Rowand to Philly for Thome and (Olney speculates) a lot of cash (as much as $25 mill).

In addition, he emphasized that the Marlins fire sale is not over.

Even as a Cub fan I tip my hat to this organization. Instead of sitting on their WS loot, it goes right back into the team. Thome did always want to play in Chicago, you know.

Speculation was Thome DH, and they could still keep Konerko for 1B.

If Philly ends up paying a lot for a guy who is no longer playing for them, they might be more likely to trade an expensive player to cut costs and allow for actual improvements to the team. They will not stand pat with what they've been trying for years.

Two thoughts, if this goes through.

Sox will be needing a centerfielder.........Cubs may end up bidding against the Soxs for Pierres services. Lofton back in Cubbie blue?

Phillies have a surplus of outfielders, who and where are they going to move one of them?

The White Sox may pursue Pierre, but they don't need a CF.

They have Brian Anderson and Chris Young right behind him.

Sox will get Pierre. I think they will be willing to give up more than the Cubs, fortunately. Of course, they could move Scotty Poddy to CF and get a LF.

Thome has a NTC - is it a lock he will waive it? I bet he will considering he's a Chicago guy and the Sox won the WS last year...

Nothing is a lock until the deal is official, but Thome was quoted as saying Chicago and Cleveland were places he'd be willing to play.

They didn't need an aging, oft-injured DH either, they had Frank Thomas.

Not according to Olney (source was his ESPN radio appearance, BTW). This money comes from divesting themselves of Thomas and Everett, leaving $ for Konerko if he chooses to come back. Thome appears to be headed to DH-land. Nice job by Kenny Williams.

This is a nice move only if:

1: Thome can remain relatively healthy.

2: Brian Anderson (the kid they brought up late in the season) plays as well as Kenny Williams hopes.

3: Paul Konerko re-signs.

You can't trust Thome to be healthy (especially with the back) at this stage of his career, plus he is 35 yrs old. If they don't re-sign Konerko (it's awfully tempting of Konerko to stay knowing that he has a bonafid hitter watching his back), it would be the end of the season when Thome injuries himself. Cause who would be the "backup" at 1st? Dye, Bourchard, Gload? The White Sox would almost have to re-sign Konerko.

Per Bruce Levine:

Phils get Rowand and two left-handed minor league pitchers. Can't recall their names.

EDIT: Hagworth and Gonzales are the two picthers.

Decent deal for the Phillies, IMO. Rowand's bound to rebound hitting in Philly, with a decent lineup around him. And they can afford it as they will likely get Thome-like production out of Ryan Howard for next to nothing. They now have a good core of Howard, Utley, Burrell and Rowand.

Don't. Reinsdorf made money hand over fist and will invest very little of it back into the team. He's just about a big of a scumbag as you'll find in MLB ownership, and considering his peers, that's really saying something.

I think we can change the title of this thread to "confirmed". Levine says its done.

And Levine says both the Sox and Cubs will be in the hunt for Pierre.

I bet Williams next move is to go hard after Pierre.

Does anyone think that KW would trade Anderson, Young, or McCarthy for Pierre?

I bet the look into it, but I'd have to imagine that it is a priority to resign Konerko. Taking on the salray that Konerko will demand will make it questionable that they can land Pierre and resign him for the future. They also already have a CF in Podsednik so may look to make a move for a LF instead of CF.
