Can still see Pierre being dealt. $6 million or so is a little much for a small market team. The Florida franchises are pathetic. Just move the Marlins & D Ray to Southern Cal or New York.

Pierre only made 3.5 million last year, and had a terrible year. I have a hard time seeing him making more than 4 million in arbitration.

Well, that wouldn't be too bad, but have seen speculation on here from 5-8 million. If they can save a few bucks w/ Patterson in CF and a prospect, I can see it. Btw will Patterson take a pay cut in arbitration?? If anyone ever deserved one, it's him after last year.

I'll put my house against $10,000 of yours. I'll take the over.

It's an interesting case. He deserves one(paycut), but I doubt it goes to arbitration because of Hendry's history. His history also has him being the "nice guy" to players so he may not want to slight Patterson with an offer below his previous salary. Ultimately though, Patterson may be gone before that decision needs to be made.

Does anyone think the Marlins might want someone like Cedeno included in the deal? Seems to fit what they're going for.

Not to change the direction of the thread, but would you do Walker, Cedeno, Patterson, and prospect for Castillo and Pierre?

If so, would you be on the phone with Nomar to welcome him back?

hopefully with that deal its a low-level prospect. if walker and castillo have similar value, which someone has said here, your'e really trading patterson and cedeno for pierre. which is still overpaying, imo.

castillo's better than walker..

I just try to get castillo and sign Furcal instead of trading for Pierre.

The Marlins got two of the Mutts' better prospects...although, that really isn't saying much.

Petit has sick numbers and awesome control. That said, none of his four pitches grade out really well. According to reports, his 88-90 mph fastball has good movement and he's deceptive using it...but that's about the extent of it.

Jacobs is a curious prospect to me. He could potentially end up behind the dish since he originally came up at catcher. He's not very good defensively and is getting up there in age in prospect terms at 25. He's also a left handed pull hitter with some pop.

Still, the Cubs might want to get their act together if they want Castillo and Pierre. The Marlins look like they've got itchy trigger fingers lately.

I would love the defence of Castillo at 2B with Cedeno at Short. We then have some cash left over to sort out the mess in the OF. We could throw the Kitchen sink at Philly for Abreu, platoon CPatt and Hairston in CF and Murton in LF. I am coming round to Goony's idea that a marginal upgrade at SS would be far less beneficial than a total upgrade in the OF and plug the holes on the IF.

I concur with those who say the Cubs have GOT to jump into the thick of this. Now is the time for players like Pierre and Castillo to be had.

If Hendry doesn't inquire, he's the biggest idiot there ever was.

Anybody here remember the last time the Marlins had a firesale, that the Cubs could had participated in?

Instead of targeted GUYS like Brown, Sheffield, or Alou....the Cubs landed a chump name Kurt Miller. Does anybody actually see the Cubs jumping into the firesale salsa? I don't.

Thievery by the Mets.

Actually, having said that, and now having actually seen the details on Delgado's contract, I'm not so sure.

I knew it was a $52m/4yr deal that Delgado signed with the Marlins last year. But I didn't realise it broke down like...

05: $4m, 06: $13.5m, 07: $14.5m, 08: $16m, 09: $12m mutual option vs $4m buyout provided Delgado doesn't involve himself in 08 MVP voting (in which case he gets a guaranteed $16m in 09).

The money that they've sent to the Mets actually only covers the difference in state taxes, so the Mets are still on the hook for $48m/3yrs to a guy that'll be 36 by the time the deal's up. Ouch.

The Marlins effectively got one superb year from Delgado (.301/.399.582 in 616 PA) at the cost of $11m and then traded him before his contract got ugly and he got old. Clever.

The only thing that's not so clever is the haul they commanded from the Mets. Petit really doesn't have that much by way of stuff, and Jacobs' numbers look scarily like Jason Dubois'!

Side topic:

So far the Marlins have traded their two most avail. players that they likely intended to trade, Beckett and Delgado. In the process, they cleared another huge contract w/Lowell. In the process of trading those valuable players, they failed to pick-up a ML ready CF prospect.

Florida does not have a CF prospect ready for the majors, their best CF prospect Eric Reed, struggled at AAA despite the high avg. and will not be ready for the majors until the end of '06 most likely.

With Boston, they have a CF prospect by the name of Adam Stern, I'm just wondering, if Florida didn't pursue it or he wasn't avail. from Boston. If Florida didn't pursue it, the question has to be why, if Pierre is next on the chopping block. Either they'd be luke-warm on trading Pierre or the teams interested in Pierre have a CF'er they'd want instead.

Could the loss of Damon be a reason why Boston wouldn't give him up?

Unless the Red Sox have changed their mind, they haven't been very impressed with Adam Stern so far. It could be that he's just young, but I saw him play some in 2005 and he's very unrefined!! He has alot of speed, but he was an AWFUL baserunner last season making more than a handful of bonehead moves on the basepaths. If they don't re-sign Damon, they'll fill CF with someone other than Stern.

That contract kind of makes you think twice about signing Giles toa 4 year deal then considering he will be 36 come 2007.
