Rebuilding isn't that tough and everybody who thinks he can be an NFL coach thinks he can do it. However, most guys don't think they can put up with Jones. He's a net negative. Parcells gave it a go but didn't accomplish anything. Since Johnson left he's had one non-joke head coach. For a guy who is willing to spend like he does, that says it all right there.

  23. Not 1972!!! Probably easier when everybody has 2+ losses by week 11. Didn't every team have 2 losses by like week 7 this year? Yeah, it was a while ago, dont' remember.
  24. Neither do I, but I've heard talk about them building air-conditioned stadiums. Seriously. The video of all their proposed stadiums was pretty fancy. Knowing nothing about Qatar at all. Are they capable of this financing without running into the trouble Dubai is in now? Don't know for sure but I am of the impression Qatar is a more stable oil/gas power, while Dubai ventured out. I think they can certainly finance it without a problem, but oil/gas is a volatile market and has crashed in the past.
