  1. I tend to believe the country as a whole cares more about soccer (on a world stage) than ESPN often makes us think.
  2. I'd still rank 3-2 over portugal and 2-0 over Mexico above that, maybe even 2-1 vs. Columbia from 1994. Just because those are the World Cup and this is the Confederations Cup. Maybe the Portugal result, but I'd argue this means just as much because Spain is a much better squad than anyone they've beaten in years, and Spain was taking this cup as seriously as any.
  3. That has to be the biggest result from US Soccer in...longer than I can remember.
  4. I understand that they are equations, but the process doesn't make sense to me. The author is essentially making a substitution to eliminate a variable in the equation. I'll try to do the same process, except showing each and every step, and then see if it makes sense. We have two equations: Eq 1: 1.8 * OBP2 + SLG2 = 1.12 Eq 2: -OBP2 - SLG2 = -0.9 Step 1: The second equation can be rewritten like so: -OBP2 - SLG2 = -0.9 -OBP2 = SLG2 - 0.9 SLG2 = 0.9 - OBP2 Then we can substitute the right half of that equation (0.9 - OBP2) in for SLG2 in the first equation, and we get: 1.8 * OBP2 + (0.9 - OBP2) = 1.12 Finally, simplify the equation: 1.8 * OBP2 - OBP2 = 1.12 - 0.9 0.8 * OBP2 = 0.22
  5. It was always against the rules, it just wasn't enforced at all prior to 2003.
  6. Here's a decent article by Bill Simmons outlining the various "eras" of baseball and what was taken advantage of in each one: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=4268999 Really, there wasn't really a single time in the history of baseball where you can say players didn't have some sort of unfair advantage over the competition, and those players exploited those advantages.

  8. EqA is more accurate as a complete measure of offensive capability. OPS's biggest flaw is that it essentially treats OBP and SLG evenly, even though the scales of each are completely different (highest possible OBP is 1, while highest possible SLG is 4). This causes the statistic to undervalue OBP in relation to SLG. Some pundits are making use of an adjusted OPS, which adds a factor to OBP (I've seen anywhere from 1.4x to 1.8x) to make it more comparable to SLG.
  9. Vazquez is a solid number 3 starter, but you keep playing him up like hes some kind of ace. We can get some runs off him, and hoepfully Demp can find the K zone. Vazquez is 28th in MLB in VORP and 34th in ERA+. He's been some kind of ace.
  10. Bogey on 15 (probably the toughest hole on the course) leaves Phil one shot off the lead. Six players still playing within 3 shots of the lead, so it should go down to the wire here. Tiger is currently the clubhouse leader at even par, 4 shots off the current play lead.
  11. Phil just birdied 12 to go to 2 under, par for the day, good enough to be 2 shots off the lead.
  12. Henrik Stenson is now currently the clubhouse leader at 1 over. If I were him, at the rate things are going, I'd probably stick around and see what happens.
  13. Phil birdies the 9th to get back to 1-under for the tournament, tied for 4th place, 4 shots back. Also, some fellow by the name of Woods just barely missed an eagle putt on 13, but the birdie puts him at even par for the tournament, 5 shots back with 5 to play.
  14. Barnes just racked up his 4th bogey in 7 holes, and he's now 4 under for the tournament.
  15. Yeah, both leaders are 2 over so far today, but Mickelson took a penalty stroke on 6 (his fourth of the tournament, which is hard to do when only one of the holes has water), and bogeyed 7, so he's still 5 back. Hunter Mahan is all of a sudden within 2 shots, though. EDIT: Wait, no, make that 3 back as Mahan bogeyed 8 after blowing a birdie putt 10 feet past the hole and missing the comebacker.

    Week 11

    Man, my defense sucked yesterday.
  17. Holy crap, the US actually made up a 6 goal differential to Italy?
  18. Seems odd that they would do something like this rather than just reseed everybody starting with Federer at No. 1. IMO, the big winner here ends up being Andy Roddick, who just got del Potro instead of Nadal in his quarter, and will now be able to avoid all of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic until the finals.

    Week 11

Two weeks back, I asked if I could switch out a guy who wasn't playing for a FA that was and Juan said it was OK. So I picked up Michael Bourn and dropped Chris Duncan. After I did that, though, popular opinion was that it was against the spirit of a weekly roster and shouldn't be allowed, so I benched Bourn the rest of the week (which ended up being one day) and just used him the next week.
  20. There are three things I see wrong with this potential deal: 1) If the Royals are in fact ready to wave the white flag, it would make absolutely no sense to trade away a player still under organizational control for a couple years in return for older, more expensive options. 2) The Nats may need pitching, but they don't need stopgap bullpen retreads, or to add salary for the sake of salary matching deals. If they're not getting actual prospects, there's no reason to make a deal. 3) The Cubs would essentially be getting the best 2 players in a 10 player deal, and giving up no players that belong on a major league team while at the same time aren't prospects. That just isn't ever going to happen. So, besides the Royals waving a white flag to get older and more expensive, the Nats picking up other teams' retreads and trash to take their shot to win this year, and the Cubs getting 2 players for nothing of value, this deal makes sense.
  21. So, the Indians are coming into town, and odds are that Kerry Wood will pitch against the Cubs, quite possibly in a save situation. If that happens, how will you react?
  22. Saudis have to be kicking themselves for that one. All they needed was a home victory against them. Of course, Saudi Arabia is likely to win the playoff anyway against New Zealand.

    Week 11

Yeah, maybe a bit much, but it managed to shore up two of my weakest areas (other than 1B), and I really like Cruz.
  24. This isn't an I-told-you-so thread, this is a thread where something is brought up in hindsight to stick it to everyone who hoped for the best for a Cub hitter this year. Of course, he's still been the Cubs most valuable hitter this year, even with a significant 2-week slump.
  25. So do I. I can't stand these games against the White Sox. I wish they'd do away with Interleague play. I wish they'd do it similar to the NFL, one division per year, set schedule. None of these stupid "rivalry" series. I also kind of wish both leagues were balanced with 15 teams each, with an interleague series going on at all times.
