I know its neither the nature nor the point of these message bds, but I think we need to chill and see what Jim does. I am not resigned to anything until I see the finished product.

And just to throw my two cents in, I think that avatars or sigs which refer to Cubs management or players in deragatory or inflammatory terms should be barred. If I can't have a user name that says "Dusty is the Best" b/c it would cause unnecessary arguments, then no one should be able to have avatars and sigs that are demeaning and insulting to Hendry, who I (for one) still support and admire.

It just seems that the majority of the folks on this board get pissy every offseason if we dont sign the biggest name or contract. We wouldve made out really spectacular if we'd snagged Beltran for that sick contract - his numbers would've really helped us go nowhere this season as well.

I'm not looking to argue, which is why I read more on this messageboard than post. I'm not looking to toot my own horn and make myself feel better because I "felt like" I won a worthless argument that means nothing.... just get some info on the latest Cubs movements.

And I'll continue to sift through the name calling. hendry/cub bashing and 33 page posts going nowhere to acquire legitmate info about our latest pickups/trades. And this is the only place I know where I can hear opinions/info from my favorite info guy - Bruce Miles.

Getting back to the Pierre discussion-I think one question that the rumored deal raises is:

Is paying Reynel Pinto plus a couple lesser players worth not signing Furcal to an overpriced deal?

My thinking is this: If we trade for Pierre, Furcal becomes completely unnecessary. Hendry wouldn't feel the need to overpay just to secure his leadoff hitter. If we pass on Furcal, it lessens the blow from overpaying the guys we've signed so far, and puts us in a position to take on an impact RF via trade. We'd be in a position where we haven't committed long term to a position player, and still have enough spare cash to get a Giles, or maybe absorb some salary in a Manny/Abreu/Dun type deal. Pierre may be overrated, but in this scenario wouldn't he make some sense?

I've knocked Pierre many times. I think he's overrated, but if it prevents Neifi from batting 1st, and keeps some cash available for that impact OF bat, then I really would be willing to give up Pinto for him. What do you all think?

So, does anyone else have any other guesses as to the package? I still think it's Pinto, Greenberg and Novoa.

Since the verbage was 2 minor leaguers I'd guess that eliminates Novoa as he spent a significant amount of time on the 25 man roster. I could see it being Wellemeyer or Mitre or perhaps both.

I wonder if this move isn't done to perhaps clear a space for Greenberg. Hendry seems to like him and he had a decent enough winter league campaign to remove fears of permanent damage from the injury.

If it is Pinto that they want, I'm going to say that the other two guys are going to wind up being people that we haven't heard of or are fringe contributors at best.

I think we should also ban inflammatory and potentially offensive words like: stinks, darn, rats, crap, and LaRussa. Anything that might allow even the slightest bit of personal expression -- let's be rid of it. Especially on a place like an Internet message board.

Juan Pierre: Three prospects and $5.5 million

Rafael Furcal: $45 million and a second round draft choice

An absolute guarantee that your manager won't bat an outmaker second: PRICELESS!!!

That's a good point; I sort of toyed with it earlier. I was thinking that we have not heard much about Furcal for about a week. May be Jim figures, "I can get Pierre without spending all that money, which is better used on bolstering the pen and acquiring a corner OF who can hit between Lee and ARam? Plus, I have an in-house option for SS who is cheap..."

No, not Neifi. Ronny.

I narrowed my focus to sigs and avatars, not posts. But thanks for putting words in my mouth.

Juan Pierre - OF - FLA - Nov. 23 - 9:10 pm et

WSCR 670 in Chicago is reporting that the Cubs are close to acquiring Juan Pierre from the Marlins for three prospects.

One would be left-hander Renyel Pinto. According to the report, center fielder Felix Pie wouldn't be involved. Another expendable reliever probably would be. Roberto Novoa or Jermaine Van Buren could help the Marlins. Nov. 23 - 9:10 pm et

Part of me wants it happen so that Hendry can move on and get that impact corner OF bat we're all pining for.

A better example would be JD Drew who got a lot of attention here even though it seems Hendry never seriously considered signing him. Had the Cubs signed Beltran that would have pushed Patterson out of the starting lineup or precluding signing Burnitz. It's hard to know what Beltran might have done in a Cubs uniform but I'd expect him to have a better season this year and despite a bad season he still outperformed Burnitz and Patterson.

I think there's a pretty distinct and obvious line between the two things being compared here.

Actually, at this point any additional class A or B free agent will merely cost us a 4th round draft choice. We've already blown our second and third rounders on relievers.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would have predicted that at the beginning of the offseason.

I'm listening to 670..

Football, football, football..

The Score has mentioned that a deal with Pierre is in the works during every Scoreboard Update. Listen around 20 or 40 after the hour.

Ok...I don't have time to read through nine pages. Someone give me the cliff notes version of this thread.

Pierre for Pinto and two minor leaguers in the works.

They said barely anything about Pierre..

Joe Bartosh said " The Cubs continue to work on getting Juan Pierre from the Marlins." He just shortened everything after talking about the Thome deal. That doesn't diminish the deal (if true).

Jessie Rogers is going to talk Hot Stove next perhaps he will give more information, if available.

Don't leave out all of the hand wringing.

I hate to give up Pinto, but as long as the other minor leaguers aren't Harvey or Dopirak, I can probably live with it.

I'd rather Castillo than Pierre, but I also wanted Dotel over Howry, so apparently the Cubs have little concern of my feelings this offseason.
