  1. Credit their scouting, what puzzles me is the Cubs scouting wasn't able to observe or figure out Chris Young can't hit a breaking ball. Hell, from game 2 alone they should have able to determine he can't hit a breaking ball. After the 3R HR, didn't Hart or Marmol make him look pathetic with sliders? So, with the results of game 2 in hand, how do you start him off in game 3? With a FB of course!!!!!
  2. If the Cubs being in middle of the pack offensively are mediocre, at best, what are the Diamondbacks with their offense? Sure, the Cubs got beat but, lets not kid ourselves that the Diamondbacks were or are the better team. I'll give some credit to them for beating the Cubs however, they in large part were fortunate that the streaky Cub offense of May decided to show up. Cubs had what, 30+ LOB? and went 1-30+ RISP and either missed, popped-up or dribbled countless hanging breaking balls and badly located fastballs. Colorado' got a very good chance to expose the fraud that is the Diamondbacks, that trick of opposition whiffing on every mistake and freezing up with RISP is not going to work again. By the way, does anyone know why the Cubs kept throwing fastballs for strikes to Young? He can't hit a breaking ball to save his life and Cubs kept throwing him the only pitch he can hit - smart.
  3. The MO for tonight is the polar opposite, they're facing guy who's stuff is mediocre to begin with and if you let him, will walk himself into trouble 95BB in 190+IP.
  4. Nah. 1984 game 5. I was a wreck. I was in college, watching in my apartment, and when the grounder went through Durham's legs, I walk over tothe kitchen, picked up a chair and repeatedly smashed it against the wall until it was a pile of toothpicks. Never said a word, and nor did my roomate. I remember that Sunday afternoon, how in the hell did San Diego, a team with four less wins than the Cubs get home field advantage? - that 2-3 format was a load of crap.
  5. I found Darling' comparison of the Diamondbacks to 1988 Dodgers pretty funny and way off. That team managed to outscore its opponents (628-544) and had three times as many good starters (Hershiser 23-8, Leary 17-11, Belcher 12-6 all with ERA' under 3) as these Diamondbacks.
  6. Tonight' game thread has yet to be posted but, the name of the game tonight has to be patience. Davis has issued 95 BB in 192 and 2/3 IP, if you take a few pitches you'll get some base runners and get ahead in the count which means you're more likely to get something good to hit. If the Cubs take this approach they'll crush Davis tonight.
  7. Last night' game wasn't an unexpected result but, if the Cubs lose this series I'll be extremely disappointed. I could almost accept the playoff losses in '84, '89, '98 and '03 in each case, the Cubs lost to an evenly matched ('84,'89) or better team ('98,'03) however, in this series the Cubs are facing an inferior team. I've heard the better team usually wins a playoff series hopefully, it holds true for this series.
  8. Bingo!!! My wife has asked about it, told her what Bartman did was immaterial to outcome of that inning, the big play was Gonzalez botching that potential DP grounder.
  9. As simplistic as it sounds the key may be throwing strikes, if Zambrano and the rest of the Cubs staff consistently throw strikes they'll win the series. Without a few BB's to help them out I don't believe the Diamondbacks are capable pounding their way to runs.
  10. I don't if they'll dominate but, they'll win the series. The Phillies are little more consistent on the road as a result, they've got a pretty good chance at getting one in Colorado. True, the Rockies pitching has improved but, the fact remains they're still a team that' awesome in Colorado and not so on the road: Home: .298,.372,.480 BA,OBP,SLP Road: .261,.336,.395 Compared to the Phillies splits: Home: .280,.357,.475 BA,OBP,SLP Road: .268,.350,.442
  11. A scout' take on the Diamondbacks, I found the comments about Webb somewhat surprising given everyone' falling all over themselves with praise for Webb: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-071002dbacksscout,1,4234825.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  12. If one looks hard enough these kind of arguments can be made to make almost any team look bad. What of the might Diamondbacks? Remove their 24-9 record vs the NL East and they don't sniff the playoffs.
  13. Barrett and his inability to catch the ball may have cost the Padres the game but, what the heck happen to Trevor Hoffman? Two consecutive blown saves? When was the last time he did that? I was rooting for the Padres in the hopes of a Cubs-Padres NLCS in which, I envisioned the Cubs coming back from being down 3-1. In the most painful way possible - game 7(assuming the Cubs are the home team), down a run, bottom of the ninth, Cubs down to their last strike, Theriot beats gets on with a infield single. Derek Lee comes up, gets down 0-2 and then hits a HR into the RF basket. Revenge for 1984.
  14. Even Lou hasn't done much of it, I'd like to see some hitting and running vs Webb. Its pretty difficult to elevate the ball, might as well try to use the gb's to your advantage.
  15. Here's hoping Marquis is not on the playoff roster, the Cubs wouldn't be here without his contributions but, he's clearly done for the season.
  16. Playoff beard? Thought that was more of an NHL tradition...
  17. That has a funny way of turning around in the playoffs.
  18. Phillies being shut out by Matt Chico thru 5 - wow.
  19. Why?! Is some sort of a senority factor at work here? For, if its based upon quality Froemming would be no where near a playoff series. He's cleary one of the worst, if not the worst Umpire in Baseball anyone with eyes can see that. Got to keep that crew away from San Diego after what happened last weekend. That's understandable however, Froemming' crew should not be working the playoffs at all.

  21. Couldn't happen to a better team or franchise for that matter, I'm throughly enjoying it.
  22. What a night, Cubs about to be NL Central Champs and Mets start to put the finishing touches on one of the biggest choke jobs of all time - in Ron' words couldn't happen to a better team.
  23. Perhaps, the best result of the Marlin series is we'll quite probably never see Trachsel pitch in a Cubs uniform again.
  24. What proved to be costly was their inability to get the non-quality hitters in Marlin lineup out i.e., everyone save for Ramirez, Hermidia and Cabrera. I don't qualify Uggla as good hitter, sure he's got a lot of power for a 2B but, there nothing else he does well.
