Maybe someone can explain why the Dodgers would want to hand Furcal a multiyear contract. The only way it makes any sense is if the Dodgers believe that Cesar Izturis is never going to be the same after surgery and won't be able to work his way back to the team by August of next year. Last year DePodesta was claiming that they were going to move Joel Guzman to a corner infield spot because they would not have a need at shortstop with Izturis signed to a long-term contract.

Looks like we might have to wait a little longer for the Furcal sitaution to be complete.

Sportsline

The Los Angeles Dodgers have complicated the picture for Rafael Furcal, and now the free-agent shortstop is not expected to make a decision as to his 2006 team until this weekend or later.

The Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves all are aggressively pursuing Furcal, who reportedly has a five-year offer on the table from the Cubs.

A week ago, it appeared to be down to the Cubs and Braves, but the hiring of new general manager Ned Colletti has changed the winter plans in Los Angeles. With the Dodgers apparently having lost out on outfielder Brian Giles -- he was expected to sign with San Diego by the end of the day Thursday -- Furcal, one of the bigger impact players remaining on the free agent market, now is in the Dodgers' sights.

Uh-oh, Rotoworld updates:

Rafael Furcal - SS - Braves

ESPN's Jayson Stark said he's not as confident that Rafael Furcal will join the Cubs as he was two days ago.

Talks are continuing, and it's possible no deal will be reached before the end of the weekend, as was previously expected. The Arlington Heights Daily Herald is reporting that the Cubs have offered Furcal $50 million over five years. The Dodgers also appear likely to beat the Braves' four-year offer. Agent Paul Kinzer met with the Braves yesterday and will continue to do so. "I'm based out of Atlanta. I'd love to keep him here," Kinzer said. "Ultimately it's going to be his decision. There has not been a decision made." Dec. 1 - 5:12 pm et

right now I am shaking the angry fist at the Dodgers....

Why would he want to go to the Dodgers? That team is a mess right now.

Well, other than the fact that they already have an All-star caliber shortstop, no manager and a new general manager, I can't figure out what the Dodgers are doing here. Why the hell would Furcal put himself in that position. That's even worse than going somewhere to a team that thinks their current SS is an all-star (Neifi), an absent minded manager, and a very good GM. If anything at least we're better than the Dodgers. I wouldn't blame him if he state in Atlanta with Cox and Schuerholtz, but we are offering more money and years - and those tend to do the talking nowadays.

They don't even have a manager...........then again many people would say neither do the Cubs.

It's been widely speculated that the Cubs have offered 5/$50 for Furcal. I see this as a ploy by Kinzer to up the price. Perhaps he's trying to force the Braves into a 5th year (inwhich case, Furcal may pull a Giles or Konerko and stay put). I see the price and terms increasing. The agent is smiling widely!

That's what I'm thinking as well. I don't see the Braves going to a 5th year though.

Yeah, I don't get that either. I think it is reasonable to conclude that he is using the Dodgers to drive the price up.

Stand firm Jim; call his bluff. If he wants LA and their manager-less team, let him have it. Especially if he wants a guaranteed 5th year and more than $55 mill. Then go out and acquire Pierre and Abreu (please!!!!!!!!!!!!).

It's a negotiating ploy. None of those teams are bigger bets to sign him than the Cubs and he's not gonna get $50M from anyone.

Of course, this is what Hendry gets for looking so desperate.

things have certainly changed

I don't see the Braves guaranteeing 5 years either. Kinzer has two teams in the Cubs and Dodgers with money to spend so he's taking advantage of his leverage. I really think he's using the Dodgers to get more out of the Cubs.

I wouldn't be suprised if a 6th year option gets thrown in (or dare I say 7 years? )

I hope we get furcal in the end.

1) It's Southern California. Since it's the second biggest metropolis in the U.S., obviously lots of people like living there.

2) He's likes the Dodgers work w/ Dominican Republic players.

Most free agents seem to be choosing either NY or SoCal nowadays. Just off the top my head: Giles, Vlad, Colon, Cabrera, Kent, Drew, Beltran, Pedro, Wagner, Sheffield..
