I found this tidbit on http://www.rotoworld.com

Free agent Kyle Farnsworth may soon be offered a three-year deal to return to the Tigers.

The Yankees are another team rather interested in Farnsworth. It looks like he'll end up getting at least $5 million per year. Nov. 27 - 1:27 pm et

Wow....that's pretty decent money for a gutless, choking dog.

Wow. Makes Hendry look like a genius for the Eyre and Howry signings.

Those probably influenced Farn's price

Oh I'm sure they did, but I'd definitely rather have Eyre or Howry at their cost than Farnsworth at 5. If a GM gives the Farns 5 million dollars, Hendry will look very good in the contracts that he gave out to Eyre and Howry.

Farnsworth is younger, has better stuff, and has better or similar success to the other two. Plus Farns has the added benefit of being a closer this year, which Howry and Eyre did not. I'd say that they are comparable deals.

Holy crap, one post before we get a sarcastic gutless choking dog reference!?

Seriously, let it die.

Aside from the "choking dog" comments......and the he'd be great "if" (insert almost anything)...the fact is that in important spots the guy has been terrible. Yes, he has decent stats over the course of his career....but he'd be the LAST guy I would want to see with the ball with a crucial game on the line....as witnessed byt his stellar performance this fall. The Farnsworth love is really puzzling to me.....did the football tackle really endear him that much? IF the Cubs were 6 outs form the series (ouch) and there were men on base.....would you really want to see Farnsworth in a Cubs uniform taking the bump?

For every time Farnsworth has blown up in the playoffs, there's at least one instance where he shut the door. Yes, I'd be comfortable with him, though I'm not advocating signing him at that cost.

Furcal is as much a drunk as Farnsworth, but we're welcoming him onto the team right?

Just curious - how do you know how much of a drunk either are and just what is your definition of a "drunk"?

How does $5M for Farns make Hendry look good? Hendry is the primary culprit in creating these ridiculous prices, so it seems silly to me to cite the byproduct of his stupidity as a cause for praise. Edited by frostwyrm

Howry > Farnsworth.

Eyre > Farnsworth.

Considering their ages and length of the deals I will humbly disagree.

I agree with your disagree....circle gets the square!!!

I don't understand how anyone who thinks the Howry signing was bad can think that signing Farnsworth for $15,000,000 over three years is anything close to a good idea. Farnsworth has had good years and bad years, just like countless other relievers. He will probably have both good and bad years in the future. Paying $5 million for a relief pitcher, unless he is one of the few consistent relievers, is a terrible idea.

Why not take a shot at Farns for 5mil? I mean really he was here for years and we really didn't try him out as closer which is surprising because Dusty chose a faltering Hawkins over an unproven Farns. Bad idea to not even give him a shot. He got his shot last year and he did good at the closer role until the playoffs.

I'm a huge backer of Farnsy, as I've pretty well documented over time.

I think giving him a $5M / yr contract is pretty laughable, though it has nothing to do with believing him to be a "choker" or gutless, or whatever.

For one thing, I'm not sure he would want to come back. Plus I sincerely doubt Hendry will be spending any more money on the bullpen. And it would make Hendry look pretty stupid to bring Farns back at three times what he made with the Cubs after cutting him loose like he did.

I think the chances of Kyle being a Cub again are about 0%.

No, he would never come back here. I was speaking hypotheticaly as a GM of a MLB team.

Sure, but that was only for one year. He'd spent plenty of time in the bullpen and put up similar numbers in some years and terrible numbers in other years. It could be that Farnsworth will find consistency as a closer, but considering his past history in the bullpen, I doubt it.
