The latest article on the Cubs Winter Meetings strategy has recently been posted on Cubs.com. The title and subtitle are "Cubs aim to adjust top of the order: With Furcal a Dodger, club ready to examine other options."

All of this makes perfectly good sense. The outrageous part of the article: a photo with Neifi swinging away, and captioned: "Neifi Perez was capable (bold mine), but the Cubs hope to secure a new leadoff batter this year."

In what was was Neifi F. Perez capable at leading off? Was it his stellar OBP, his lightning fast speed, or his ability not to clog the bases so that D. Lee couldn't work his magic???

These staff writers at MLB.com are sometimes a joke. Just thought y'all would agree, and could use the laugh.

See, that's the problem with having Cedeno at SS. He will won't be starting!! Sorry, but we deserve better than Neifi Perez.

He will won't be starting? That sounds about right actually.

You were probably all too stunned by the Neifi comment to go any further and see this little tidbit.

According to Hendry, Todd Walker is in the picture, too, but other teams have expressed an interest in the second baseman.

Don't trade him, Jim. Please don't.

apparently when you don't get who you want to lead off, instead of risk being made look like an idiot when the in house option does better, you trade him...

That makes sense, yet it doesn't. HMMMMMM. What we have here is a paradox. :-k

Dave van Dyck[/url]"]Settling the middle infield

Furcal was supposed to play shortstop with veteran Neifi Perez with young Ronny Cedeno sharing time at second base, probably with Jerry Hairston also in the mix. And now?

Well, everything is intertwined, so acquiring Pierre could mean Cedeno is the starting shortstop, Perez and Hairston become the second basemen and Todd Walker is used as trade bait.

SEASON OVER

That is the worst possible scenario for the MI right now.

Hey! If he was leading off he would hit into less Double Plays!

I wouldn't be so sure about that. He would have Zambrano and Prior --- collective .288 OBP --- hitting in front of him. Given Neifi's DP/PA ratio; that's 3 DP's right there.
