  1. Correlation between winning and turning double plays: minimal. Been a real strange year, eh? It's certainly been difficult to get an accurate gauge of where this team's at with all the turnover due to injuries, suspensions and ineptitude.

  3. They probably would have played one game anyway because of the timing of the bye week. The second game is likely because the Big Ten schedule ends so early as it is. I couldn't imagine them playing their last game on November 14. At Cincinnati and home against Fresno St. Not exactly taking it easy either Yeah, it should be quite the non-con schedule next year with Mizzou, Cincy and Fresno State (along with the annual intrastate matchup, this year with Illinois State). Of course, the conference schedule misses Iowa and Wisconsin this year, so they likely needed a boost in SOS.

  5. If his weight is under control, there's no way he'll be available at 16.
  6. I'm also glad Huet ended his season on a good game, so there won't necessarily be violent opposition to keeping him on as the #1 next season. The Hawks did better than many expected even coming into the playoffs, and did about as well as expected against Detroit. Stealing another game to force a game 6 probably would have exceeded many expectations for this series, but it just didn't work out. Too many giveaways and odd-man rushes.
  7. Hey, the offense has the same two things it depended on when it won the World Series in 2005: smartball and Scott Podsednik.
  8. The Cubs are currently without their #1 starter and best hitter. Of course they're going to struggle. Now is not the time to make a panic move.

    Peavy

How does this make sense for the White Sox? It's as if they're going for broke this year, but not addressing the league-worst offense in the process.
  10. Peavy should be just what the White Sox need to improve that league-worst offense.

    Week 7

Bad night of managing all around, as Haren's start is cancelled from rain, and I leave two 18.5 point starts on the bench. Now, even to get 7 starts I need to bring up Detwiler.
  12. I rest my case. And I posted this before Aaron Miles made a pinch hit appearance in the 9th inning. And before Soriano's walkoff single, too.
  13. I've said all along I think the Blackhawks could beat anyone but Detroit in a playoff series, and I still think so. Detroit is an awful matchup for the Hawks, to the point where if they can push it to 6 games I'd be surprised.
  14. I'd probably choose one of Evan Longoria, Hanley Ramirez, Tim Lincecum, Albert Pujols, or David Price. I really like Zack Greinke too, but it's difficult to say whether he's finally turned it on, or he's just had a hot month.
  15. Canes-Pens, eh? I'm sure that'll be riveting.
  16. At this rate, the inning is going to get capped off with a Theriot GS or something.
  17. I think if you asked anyone to predict the 2009 Cubs opening day bullpen on the day after the Cubs were eliminated from the 2008 playoffs, I'm pretty sure nobody would have come up with Kevin Gregg, Luis Vizcaino, David Patton, and Aaron Heilman.
  18. I think theirs was the 4th series to end, after Detroit, Vancouver and Boston. Two of the series went 7, and Anaheim/SJ and Pittsburgh/Philly weren't decided until the next day.
  19. So, who had the Hawks as the first team to close out their second round series? :)
  20. Here's one for Bears fans: Starting QBs since the 1985 Super Bowl
  21. Here's a tough one: MLB Retired Numbers I got 60 of them, and all the Cubs, at least.
  22. I fear a serious letdown, at least early in the game tonight. I just hope they come out as strong as they did in Game 5.
  23. I don't know that I'd put MLB on par with the NFL. I love baseball, but the NFL is just lapping other sports in interest right now, I think. Maybe in Tennessee. :) I put them on the same level because, for the most part, their seasons don't overlap, meaning the average sports fan can be completely dedicated to both MLB and NFL. Also, a lot of this tiering was in relation to its Olympic counterpart. MLB and NFL are pro sports that don't even have an Olympic counterpart they're so insignificant in comparison. NBA and PGA golf have Olympic counterparts, but certainly not important on the same level. NASCAR is a different beast altogether, and maybe it's more significant to the rest of the country than I'm thinking, but it's definitely not big around here.
  24. That kind of confirms something I've been saying for awhile: people like to say the NHL doesn't belong in the "Big Four," but the NBA is slipping itself. Really, it's more a series of several tiers: NFL MLB, college football NBA, college basketball NHL, golf, soccer Other niche sports I'm not sure where I'd put NASCAR in there, and I may be wildly wrong on a few placements, but the principle of tiers is sound, imo. We're talking US only and not globally, right? If so, I'd probably go more along the lines of NFL, MLB NBA, College Football, College Basketball, PGA Golf when TIger is involved NHL, NASCAR, World Cup Soccer, Olympics MLS, MMA, AFL, Rodeo, Poker, PBA, WNBA, etc
