I am not sure if this has been discussed yet, but B/B on the SCORE today mentioned that amphetamines are an ingredient in 1 of 2 of the main drugs used to treat ADD. Would this new ban effect Eyre or could he get a waiver because he uses the pills for medical purposes? If the league says yes it could open the doors to an array of other people trying to get behind the new rule.

You can get an exemption from your doctor. I believe the league has the right to have their own doctor examine you too. Otherwise he could use the other drug.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a waiver, and yes, I can see lots of other players trying to get waivers too. ADD is notoriously over-diagnosed in children, now you'll see adults trying to get in on the action. ADD medications are already popular study aids for college students.

If they don't waive it, they'll be sued. Count on it.

It's like punishing a cancer patient for taking steroids.

Hey, let's punish the unfortunate! whoohoo!

I popped a few of my friends ritalin before big papers/exams and I was a machine. No rereading the same paragraphs over and over, and I was in a total zone when studying.

The amphetamine prescribed for ADD is Adderall. Eyre takes Ritalin.

Ritalin is mythelphenidate, it is in the same family as Adderall. They are both CNS stimulants.

I found this interesting

Scott Eyre was so intent on becoming a Cub he accepted their three-year, $11 million offer without trying to find out if he could get more elsewhere.

[sarcasm]you don't say. I can't imagine why he would not contact other teams[/sarcasm]

Yeah, I was a little peeved when I saw that too. Free Agency is Hendry's Achilles' heel. I wish he'd just stick to working his magic via trade. He's above average at that.

Scott Eyre's full no-trade clause only extends through next season. He can block deals to 10 teams in 2007 and '08.

More details about his contract continue to surface. Eyre gets a $1 million signing bonus, $2.7 million next season and $3.5 million in 2007. He has a $3.8 million player option for 2008 and possible bonuses that could total $2.4 million over the three years.

This may already be posted, I lost my place in this thread, and it is now WAY to long to read all the way through. However this was just posted on Rotoworld.

Sorry if it is already on here. :D

That would mitigate things a bit if I thought any team would take on his ridiculous salary. But it's still nice to see that the NTC isn't as extreme as we thought.

Will this signing prevent the team from making any future moves and is this player a worse option then what we currently have on the team?

I answer both questions no. Therefore, no matter the outcome of this signing, I will not call for the GM's head for signing relief help and I will not call other posters names.

You are wrong on the first. You cannot be anything but wrong on the first. Any time you spend any money on anything you have taken money away from the general pool. unless hendry's plan was to end the offseason with several million in his budget unspent, this has affected the team.

Obviously it takes away from the budget but it isn't such a percentage of the budget that will result in the Cubs from not signing someone else. My point is to say that if you don't like the acquisition because of the money spent, the affect shouldn't be that great to refrian from acquiring someone that you want. How would you feel as a Marlins fan because you have to trade other elements of your team becasue of the percentage of budget you are spending on Delgado & Lowell.

As for the structure of the contract, it is certainly manageable and it is something I am noticing that Hendry has been doing more often. He is using signing bonuses as a way of mazimizing the value of the contract to hte player but also maximizes the hit to the payroll. If you take away the signing bonus from Eyre the contract that hits the budget is certainly more manageable. He basically takes Hawkins' salary.

huh? say we sign furcal and blah and blah until we have $5 million left. We still need an OF. If it wasn't for a certain few players, we could afford giles. Yes, this is only one scenario. but there are literally millions of similar ones I could create where a few million dollars set on fire could keep the cubs from getting someone useful.

A major league scouting director I know really likes Eyre--says he is a workhorse and very solid.

Did the Cubs overpay? Yes, he said, but most free agent pitchers who are any good are overpaid.

Speaking of amphetmaines, I also heard on the SCORE with Murf that they cannot make you a better baseball player, they only make your bad days less bad. Is that true?

I would definitely buy into any medical advice that Murf on the score was giving out. He's not a medical doctor but he plays one on the radio

Ah, that's quite a far-reaching family you have there. it also contains LSD, cocaine, Tylenol and coffee.
