According to this, the Marlins are in full fire sale mode.

Marlins President David Samson would not comment Saturday. But sources said Florida's front office has been telling teams that, except for pitcher Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera, everyone is available because of orders to cut payroll from the club-record $65 million spent on last season's team.

Everyone knows the Cubs interest in Pierre. Why not Castillo as well? What would it take to get both players?

If the Cubs sign Furcal, could they afford to offer both Walker and Cedeno in a deal for Pierre and Castillo?

Would it be too redundant to have essentially 3 leadoff men in Pierre, Furcal, and Castillo? That would leave a lot to be desire power wise, also factor in that Murton probably won't hit many more than 20, and we're really handcuffed, power wise...although the speed and OBP would be insane at the top. I'd consider hitting them 1-2-3 with Lee and ARam 4th and 5th...run-scoring-maching...

I wouldn't have a problem with Furcal-Pierre-Castillo all on the team. It would be a departure from what we have, but if we add the right player in RF, we could have enough power.

I'd probably use this as my line-up:

SS Furcal

2b Castillo

1b Lee

3b Ramirez

RF ?

LF Murton

CF Pierre

C Barrett

I think power is overrated. That lineup would score runs. Runs win baseball games.

If we go with that lineup, the RF is really going to need to be somebody who's going to hit 40 home runs, and that's going to mean this lineup is going to be really, really expensive.

I think there are a number of pure power guys that you could add for RF as well. With the OBP that line-up would have, you might could even afford to bring back Burnitz for RF. You could look at Mench, but after getting Pierre and Castillo, I'm not sure what trading chips would be left.

Preston Wilson might not be a horrible option for RF with that line-up as well. With that line-up, Encarnacion would be ok as well.

I might bat Pierre 8th instead of Barrett, but that might just be because I hated that Dusty insisted on batting Barrett 8th all season, where his production was more or less wasted. That said, his production wouldn't really be wasted in that lineup, so I don't mind too much.

Depending on how cheaply he could be had, player-wise, Bradley might not be a bad option in RF in that lineup. Keeps the OBP trend going, and he's got decent power.

Just go after Pierre and Furcal (no castillo) and trade for Adam Dunn =P~

Furcal, SS

Pierre, CF

Lee, 1b

Dunn, RF

Ramirez, 3b

Barrett, C

Murton, LF

Cedeno, 2b

Or if walker returns as 2b (I doubt it) put him 6th, bump Barrett and Murton down a spot each.

I could really live with this lineup...

I would like Guillermo Mota to add to my bullpen. He was lights out as setup man in LA for Gagne. His stuff is very similar to Dotel's. If I offered Florida Jermaine Van Buren and Geovanny Soto, do you think they'd bite??

I think they'd want much more than that.

Mota has great stuff, but he's 32 and had trouble getting outs even in that big ballpark last year. I wouldn't mind him at all, but I'd probably pay a little more (either in cash or prospects) to get Dotel.

What about a mega deal with the Marlins?

Would you consider this?

Cubs get: Castillo, Pierre, Beckett, and Lowell.

Marlins get: Pie, Cedeno, Nolasco, Williams, and Marshall or Pinto.

The Cubs would have to spin Lowell to another team, but we'd have a number one and two hitter and a rotation of

Zambrano

Prior

Wood

Beckett

Maddux

Bah. Forget Pierre & Castillo. The best player being mentioned in all this is Josh Beckett. I'd offer Pie & Hill for Beckett.

If I have to take on additional salary in return, I'll accept Castillo and add some token for him.

If you tossed in Walker and got Castillo, we'd have the lead-off hitter with or without Pierre or Furcal.

How about Pie, Hill and Walker for Beckett and Castillo?

Would the Marlins do that knowing they still need to move Lowell to?

Gammons implies that to get Beckett, you have to take Lowell as moving Lowell's contract is the key.

I guess I just don't understand the obsession with leadoff hitters. Especially getting multiple leadoff hitters.

I think our team would be better with Castillo over Walker. I like Walker, but if I could upgrade to Castillo I would.

Well, neither is much of a base stealer. Castillo gets on a bit more, but Walker provides a lot more power. I guess the argument could be made that Castillo's defensive difference is bigger than Walker's offensive advantage and I could buy that. But I wouldn't give up a lot to make that upgrade.

Beckett, on the other hand, is a difference maker waiting to not have blisters.
